I know it's not a unit or a weapon, but I want to throw out "Dead Silence" from COD4. If you weren't using it, you would be completely obliterated by anyone in the game with enough skill to track footsteps (note: not much skill required).

I would argue that any unit, weapon, or ability that MUST be used in order to compete when other options are available makes it imbalanced.

Catapults had a longer range though, so they could deal with them.

If you would spent all the resources needed for Helepolis on Chariot Archers, the latter one would definitely win. Furthermore you practically never really get to Helepolis, not even in 4vs4s. Even if that would happen, you could, as you said, counter with Catapults.
And you still can micro your units to avoid getting hit. It's even easier when the opponent has the upgrade.

That's all I can think of for now.

Also, hammerdin is nothing compared to pre-1.03 Corpse Explosion. That spell just decimated everything. Clearing 4 screen fulls of monsters in an 8 player game with one cast? No problem.

FF7, "Spell: Beta" (iirc)
You had to run past this guy (well, with some luck you actaully could win but you weren't meant to), BUT if you fight it he sometimes would drop one of your Chars out of combat, later on he would probably use "Beta" (AE-Spell that does ~3000 DMG iirc?) that is WAY, WAY overpowered at this stage of the game (look at the HP of your Party in the Picture) which you could learn with the Spellsteal-Materia. After your dead your char that was removed from combat would be alive with 1 HP.. Revive, Heal up, Save.
It's to expensive on the Mana side (you can use it) but it makes every Group Fight a cakewalk until pretty late in the game.
