Now that I think of it, shoulders for some classes might have a rare as BiS as well. Or maybe so close to be virtually equal with Vile Ward.

As I see it, the CotA checkpoint does very little to actually help players who are questing normally and need to end a play through then and there. You can easily take the drowned temple waypoint, get the quest from Alaric and find CotA. Removing the checkpoint does little to set back players who are questing but would nerf the power of CotA runs compared to doing anything else.

Probably to cover their asses when the next one gets found so they don't have to keep hotfixing it.

Removing the checkpoint does little to set back players who are questing but would nerf the power of CotA runs compared to doing anything else. they specifically said they dont care if people do it. moreover, they said it will be obsolete when ros comes out. The CotA runs or Core runs that many people are doing right now is something that we believe to be mostly a temporary thing during this transition period between the expansion pre-patch and the expansion itself. We expect that bounties and rifts will be where people will go to farm gear and XP once Reaper of Souls is out, and if it turns out that this is not the case, well then we will likely step in to change that. http://eu.battle.net/d3/en/forum/topic/10033323796#10

CotA only gives exp. Adventure modes probably similar exp with vastly superior items and materials. You do the maths.

Pretty much anything that could roll trifecta has the possibility of a rare being BiS. I think there were good set/legendary amulets and rings but the gloves were pretty bad. Now that I think of it, shoulders for some classes might have a rare as BiS as well. Or maybe so close to be virtually equal with Vile Ward. Gloves were terrible except for Immortal King's (due to set bonus and potential 200+ str) and sometimes Tasker and Theo. Crafted shoulders were potentially BiS for all classes except Barbarians, because int and dex could roll higher than regular items. Anyway the point is, I think it's important to preserve a bit of excitement, or at least hope, when a rare item drops. We'll see how much it'll take to start ignoring them, but I still think it's bad design.

Just getting back into the game at Torment 1 for reference and halfway through Q1 (yes I'm doing story mode again for the heck of it) and the rare drops more often than not are still vendor-trash. Softcore - Not really, although the mats are going to be useless anyways the instant ROS comes out because you can't make useful gear with it. Hardcore - Keep the mats safe in stash somewhere. There's a fair chance that you'll lose a character somehow, and that can ease the pain a bit.

"People wanted Torment to be more rewarding, so we removed rewards from non-Torment difficulties." "We want Adventure Mode to be the best gameplay possible, so we're nerfing anything that's better." I don't really care about either change; set drops is rather random, but seems rather meaningless, and CotA was pretty dumb in the first place, with the random checkpoints. It's just the double-speak I found amusing.

Cota is still the best place for exp runs despite the nerf. Oh btw I fell in love with the frozen rune in earthquake. Guarantees the elite packs eat the full dmg because they are frozen in the aoe the entire time. Its the best skill I found for clearing elites for barbs. Just insane

Slower exp than cota I agree, but more fun. I run at torment 3 with a 2barb 2monk party, using forced march rune for sprint on 1barb to make the entire party faster, mainly because warcry doesn't stack unlike mantras.
