There is an ACT 3 in Diablo 2? Even on my solo runs I mostly just ran through there, not worth the effort.
Maggot Lair really sucked for some builds. My favorite build of all time is a skellymancer, Necro with emphasis on normal skeletons and CE as back up. Maggot Lair was hell on Hell.

EDIT: By the way, the follower (Merc) system was revealed today. So far only translated Korean leaks (which, for a starcraft site, should not be a problem). Full reveal of the system will follow later today according to Bashiok.

So far it looks cool: 3 different mercenaries: Tank, Mage and Crossbow-wielder. Some customizable skills, which is very cool. And their equipment seems to be limited to weapons and jewelry (2 rings and an amulet). So far this seems exactly what I wanted.

Hahahaha Maggot Lair was retarded for Hammerdins. I guess since blizzard couldn't balance them, then they had to do something to make you suffer. Though with enigma, it wasn't a problem anymore.

It appears followers will only be able to be used when alone. If you are out in a game with a follower and another player joins, then your follower will return to town. As soon as that other player leaves then the follower will come back. Followers will always stay within 1 level of you...even if you decide not to use one until the very end of the game.

I have many fond memories of 8-player traffic jams in the Maggot Lair. Many a TP scroll were wasted trying to sort out the clusterfuck.

The Jay Wilson interview with NowGamers clarifies this. You can have followers with MP chars, you just don’t get to use them in MP games. If you’re playing with a follower and someone else joins your game, your follower goes back to town for the duration.

I really really think they should reconsider this "followers only for SP" idea. When beta hits, people need to cry and whine until they get implemented into MP. I've really had enough of all this "always connected to other people" shit they promote. It started with wow then sc2 and now it seems they want to absolutely make sure you're pidgeon-holed into played D3 with other people.
It's not like I don't have friends to play with, but sometimes they aren't online and/or I want to solo a bit. So I get penalized for wanting to play at my own pace without other people?

I never played D2 that much but I love it's story and lore. It's not "look I got pyroblast everything is dust", it was more brutal and mericless where things felt realistical and logical. Atmosphere and ambience is huge part of this and I really hope that D3 will provide this to us.

Atm it probably looks like it's pretty shiny and artistical choises prefer "yay cool" over "(hmm..) dark atmosphere(?)". But I dont wan't to speculate too much since I haven't played the game and as I will buy it no matter what was the artistic choice, I don' want to be pessimistic already before game is even out.

down from 8 with 8 mercs

I hope they reconsider the mercs to MP or reconsider the MP player limit to 6 or 8

on a better note that video looked absolutely amazing

If they keep the players8 (or something akin to it) command in game, and have the same item/boss pools for single or MP, i'll probably stick to SP only, or perhaps play with a few select individuals. I prefer to play at my own pace, collect/clear everything, and not have to deal with the average kiddy/griefer playerbase.

I've always enjoyed D2 more with 1 to 3 players max.

Good Reasons for 4 players and no mercs:

1) All players can more easily be present in the action. It was very rare to get all 8 players involved in the same place in D2, people say baal runs, but I don't buy that at all.

2) Latency because less of an issue, the netcode only has to support the actions of 4 people rather than 8 people spamming, this also has hardware ramifications

3) Gameplay balance: With 8 players, if you built a team that was perfectly synergistic, you could run though hell naked. Lower resists auras, raise resists (defensive), Shouts for double the health, etc... Anyone who's played a planned 8 man team has encountered this. It was face-roll easy. The only time it was hard was when you had 5-6 tag alongs (or even 7 watching one dude do all the work). This should make it easier to force players to work together, and use skills/abilities that help teammates rather than looking out only for number 1.

Reasons it sucks:

Can't play with more friends at once

10 G's in the packet and I'm ready to roll, on fire like a rocket and I'm ready to blow
