actually i think this needs to be said. to everybody in this thread, listen:
i don't have as much credibility to say this as i used to but some of you guys need to think twice before you make generalizations, statements, or give advice in this thread. prior to season 1, Elo was invisible so nobody really knew how good they were outside of the few of us who were clearly in high Elo. now that Elo is visible and entirely within your control, there is no other excuse you can give other than saying ridiculous stuff like "i play better than i am". that means you need to have credibility to back up what you are saying. i don't play this game as much but whenever i drop in this thread and see ridiculous posts from lowbies giving ridiculous advice it still pisses me off.
think of it this way: imagine how frustrated does nony feel whenever he looks at retarded strategy threads in the sc2 forum? or when he gives advice some copper random says he's wrong and provides screenshots of their wins 'proving him wrong'? during iccup days, D/D- players didn't give advice or disagree with A- player and if they did they were told to shut up.
i don't mean to discourage discussion such as "how to counter ____" or "why is _____ so good". like i was pretty interested in reading the analysis of mejais vs NLR earlier in the thread. but we need to tone down on the "you're wrong, i am right because i said so", "look at my screenshot, i am good", "this is how to play ____ because i went 10-2 as ____ one game", etc. bad advice from bad players lead to bad play from those that listen. please don't do it.

apurplecow: i know you defended yourself earlier by saying that you play against lowbies and have a different experience and situation than others... but if anything that should show you NOT to hand out advice in this thread and disagree when someone (especially someone with credibility) says you're incorrect. vamp scepter is not a good first item in 99% of situations and you'd understand that if you knew how lane-pushing/zoning worked.
1) I agreed that vamp scepter isn't a good opening item. I didn't stubbornly argue for pages about this.
2) 99% of the people reading this thread are not top ELO players. 99% of people also play against lowbies and my advice applies to them. The 1% that are top ELO players and that my advice might not apply to have great understanding of the game and can decide for themselves whether or not my advice is applicable to their situation.
3) The concept of auto attacking ALWAYS being poor for laning is a complete oversimplification. There are many situations in which you want to auto attack. For example, if you've just killed your lane opponent, it's advisable to auto attack and push your creeps into their tower so that their tower kills a large amount of your creeps before your lane opponent can come back and gain the XP/gold from your creeps. Of course, this doesn't always hold true--for example, a jungler could come and take the gold and XP, but it does hold true sometimes and this is just one example. In my experience auto attacking is beneficial for lane control pretty often.
i don't have as much credibility to say this as i used to but some of you guys need to think twice before you make generalizations, statements, or give advice in this thread. prior to season 1, Elo was invisible so nobody really knew how good they were outside of the few of us who were clearly in high Elo. now that Elo is visible and entirely within your control, there is no other excuse you can give other than saying ridiculous stuff like "i play better than i am". that means you need to have credibility to back up what you are saying. i don't play this game as much but whenever i drop in this thread and see ridiculous posts from lowbies giving ridiculous advice it still pisses me off.
Is this partly because of what I posted? I did not advise vampiric scepter as a starting item. I asked for help fine tuning the build I posted (the thing I was questioning most was vampiric scepter itself, actually).

Cloth armor and 5 hp pots if you think you can get golem off the bat, sometimes I start with cloth + 2 pots and a ward instead of 5 pots. Rush Madred's Razors, get some sort of boots, work towards Bloodrazor + GA. The build diverges from here. I've seen people do things like Malady, Starks, Infinity Edge, Negatron into FoN, Sunfire, etc. When you crit so hard and do %life* on hit with both you and your clone it's a little OP lol.

I asked for help fine tuning the build I posted (the thing I was questioning most was vampiric scepter itself, actually). no it's not. and if it seemed like that then i apologize. it's a feeling i've had for a long time and i'm sure is shared by many of the other players from TL (i remember inept telling me something along the lines of "i give up on that thread"). and though you "give advice to other lowbies in the thread" (like Southlight) i suggest that you make sure that advice is either applicable at all levels or VERY VERY good at said level (like how to rape face with Yi at low Elo). you aren't doing anybody a favor by suggesting Xin is a good mid, trust me.
I never suggested Xin was a good mid. I stated that I was playing Xin and that I personally was going middle. I also stated that against lowbies I have been very successful with Xin going mid.
Never did I say that Xin was good at going mid.

i already said that message wasn't necessarily directed at you.
edit: here is a better example of being totally wrong than the xin shit.

I pretty much won't take a tank(rammus/amummu) in solo que unless Im jungling which is kind of sad but that's how I feel, I will play taric on the off chance he's not banned and lane with him, cause it's a free win in that lane
The thing fiddle has is that nice fear and the early dragon, but amummu should just ask u to help at dragon at that point.
Fiddle has lane staying power with drain, and a nice farming skill in E, and can solo or duo lane fine. I prefer him to have a solo lane if he's laning though. Anything that jungles will be richer than a laner. Amumu can also solo dragon early. I'm not saying he didn't get screwed somewhat, I'm just saying fiddle levels faster, and can gank way easier. more silliness.

what? positive reinforcement in dotaish game threads? what is this
I like playing with my newbie friends who've never played DoTA. I never rage when someone is new as long as they're at least a little receptive or show capacity for learning, or failing those at least they listen to instructions. I ran a 5 man team a couple days ago (before I got SC2 and the campaign sucked my life away) with 3 newbie friends, 2 of which had never played DoTA games before, and we rocked. It was awesome.

I sometimes play with a guy I play Eve with. I have never played DoTA, and have no real experience with these kind of games. He puts up with me, and sometimes can just dominate games if my shit elo gets us a good (read easy) match.
If you're finding yourself raging out in high elo games or at people's bad advice in this thread, just grab a beer and play with your noob buddies. You'll probably feel better.

Anyone wanna duo queue? I'm by no means pro, but not terribad either. I play a decent kayle but am getting bummed out solo queueing (two games in a row, I had ap yi on my team. Game before that, Eve/Teemo).
I'm "The Jacobian" btw.

Good times.
And yeah, I've been loving Garen this week! I'm still kind of at the "whoa, that guy's cool, I'll play him for a while" stage, but he's a fun flavor of the week.

By the by, could someone recommend me a few good streams? Ones featuring Nasus, Amumu or Shaco would be great.
