If you have a metagross in, then I'm switching in a fire type or something with earthquake... I'm not going to say leave in a rock type to get meteor mashed, or a steel type to get EQ'ed. On the other hand, if someone switches in a genar I can throw up a cress, or a suicune and your gengar is useless. Competative play is about switching pokes, to take the least amount of damage, and t hen attacking with a super effective move trying to keep your opponents off guard. It makes priority moves, counter moves, and stuff like pursuit useful. Hell, in the story mode, it would be a waste of time to make a trick room team when I can just sweep everyone. But in competative mode, trick room can KILL some teams. | ||

The idea is that you should be able to deal with any given threat by having some sort of plan on how to deal with it. Yes, teams can counter teams (ie, if the team has a pokemon i know i can't really deal with then I'm fucked), but honestly a good team should have some sort of a plan on how to deal with such things anyway. | ||
