The reasoning for asking this is because I was in this game yesterday where there were 4 "non-standard" champions in the game and they kinda owned everyone. The "standard heros" is a rotation between all heros, so it chances all the time. So your question does not make sense in that regard. I did not know that. Just started this saturday. Either way, thanks for clearing that up

if you like insta-gibbing people with veigar, annie might be fun too.

The "standard heros" is a rotation between all heros, so it chances all the time. So your question does not make sense in that regard. Also, it is both funny to play different heros all the time, but it is also fun to specialize in one hero and make rune pages etc. based on your playstyle etc. Figuring builds out and such by yourself is what makes this game fun, for me at least.
It doesn't really matter in the long run. In the short run, I recommend playing with only the free champions until you hit level 20. Experiment, learn, read guides on solomid.net or the official forums, etc. When you hit level 20, pick a main you like, purchase them, and start filling a tier 3 rune page for them. By the time you hit 30, you'll have a pretty complete rune page, be pretty good at that champ, and probably want to play with other champs, but then you can spend your IP on that.
What I recommend AGAINST is buying a bunch of champs, especially ones you haven't played, and buying a bunch of runes, especially tier 2. As I said, it doesn't matter in the long run, but I think it'd make the game less fun to be stuck without a decent runebook for that long.

Thanks for all the advice guys.. So I guess I should wait with buying runes(maybe buying T1 runes is affordable till then?) till I can get tier 3 and then just buy a hero I like and a rune page fitting to that hero.
Edit: Just another question. I guess I have to buy 2 heroes since if someone picks the hero that I've bought, then I won't be able to pick that hero?

Yeah.. But you will do that eventually anyway as ONLY playing one hero can get kind of boring.

just save up your IP for runes. as soon as you hit level 20 buying a full tier 3 rune page makes a big difference. by then you should know what champions you want to play so you can buy rune pages to cater to them.
A recommended first purchase would be 3 flat hp quints though, which is about 6k+ IP.

I suggest keeping your IP until Level 20 as well, at least for T3 Runes.
For champions, try them out each rotation [In practice games!] And if you really like them, buy them. If you have fun with the champion, you should be able to use it any time you want. This way, you find a lot of heroes you like to play early on. Don't limit yourself to one character or the rotation set. Choose depending on your team.
I also highly recommend the Collector's Edition. I personally got it cheap, and you get 20 champions, and a couple runes to tide you over at the bat. You also get a skin and RP for more skins.

With regards to champions, it really depends on the type of person you are. I've got a friend that mains Blitzcrank and has like 700 games logged on him. He's totally comfortable playing Blitzcrank every single game, and he's very good. On the other hand, as much as I admire people who can "main" a hero like that (xdog, wazzabi, etc.), I struggle mightily to bring myself to do it. I'm more of a tactical player, so it frustrates me when I see someone not fulfilling "their role" properly, etc. which is why you see me argue for/against heroes a lot in this thread. So I keep switching heroes to try to fill in holes in a team build, and I'm confident in and comfortable with such a wide range of heroes that it feels much more natural to switch heroes every 3 games.

I actually completely disagree with not buying runes until 20. It only costs about 1000 IP to max your rune slots with the best possible runes, and T1 runes are extremely cost-effective. It's like 35 IP per rune, ~100 for quints, and you only have a maximum of 19 total slots before level 20 anyway.
They are definitely worth it. Most of the time, at levels 1-10 or so, the first game you win already pays for your investment.

Also, I mained Chogath and only played him for about 400 games or so before trying a carry out and realizing how much easier the game was when I played a "good" hero.
As a side effect, I swear I'm the best Chogath player in the game.

How do you build him? and is it MF CHOGARTH deviation or are you playing pussy silence Cho?

I went this route with my account only buying heroes until level 20 (had 10k ip saved by the time I hit 20), but I think it's worth reconsidering. I felt so gimped between levels 15-20 with no runes playing against level 30's. Maybe matchmaking's gotten a bit better, but it's pretty shitty playing against a full crit dmg rune shaco when you're running around with 400 hp as ashe. Point being, if I re-rolled my account I'd definitely buy some t1/t2 runes along the way. Might've won me some extra games.

well yes your early game will be shit on a carry always, in my early levels I played support characters so runes didnt really matter.

Also a Shaco with or without runes will generally manhandle an Ashe regardless of runes >_>

If I was to make another account the way I'd go is to just save up for one ez mode carry like Nidalee where you will essentially always win your lane and control neutrals. Then you can enjoy your free ride to lvl 20 and higher elos =)

i bought runes and heros im such a noob :o saving seems really smart wish i did that

I bought some of the cheap champions that I wanted to try out. Yi, Nunu, Kayle, a few others as well. No way I'll spend 3600 IP for the others though, lol.

I disagree, rupture is probably as useful, if not more. A two second team silence is nice. A two second team knockup/slow followed by a two second silence and an 800+ damage single-target nuke is nicer. On top of that, he's there to stack mejai's and leviathan with assists/feast kills so eventually he becomes this ridiculously hard to kill cc-nuker-initiator-tank. I would say that he's far from useless, but most people have no idea how to play him so he gets a bad rap.

Here's a guide I wrote that explains it better. I'm posting from a DS until I get a power cord shipped from Hawaii to Korea so forgive me if I can't link or expound upon this better.
