I basically just play with one roommate. All he does is practice with his Marth. Pretty soon he's going to be able to SH double fair ken combo and I'll probably just ragequit at that point. I wish Ganondorf were better ~_~

Easy to guard Marth and throw him around after a point but really annoying to get juggled from 0 due to inferior grab range

I essentially get up thrown into up tilt into up tilt, etc. Also I have no clue how to challenge Marth from above when he's on the stage. Not even sure if there's a way since that up air is so good. I crouch cancel for foot and down tilt. Is there other stuff I could be doing?

Is there other stuff I could be doing? first of all don't play 90% FD lol you're ganon, that's your ban in like every matchup. learn to play on your good stages utilt -> utilt is a juggle, that's the correct term. marth is godlike if he's on the ground and you're in the air, there's not much you can challenge especially if you're always on FD. don't be above marth, if you are you've messed up. cc grab is always an option if he spaced very poorly. otherwise, ganon's cc jab is pretty good from what i've seen.

The same as him, I have a huge trouble keeping my shorthopping consistent. I think I will try the sliding off style and maybe even the index finger thing. It might be hell to learn though!!!! So does anyone use Z to attack mid air or is it A for most ppl? Also, to be competitive with Marth do you always need to jump cancel grabs? you dont need to jc grabs to be competitive. Its good to know, but you can still chaingrab people without it. I use A for aerials, as do most people. Z is just a macro for L+A though, so eitehr one works fine. If you want to practice shffling, plug in a second controller and hold the control stick up while youre plugging it in. This will make the gamecube confused, and the cursor for that character will automatically move down (it thinks that up is the neutral position). What this means in game terms is that the character will always be crouching. Now set the damage ratio to .5, and turn on handicap. Make yours 1 and the second controllers 9 (the default). Select him bowser and go to fd. Now you have a bowser who wont move until he hits a few 100%, essentially a sandbag you can beat to death forever. Great game-- and addicting as hell. Just curious, i'm assuming the tournaments are played on the Gamecube version of the game? I have basically 0 knowledge of the competitive side of the game, but i'm trying to get into it just to become a slightly better player. Smash on! Tournaments can use either a gamecube or a wii. Gamecubes are preferred as you dont need a wiimote to start the game, and gamecubes are nigh unbreakable. Also from my experience people mod melee on their wiis when they bring them places, which can be disorienting when ur playing as kenpachi instead of marth, or goku instead of captain falcon. you should get into it! your friends might hate you if you get too good, but then you can mess around with them when youre playing instead of being serious. My roomies get mad when I play any high tier character because they die too fast.

The best player in my state doesnt jc grab and he can still 0 death my spacies with marth and sheik if I let him grab me. Hes plenty competitive.

In general it's a bad idea to approach marth from above, because utilt / uair / fsmash cover a lot of area above marth (and even fair/bair hit pretty high) with disjointed hitboxes, meaning he can hit you for free and you can't even trade... I think ganon's aerial game is probably stronger than his ground game (what do you have on the ground? grab, jab, dtilt, ftilt, and maybe you can combo into up/downsmash sometimes), so marth being so good at hitting up is probably a bit annoying if you're trying to approach with fair/dair etc. also some fun things about ganon: (1) l-canceled (and reasonably spaced so that your fist hits their shield) fair -> jab is safe on shield; (2) side-b is safe on shield loooool (though this might be punishable, I dunno); (3) I think dthrow -> uair/bair usually combos on most characters at mid percents? (4) try dairing/bairing out of shield against laggy attacks (for example if marth does a dumb close fsmash on your shield) finally, don't play only FD lolol [damn, I hope I didn't just spout a load of nonsense] edit: oh, I guess down-b is a funny mixup too (I like it for techchasing!)
