is looking at your opponent's controller to figure out their DI like that acceptable? i feel like it shouldn't be illegal just because of how dumb that would be to enforce but the "carry around a cardboard barrier to block your opponent's vision of your hands" meta seems pretty silly (although I have also heard people talk about listening to their opponent's inputs, so idk)

I don't think there's been much of a push back as it happens so infrequently. Fortunately most big tournaments' top 8 doesn't even have the players sitting next to each other (2 CRTs back to back with splitter cables) so it's impossible. I don't follow SF much but I've heard of people assigning nothing to certain buttons on their stick to get around their opponents listening to their inputs. E.g. on knock down you can hit your empty buttons making it sound like you're teching or doing a normal get up. Thought it was interesting.

If someone is taking their eyes off the game to look at the other players controller, there is so much that is happening on the screen to where they might get punished for not knowing where their character is or paying attention to what they are doing with their own movement.

Nah I really beg to differ. First off when you reach a mid level in melee, you already almost never watch your own character and instead focus on your opponent or the space in between you. Why? Because you already know what you're inputting and where your character is. Putting your attention on your own character is how you end up misspacing and getting punished. Second, you would pretty much only look at your opponent's controller like this in situations where you hit them with moves that have plenty of hitstun and predictable trajectories BUT you would normally have to guess to get a followup. In this case since both you and your opponent's characters are occupied being thrown/hit or doing the throwing/hitting you also don't need to be watching the screen carefully because the two variables that could theoretically get you killed are controlled.

If you haven't been watching for a while, you might want to tune in. Streams will (probably) be at: I might update this with more information, but probably not.

The best part is hes calling Armada a one trick while he has literally only ever been relevant by abusing Bayonetta in sm4sh. Dude wasn't even placing in regionals in brawl.
