Since all six of them are top 100 players or were in the last few years. TBH it must really suck to watch games like Dota or Starcraft, where none of the commentators are or (recently) were* top 100 players in the world. I guess it must be like watching D- players cast Jaedong vs Flash. *going by the list of commentators at the Boston Major and the recent IEM. I can't speak for Jealous, but I (and I think what Lucumo is getting at?) don't like it when commentators talk about everything -but- the game, and often, try to make the commentary more about themselves and showing off how "in the know" and "connected" they are. It's a big reason why I never liked HMW/Phil commentary, because I honestly don't really care about whatever it is they talk about while ignoring what's happening in the game for stocks at a time. Toph and SCar, in contrast, balance talking about outside of the game stuff and in-game stuff, and usually, the outside of game stuff is used to enhance/give context to what they narrate as happening in-game. It doesn't have much to do with skill level of the casters for me, just a purely style/subject matter thing. And again, I don't see why people aren't allowed to be critical/express what they dislike, even if they're the vast minority. I've always found it ridiculous that people who express a dislike for crowd favorite casters tend to get mocked mercilessly by others for it - this was especially prominent when Smash first saw a big influx of newcomers and HMW/Phil's style were off-putting to some newer viewers, or when there were heavy disagreements on whether D1/Prog were a "good" casting duo. I think it is less that the commentators are bad per se and more that summit commentating is different from standard commentating. I don't mind it most of the time, but some of the time I do find myself wishing that they would actually talk about the game instead of mafia or w/e. I think a big part of the draw of Summit/Summit-style events is for closer, more intimate interaction with the top players. If M2K and Leffen or even S2J/Ice/Infinite Numbers/etc. got on cam and started shooting the shit about random stuff/Mafia/whatever, I don't think people really care. But when it's a bunch of casters (many of whom we see PLENTY of at normal events) and fringe "personalities" who do the same thing, I think people are justifiably annoyed.

Except I think you could argue that the 5 were even more dominant than TBLS and Armada is like, the ULTIMATE Weapon or something. On March 06 2017 12:07 stuchiu wrote: There is Winter and Synderen. And Merlini is an old legend. There's no way you could plausibly argue that they were "top 100" in the last few years though. I take that back, if we scale both communities, there might be a case... not sure how that'd work. If you scaled by raw player base, then sure, Dota has at least 100x the players and they have to be in the top 10000. Not sure what to compare smash tourney (at least 2 locals?) entries with for Dota... qualifiers/tourneys?

Some of the Summit couches were enjoyable, some weren't. And though motbob made the legitimate point that there were plenty of current or former top 100 players commentating, not all of them (a) have actually precise game knowledge (though they certainly have "feel"/practical knowledge; otherwise they wouldn't be good!), or (b) can actually communicate this game knowledge effectively. Nearly every commentator has made mistakes on game mechanics while commentating, which is acceptable, but certain commentators continually make mistakes and learn from them very slowly, if at all, which is very offputting for me. Obviously different commentary is more enjoyable for certain people, and that's fine, but I don't think it's overly disrespectful to mute commentary that doesn't fit your taste. I agree that complaining on the internet non-constructively is sort of pointless; hopefully my criticisms are sorta constructive, though I didn't really direct them at anyone in particular so oh well...

Armada's dominance is arguably the greatest in any esport.

Lord, Alex19's commentary on day 4 was inappropriate.

As far as synergy goes, my first thought after the event ended was "Man, they didn't get a lot of the best players on the mic this time." But they actually did. The pairings just weren't as good as previous years and didn't bring the best out of the players. For example, there wasn't really anyone there willing to bring Chudat out of his shell on commentary. Chillin could have if he'd made it in, but Hugs should have done a better job there, too. Mango was on with Lucky... when they were drunk. They put Leffen on a couch with three regular casters even though he had great synergy last Summit with three other top players. It was just a lot of weird groups that didn't work very well together.

And Winter still coaches teams. And for example DAC had PPD as an annalist, one of the best dota captains of recent times. The thing is pros don't bother casting when there are multi million dollar tournaments to prepare for.
