what? Moon is the best wc3 player ever. Is he 100%? not even close my friend.

It's the elephant in the room that the best Brood War players would dominate SC2? How is that the unpopular opinion at all? I think that may be a bit of a stretch.
I'm pretty sure Artosis and Tasteless have never made any baseless claims about the skill of any of the players mentioned, but commented on their skill in terms of relativity to the people they're playing against or the viewers watching. I can't say I've watched every hour of Tastosis talking but I don't get the impression they would lightly make comparisons to the current BW mega-pros.
Making a pro team in Brood War was impressive, period. It's a testament to the skill of the players just mentioning they were B-teamers, which they usually (always?) specify when they mention BW. The term "washed up brood war pros" switching was thrown around pretty handily.
Personal opinion is that BW players are certainly more well-developed in terms of mechanics and have the potential to dominate. However, I'm still not fully convinced the two games are similar enough in terms of balance to see the overpowering win % or dominance they hold in BW. Nobody is dominating so fully in any scene of SC2 atm. Is it because none of the current players were actively destroying BW when they made the switch as the OP might suggest? It's possible, and I'd love the opportunity to find out when it happens.
Regardless really well written and interesting, good job stat gathering etc.

Why not test their skills to master another game, hell if i had already been on their salaries for a few years, money wouldn't be an issue, getting bored and wanting a new challenge would be.
BW will not last forever, sc2 will take over completely, it's just a matter of when. They need to get on the sc2 train now before it leaves them behind. SC2 is not even a complete game yet. What do you see in it that made you think it will replace BW?
Such a silly question, what did people see in broodwar that would replace other games?
Potential.

The top RTS talent is in BW, where there is the most money to be made from playing RTS... Is this a surprise to anyone?

A great writeup, nice to read for players new to the scene (such as myself) to get some knowledge and perspective on SC2 v.s BW. I long to see if the prediction regarding the influx of BW players and their coming influence on the progaming climate turns out to be correct. As stated, SlayerS proved that practice makes perfect, and if the practice style of SC2 pro-houses is actually complacent overall compared to that in BW houses then the top tier should be in for a remake.

Great job with the article!

I think the difference between both games is.. too practice BW is simple, you already know the best BO's against every strategy, there is almost no one player that can make up an original BO that works consistantly.
Sc2 on the other hand is still being figured out, people don't practice their mechanics as much as BW pros do because they're still figuring out the best way to beat certain strategies.
TL;DR BW comes with a set of rules that you must follow. In sc2 you're making up the rules as you learn for now.
Great article btw, except for the whole Flash/Jaedong/Bisu > everything everywhere anywhere
P.S I want to see a good player from BW switch because I think that would force every player to step up their game. You are naive to think such a thing..No two bw games are the same and the metagame continues to evolve and change.. Hmm, I don't watch BW. I just thought that was the case from what i've heard

I gotta agree with this entirely.
MBS and automine and the whole nature of SC2 put this glass ceiling on the skill level of the game. It's like taking baseball and basically making the ball and bat plastic so it's impossible to make the ball go anywhere. Anyone can play. You can be godly, but it won't show. You'll be the same as anyone else.
You can talk on and on about how the game is still being figured out, but if MBS and automine are here to stay, I really can't see how it will develop into something resembling the skill of BW.
And I'm going to go one step further and say that some of the people defending SC2 just don't want to admit that the game they are playing and the players they cheer for are actually shit compared to Brood War mid-levels.

Why are the BW community are so angst against the SC2 community, is simply because the people who watch SC2 are mostly people who jump onto this "new idea", and just give their plain bias-ed point of view of BW. As a person who plays SC2, I can say that BW is much more challenging then SC2. The fact that there are still patches for SC2 means that the game is still not balanced, as compared to a game that has been tried and tested for so long.
And anybody even worthy to be called a "Starcraft" fan should first go play both games, and watch both games, and will find that BW takes so much more skill, and concentration. Of course one can be obstinate at be stuck at his own point of view " Oh SC2 got better graphics better future more promises."
Go try your hand at BW, get owned, and then cry that BW is so hard to play and master. Only then, you will understand.

I love the article, but I also think that Code S/A BW players aren't guaranteed to be top SC2 players. However, the article strongly implies that what makes these players beasts is their work ethic.Given a few months to learn the metagame of SC2, what we can reasonable expect is that SC1 pros will approach the game methodically and with a great work ethic. Of course a Code S player walking into SC2 and approaching it half-assed may not dominate the game, but they're much more likely to approach SC2 with a BW work ethic and win.
Some of those players who were mediocre at BW who have come to dominate SC2 may have changed their work ethic significantly to become winners at SC2. I think we'll have more insight on this in a years time because the first 6 months of SC2 top play was not the greatest (watch Fruitdealers road to GSL1 win for example).

Great article, I really don't see why so many SC2 followers get offended by it. If you've enjoyed the SC2 games thus far, then you'll still enjoy them.
People saying that "oh I can't enjoy SC2 anymore with the knowledge that BW has so many better players" need to think really hard about that statement. From the outset it's been clear that BW still has the more developed and dominating scene, which doesn't mean SC2 can't be fun to watch. If you like rooting for your foreign heros then I don't think this knowledge is going to change that fact. If you like watching the best koreans go at it in GSL, then you're still being served, because, currently they ARE the best koreans in SC2. Flash and Jaedong are of course fucking incredible players and no doubt they would have a big impact if they switched, however it is wrong to say that it will only occur if they are around. There can be no question in mind, that if FlaSh can turn up randomly during BWs reigning time and take the scene by storm, that a new flash is lurking among the korean population that will try SC2, and maybe prove even more dominant.
The focus on practice houses and the matter of SC2 pros not practicing as much as BW pros is also a non-issue, because as competition increases and useful training regimes are discovered, the amount of time invested into practice in SC2 will naturally rise. You're kidding yourself if you think Boxer started off with the same training regime that BW players on the SKT1 team have now, but it will eventually be at that point if not even more, because SC2 mechanical differences are even smaller so tweaking them will only display at the highest levels. I have yet to see a single livestream of SC2 that displays the full potential of speed for the game, IdrA and Nony(tyler) seem so slow compared to their BW games that it will only be matter of time before they start increasing their speed.
TL;DR - Don't rage.

I agree with most of the things in this article (especially the part about JD's and Flash's work ethic), except I feel like this article is downplaying SC2 a little too much. I believe the competition is ok as long as its fun to watch for the spectators, and for me its very fun to watch sc2 compared to BW (probably due to the graphics but still). Besides, it took years for players to reach this level of mechanics, and sc2 is only a year old (the part about time has probably been stated numerous times already). My point is that, lets just enjoy SC2 for what it is right now, and stop thinking about how better it could be if more BW players switched over (they will eventually anyway).

I'm curious about how many people actually play BW now. The BW strategy forums are pretty dead, it doesn't even fill a page over the last two weeks and the most active thread is about BW mechanic crossover to SC2. SC2 has 14 pages of threads over the same time frame.
There are a lot of fans of BW for sure, but is it mostly viewers and not players at this point for people outside of Korea? Does the author of this post actively play either game?

yawn, just another bw elitist trying to cover it up with nice phrasing.
"Perhaps motivation flagged after they won too many tournaments, or maybe the prize money was too distracting. "
or perhaps its a different game, with different mechanics, that works different way. easier? fine, i can accept that, go enjoy bw being a better game and gtfo.
god, is this really worthy of TL front page? lol

Well -- duh.
Is there any game, sport, or competition where there's NOT a chance to see new players come and dominate?
The OP needed an entire article to say:
"Guys - there's going to be some really good SC2 players in the future."
...
As an aside, does the OP think XD's~Grrrr... sat around saying "Gee, I should probably stop playing and start worrying because at some point someone (perhaps their names will be Flash/Jaedong) are going to come along and kick my ass in this game, making everything I've done look like romper room playtime." ?

Only two ex-BW pros have the distinction of being above average in their past careers:
(T)RainBOw, Code S, GSL silver and bronze - 116-114 (50.43%) (P)Ace, stomped white dudes at IEM – 2-0 (100%)
I thought Nada and Boxer were pretty good.

Let the elephant continue to graze in the BW pastures I say, and continue living out its gentle decline.
The article pointed out that Boxer/Nada/July (the BW legends playing SC2) were way passed their prime in the BW scene. MC/Nestea/MVP (the current top SC2 players) were at the bottom of the barrel in the BW scene.
I'm of the opinion that the current top BW players won't make the switch because they are getting paid too well. So much so that Flash/JD/Bisu will probably retire as BW pros.

Whether or not this article is obviously right or wrong, it could have easily been rewritten without the condescending tone. It's just inciting flames even though people are claiming that it wasn't originally meant to.
As a fan of both scenes, I'm sad to see that this is in Teamliquid's front page. I don't see the constant need to prove BW's superiority over and over again.
