Quite a few people reading Bonnouji.
It's a good series. Quite behind on scanlation, according to Spazer.

So I started reading Muv Luv Alternative and read about an hour or two so far. From my understanding, it seems like it is suppose to be a serious war VN but those super cutesy bishojo elements really bug me such as the bunny ears, the loli, and the oversized breasts on all the characters. It just feels so out of place for an alien invasion.
However, I will still keep reading it because it has to be one of the best VNs for a reason.

This post implies that you didn't read MuvLuv Extra and Unlimited. Is that correct? Because it's sort of an important prerequisite...
If you haven't yet, stop immediately and go through Extra and Unlimited first!
The bare minimum is: Extra: finish the 2 main heroine routes + Show Spoiler +
Sumika and Meiya
to unlock Unlimited Unlimited: 1 playthrough, any heroine is okay
If you have time, the other routes in Extra will give you more insight into Unlimited and Alternative since there's a number of characters from those routes that will show up again. I'd say Chizuru's was pretty good; people also seem to like Tama's.
I will vouch for the narrative quality of Alternative given completion of Extra and Unlimited (even though I didn't find it perfect). The first two kind of suck and are a pain to sit through, but just skipping them ruins everything.
One of the biggest downfalls of the series is that it requires you to sit through two frankly, rather bad and painfully generic segments before you can get anything meaningful out of the third instalment, (which actually good writing). The first two not so much, but are important in setting things up...unfortunately.
Alternatively (no pun intended), just go read the plot summary of the first two on one of the many kind blogs written by people aimed at sparing others from suffering through what they have. I would actually recommend this.

Yeah, just reading synopses sounds like a much better idea, I know the feeling when there's a really good sequel that requires knowledge of the contents of one or more terrible terrible predecessors lol

Tama's route is only worthwhile one from my experience, but that's cause fuck lacrosse and the power-up sprites.. I thought Ayamine's was ok but I mainly did it cos Sent said I will laugh when I get further into Alternative, lol. Still waiting for that moment.

I disagree about reading the synopses being enough. Like in Extra, the actual events that happen in it really aren't important. Whats important is how it introduces the characters. Unlimited then plays heavily off the genre swap from Extra to Unlimited, and then Alternative takes what was built in Unlimited and makes it Godlike. Maybe you can ctrl through alot of it, but skipping it entirely should be out of the question.
Skipping Extra and Unlimited is a good way to not really give a fuck about half the cast in Alternative.
I can understand the Extra hate, although when I re-read it recentlyish, I didn't mind it as much other than FUCKING LACROSSE. Unlimited was kinda boring, but meh. Alternative though... Once you hit the Coup arc, things get so good.

Shit, according to VNDB, the game is about 30-50 hours long, I guess I can manage since summer is coming.

Honestly, you can blow through Extra kinda quickly. It is generic, painfully generic when you just want to get to the good stuff, but its not a long VN. Just read through either Sumika or Meiya's route, and then ctrl through whichever one of those you didn't read the first time. Then you move onto Unlimited, and you only need to do one arc there (since they are all identical, save for whoever Takeru decides to fuck at the end).

Ah, fair enough. I've almost no experience with MuvLuv beyond recognizing the cover (._.), so I was mostly speaking out of turn based on my general experience/personal preference with sequels of all kinds. Should refrain from posting unless I a) find something about which I can actually speak from an edified perspective, or b) really start up anime/manga again and be able to match up, haha sorry... and I don't really read VNs either heh (only read like 4 or 5, some parts with ctrl-skim too) so
I will for sure try to participate regularly and not suck/contribute (awk word to use for adt I guess, but meh) after exams though! :D
Edit: grr formatting. I've heard that manga in general isn't doing so hot atm though. Random thought--I wish Mx0 wouldn't have gotten axed. I remember reading that and being surprised when they just ended it so soon...
