This image is gold and relects 100% what I was thinking during my 8 years of highschool where I was forced to interpret Goethe, Schiller and co. work.

I love it ![[image loading]](http://www.comicbookmovie.com/images/users/uploads/21958/Master%20Roshi.jpg) ![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/9DJsL2i.png) I posted this awhile back. I don't think its a reference to Lucy from fairy tail since its just by name. The whole tournament, using a fake name, and hiding in disguise is actually a dragonball reference Master yoshi went under disguise in a tournament imitating a jackie chan name i think Yep this is definitely a dragonball reference, as many things are a tribute to dragonball in One Piece. Oda always said he is a huge Dragonball fan and his dream always was to create a work just as great (I would say he succeded with One Piece). Well he shouldn't be so modest, his work is above and beyond any manga ever created.

I don't think everything has a deeper meaning in one piece, but the amount of detail and the way oda keeps bringing back seemingly unimportant stuff constantly blows my mind. He really is a master of storytelling.

How to build a story, character development, climax development, drawing techniques, old and current authors, what's their styles, what projects do they work on, how do they do in their publications or in book sales, etc.
Does he know about the weekly plot development of all serialized mangas in Japan? He has nothing to learn from it. If anything, it could be bad influence on how he builds himself stories. Oda does not take advice from his own editors, I can't picture him secretly reading mangas to "learn" techniques or "get ideas".
While he knows a thousand times more than all of us together about techniques and the manga industry, I am pretty sure that most of us know more about the actual stories and plot developments in other mangas than him. Not taking the advice directly doesn't mean he's completely ignoring everything. If you can show me a source saying he doesn't give a single fuck about the advice from editors I'll concede. As for whether he reads manga or not again I highly doubt he does not currently read even a single work of other mangaka. Would be pretty conceited of him to think he knows everything and there is nothing to learn.
I don't think I have said he reads no manga at all or that, I just think he reads much less than the casual manga fan, and I don't think Fairy Tail is one the few mangas he reads, that's all.
About editors, Oda and his editors themselves have stated he does not take advice on the story. But he does listen about details like character design, etc. And that was not always the case, at the beginning, like all young authors, he used to do what editors told him to do (like "we must be at grand line by chapter 100" hence the 4-chapter arc of Logue Town). Now, like other popular authors, he has much more freedom.

Oda and Mashima (fairy tail's mangaka) worked together as assistants in Rurouni Kenshin so it's not that farfetched that he'd read FT.

Oh Oda used to work for Kenshin? That's one of my favourite manga of all time...

yeah, the RK mangaka even put in a little nod to OP when it started

As far as I know Mashima has never been anybody's assistant. I think it is just a rumor because Oda's and Mashima's art styles are similar.

Good example of an unambiguous reference

huh, you're right. Wiki says he (Mashima) never worked as an assistant.

Even if he doesnt read manga to copy them, he has to atleast know what he's doing is original. So yes he does have to read to know he's which/either. Basics guys, you can worship him as god but reading other mangakas work is nothing to be ashamed off.
+ Show Spoiler +Go read Takehiko Inoue work if you want to read the work of god =D REAL.

709 is out now, but I can't find Engrish. I guess I should just be patient. :p
Has anyone here ever just said "fk it" and looked at the Japanese release?

Since it just came out I'll put this in a spoiler:
+ Show Spoiler +The block ended as expected, though I was hoping for more from Bellamy.
It was cute how Luffy cheered for him =3
Hoping for a small break from the tournament next week. Seems like they'll be setting up Franky's movements now.

+ Show Spoiler +So how do you beat a barrier man? Enh, silly block. Looking forward to see Lucy kick some ass. There's no doubt he'll win his block (I mean, I hope there's no doubt). The way I see it is that he'll win his block but he'll pay for it somehow. Probably through the revelation of his identity, which isn't a good thing for him.
The entire arc seems to have a great plot but holy shit, what a very long wait to read everything. I mean, what's going on with Zoro and Sanji? What is Law doing at the moment? What's going on on the ship?

Shit, I should wait for a better translation because this was a bit of a mess but seems like an awesome chapter!
