It's potentially "i get to be the only special one and no competition" mindset. Or maybe something like "if you arent with me then you are against me" or some other reasons. Plenty of possibilities after all human ambition, cruelty and paranoia can only go far.
It's not unheard in fiction where a tyrant figures dervives from a race who got wiped and it was the tyrants own doing like i can remember one example from Cosmere which I wont specify which one but there was a character there who kinda started playing eugenics with his own kind so that he has competition in the future. Not unusual for immortal figures too to play that path in the longterm
