Deeply unsettling movie. I went into it with no expectations except that it scored a 90% on RT. It just gives everything to you straight. It’s one of those movies you have to marinate on after you watch it. Then when you watch it again you pay more attention to the details and get to see the groundwork getting laid up. It’s on Netflix. It’s 10pm and I’m scared to shower now. Great. Sound 10/10 Acting 10/10 Picture 10/10

Its silly. A tire comes to life and lives, some people are watching and it gets meta, in some surprising ways and some obvious ways. Quite enjoyable, mostly just very silly and you end up thinking "Why am I watching this tire move around a desert, like wtf has become of my life". Amusing for a bit, very silly maybe 6/10 + Show Spoiler +

I literally spent the last hour reading up on a reddit thread from 4 years ago. + Show Spoiler + Lots of interesting ideas that came up: one of them being that each member of the family represented the seven deadly sins. + Show Spoiler + On a more story-driven topic: The depiction of the father being the rock and protagonist of the story then the slow deterioration of his role which quickly reveals that he was the reason they were subject to damnation due to his pride (also the scene where Thomasin unleashes her wrath of all his failures). The symbolism of the wooden logs killing him as that was the only thing he was successful in doing since being banished (inability to hunt and harvest) Excuse my bad grammar/formatting, I’m typing on my phone edit: Okay im on my PC. Apple scene: + Show Spoiler + This scene stood out to me the most. There were so many things that got revealed in quick succession. Firstly: the APPLE. At this moment everyone in the family knew that it was for sure witchcraft. This now leads to the blame game: The Twins instantly points at Thomasin (audience knows its not her). Thomasin blames the Twins and their connection to the Goat, Black Philip. This is the turning point of the movie where we're revealed the true antagonist (not the witch that killed Samuel in the start). Now this makes me question how Black Philip got to the family in the first place. Was the goat possessed before or after their banishment. When did the devil decide to prey on the family (namely Thomasin). My mind is still reeling with the info dump.

Justice League Dark: Apokolips War Damn that was dark. Really, if you'd like to watch something like Avengers: Endgame but rated R this is the thing. Don't want to spoil too much but to talk about this I need to use a bit of spoilers anyway... Seeing some of your favorite heroes being eaten alive, torn in half with guts spread all over etc. is kinda disturbing. The only thing I didn't really like was making Raven Indian, not sure where it came from but it stuck out to me as really odd as she's usually depicted with this pale white/greyish skin and going to this dusky complexion with hindi features just didn't seem right. Here's what I mean:

So its a western horror. The kind that keeps you on the edge... and keeps pushing you towards the edge... closer.. and closer.. Characters are likeable. Score was good. Setting was good, quite immersive. The story is nothing deep or crazy, pretty straightforward. I found some parts comedic--a very dry, dark humor if you will. Kurt Russel and his moustache worked overtime with this movie and Hateful 8 lol. 8/10. PS: dont google images or videos if you dont want to get spoiled.

TENET Watching this made me realize it's been ages since I've been to the cinema. Probably something like 1917 last January. Christopher Nolan's Tenet was supposed to be one of this summer's huge blockbusters, but it got pushed back time and again, until it got a limited release. And it's almost Peak Nolan. There's the trademark constant undercurrent of tension, the momentum, the practical effects, the rad soundtrack, the locations all around the planet, and the impeccable suits. Looks and sounds gorgeous. Probably closest to an actual logic puzzle that I've seen in a long while. It's kind of hard to pinpoint how I feel about the film, because seeing these original blockbusters is very rare. It's such a refreshing change to see practical effects and actual film stock with such a big budget. Go see it if you like Nolan, or original blockbusters, or logic puzzles, or all of the above.

These flaws just become so much more obvious if you compare it to e.g. Inception, where the motivation for Leo's family is pretty engaging and gripping compared to Tenet's plot. That said, it has a couple cool scenes so it's OK in terms of entertainment value in a cinema.

Good film. I'm surprised to find out that I actually Agree with Barney from How I Met Your Mother. Danny is a whiny little brat who starts all the crap and doesn't deserve to win in the end. This film is a tragedy disguised as an inspirational movie lol. I hope this was intentional although i have a feeling that maybe it wasn't. 8/10

To me this felt a lot more like Eternal Sunshine with the heart ripped out and replaced with a beautifully bleak hopelessness (which really resonated with me, especially in 2020). I'd give it a 4.5 or 5/5. The only thing I'd change would be cutting the last scene. + Show Spoiler + I know why it's there but it really detracts from the film and is the thematic equivalent of dropping a truck transporting anvils on your head after you already have cranial bruising from a series of pianos.

I'm not sure I can emotionally handle something like that right now. Might have to put that one off for when I'm feeling real analytical. As for Tenet, I feel like if I pick the right time and the right theater I could justify going to a showing. I don't really want to miss out on a Nolan release in theater, he shoots for the big screen and it's always a treat.

Moneyball is entertaining though. 7/10 The GM of a team that was very successful in 2001 was asked to continue that success in 2002 on a small budget with a few players leaving to go to other teams offering big money. Moneyball never talks about how great starting pitching is the foundation of their team. They talk about losing 1 relief pitcher who threw something like 70 innings in 2001 and was leaving in 2002. The movie spends lots of time explaining how their unusual player evaluation methods will allow them to replace to really good hitters that are leaving. Welp, the 2001 A's scored 884 runs and the 2002 A's scored 800 runs. They never really replaced the 2 big hitters. The movie also featured such great innovative insights as "a walk is as good as a hit". They made it sound like in 2002 no one thought this way. LOL. The foundation of the team's success is 4 really good starting pitchers who pitch the vast majority of the team's innings. This is ignored the entire movie. All that said, the movie is entertaining and it touches upon some themes that make baseball a great game. EDIT: i should add... everyone's favourite video game executive, Bobby Kotick, is in the movie as the owner of the baseball team.

The result was that pro baseball had no idea how to describe a good baseball player beyond "we know one when we see one" and they got that wrong more often than not. What was needed was a modelling system that could award partial runs to specific plays based on their statistical probability of impacting the game. A fielder standing in a certain place could reduce the likelihood of the batter making a certain play and that play has a variable number of expected runs and therefore, depending on the number of bases loaded, the fielder standing in that place may has a quantifiable, but situationally variable, expected value. If you're a statistics (or poker) nerd then it's really quite interesting. The problem of how you quantify individual contributions to success in a team sport with so many variables is very challenging.
