Couldn't agree more about Parasite, it's a great movie. And the fact that it won the big Oscar should come as no surprise to TL.net users. Korean Starcraft is obviously the greatest thing of all time, and the teamhouse system applied to pop music logically led to Korean leadership in that industry as well. That Koreans are now conquering movies as well seems entirely natural.

Korea used to be more protectionist over their film industry, notably establishing quotas that limited how often foreign films could be shown over domestic films. While the quotas eventually got eased, they already helped establish a good foundation from which quality Korean directors and films could succeed domestically and spread overseas. They've got some brilliant, passionate filmmakers in Korea, and I'm glad they're getting recognition for their work.

Any fans of Leonard Nimoy//Spock? He is in "A Stitch in Crime" in the early 1970s.

Nimoy plays a renowned and skilled surgeon. Lieutenant Columbo is on the case in the death of his #1 research nurse.

Brilliant ending.

There were so many great Korean movies...

If you want to check out some more, here's a list of K movies that I enjoyed a lot in no particular order.

The Vengeance Trilogy (comprised of movies: Sympathy For Mr. Vengeance, Oldboy and Lady Vengeance)
I Saw the Devil
The Host (from the same guy who directed Parasite)
Snowpiercer (as above)
Memories of Murder
The Chaser

All those movies left a very good impression on me and were what actually got me into investigating Korean cinema a bit more. I highly recommend all of them.

I'd recommend these as well, though it's all genre film (more or less). In general anything from park chan-wook or bong joon-ho is worth a watch, though their english films are definitely worse than the korean ones.
I'd add lee chang-dong to the must see directors here, he doesn't really do genre but rather sensitive drama.
These three are probably the most famous directors out of korea, at least modern ones.

Outside of these i'd also recommend films like "right now, wrong then", "castaway on the moon", "my sassy girl", "the wailing", "the world of us", "hope", "3-iron" and more :D

It's not only about korean films either, foreign (as in not english speaking) scenes have a lot of great stuff out there.
As bong said when he won some award this season:

Once you overcome the one-inch tall barrier of subtitles, you will be introduced to so many more amazing films

The unrealistic sound of these propositions is indicative, not of their utopian character, but of the strength of the forces which prevent their realization.

It was on for 10 seasons. I've seen about 1/2 of them. I'd say "A Stitch in Crime" is the best one I've seen and I've watched it three times. Columbo has more physical problems than any real person I've ever known.

IMO, the show helped endear the stereotyped undocumented Italian immigrant into the hearts of the average american and canadian. That show and WWF wrestling were big factors in the 70s in getting North Americans to accept Italians as being "one of us".

Guns Akimbo

Skip it. Complete nonsense that aims for absurd humor but fails at it really hard. Not funny, not cool. I have no idea how this movie even got to the drawing board...

Edit: If you want to watch something in this vein that's actually entertaining go watch Death Race.

Knives Out was pretty legit. I was really taken back by how good everything was. The Southern accent was a bit much at times.

Harley Quinn was meh. Whoever called it a fever dream was right on the money. Just had no direction on where it was going. You care 0 about half of the birds.

Sonic was also another pleasant surprise. That's the Jim Carrey of old that I loved so much. The CGI was also just really amazingly done (you can see some bad spots but not enough to ruin the movie). The biggest issue was the hard G rating they went for. Everything seemed a bit too hammy and chummy for me. The actors were almost forced to overact some scenes and it shows lol.

I watched Color Out of Space (2020)

This is an adaptation of a Lovecraft story with Nic Cage, presented by Elijah Wood's production company (they were also responsible for the incredible Mandy).
The film has a corny, 80s vibe but also some pretty intense horror going on later on. Nic Cage is definitely Nic Cage in this one, not like he is in Mandy, but he definitely adds something to the film. Some of the practical effects are great, the sound design and look of the film are both really good.
It droops a bit in the middle though and some of the characters/writing are really bad. I guess its in a kitschy horror movie way so its acceptable as part of a fun movie to have terrible acting/writing, so it doesn't ruin the movie but iis definitely noticeable.

Overall I really enjoyed it, especially the weird horror elements it brings to the table, but I definitely won't remember it forever like Mandy, so I'm a bit disappointed in that way. Its not mindblowing, but it is a really fun movie.

Bloodshot was entertaining. It left so much to be desired however, so it's only good for a time sink and nothing more. The concepts could have been explored further but it didn't.

Well this review made me watch it, but not in the cinema.

I really liked it in some weird kind of way but I can totally see how some wouldn't like it or even walk out.

There is some strangely unfitting and sort of crappy music going on almost all the time. On top of that people are screaming at each other in every second scene.
But somehow that whole unpleasant mess made me really feel the stress of the main protagonist.
After what felt like 3 hours I was only half done and felt like I might have a heartattack any moment.

Not a feelgood relaxing movie but a memorable one.
I'm going to watch Good Time (2017) by the same directors soon.

Watched Uncut gems to see by myself if Adam Sandler could play something else than his regular goofy/idiot/unidimensional character.

The movie wasn't stellar, mostly because of the many characters with no real motivation/character arc, but for the first time, I enjoyed watching Sandler acting. As I discoverd watching a breadown by the director, most of the dialogues/interactions were improvised which really added to the realism of the scenes. I found myself rooting for the main character after an hour even though he was exposed as a total asshole...

The music though... Weird! The song at the credits (L'amour toujours - Gigi d'Agostino) was so out of place that I felt like I was being trolled.

The Greener Grass (2019)

This film is hilarious and weird. Its like all the silly bits from a Lynch movie glued together, but its also more than that. Its definitely in my top 5 American comedies.
Its a satire of suburban life but 'surreal' isn't quite a strong enough word. There's a sense of dread that builds throughout the movie (probably something to do with the excellent sound design & soundtrack) that you would normally feel in a film like 'kill list' but crossing that with ridiculous comedy works really well.

Its ambitious and fun and works 90% of the time.

9/10

A Prayer Before Dawn

Based on the true story of a English Muay Thai boxer who ends up in prison in Thailand due to his drug addiction. Pretty brutal and harrowing and has some good fight scenes. Mostly a story of resilience and redemption though. 8/10

A Street Cat Named Bob

Another one about drug addiction, based on a real story. A homeless street busker is going nowhere in life but he adopts a stray cat and things start to turn around with the help of friends. The movie is unapologetically uplifting, but enough grounded in reality to not go full cheese. Was a nice change from most reality centered shows that are dark and cynical about human nature. 7/10

Films you might not have heard of that I absolutely love for Coronavirus time.

I know this is a random list but it might be useful if you're running out of things to do/watch.

I'm leaving out well known films and action/thriller movies in favour of darker, more psychological stuff.

Comedies:
Four Lions
UK comedy about terrorists. I don't know what I can say about this film. If you haven't seen it, watch it. Its hilarious, meaningful and gets increasingly dark as film unfolds.
If you're American, do yourself a favour and get a version with subtitles. There's some heavy regional UK accents going on here.

Sorry to Bother You
Political comedy that veers into the absolutely ridiculous about half way through but never loses its soul. Its about fighting for justice against the corporate system of the US, but its about more than that too.

The Greener Grass
See my post earlier on this page. Highly recommended if you like Saturday Night Live style comedy. Dark, weird and funny.

Horror/dark (not real horror movies because I'm not a fan especially):
Mandy
My absolute favourite film of the last few years. Terrible things happen to Nic Cage and he goes on the most insane revenge mission you've ever seen against insidious forces of darkness. This movie is beautiful and horrifying, existential and meaningful, understated and.. Nic Cage. Its a must watch. The music and cinematography alone is worth the 2 hours.
Its not one for people that like heavily story focused movies though.

Mother!
I love this movie. It's trying to say alot of things in a short time and uses the currency of induced anxiety to make you feel its message. J-Law is great in this, and its one of the few movies that would accurately be described by the phrase 'psychological horror'. By the end I was genuinely shocked which never really happens with movies.

A field in England
This movie is a stupid, mad acid trip that'll leave you wondering what happened to reality for the last hour and a half. Absolutely fucked in the head, this one.

Inland Empire
This is David Lynch actually trying to make you scared instead of accidentally making you scared while writing a romcom. It works. This film is intense and really difficult to watch but its worth it for the feeling you're left with afterwards.

A pig farmer, some kind of worm that allows you to mind control people, quiet dialogue that has you stretching to hear what people are talking about, and human connections in a bleak, individualized hell. Distressing and depressing, but very, very good from the guy who made Primer. Amazing soundtrack.

Jacob's Ladder
Classic psychological movie about a Vietnam war vet suffering from delusions and bad dreams. One of those films where you never really know what's supposed to be real and what's a dream/delusion.

Waking Life
Strangely animated movie about dreams/dreaming/lucid dreaming. I used to absolutely love it, but don't watch it if you're taking a philosophy course cos its basically philosophy 101 in animated form. Its trippy though.

A Scanner Darkly
Like Waking Life but also a real movie with Keanu Reeves, Woody Harrelson, Downey Jr and Winona Ryder, based on the Philip K Dick novel. Should be more well known and referenced than it is. Smartly written, beautifully animated and well acted.

Unclassifiable
Beyond the Black Rainbow:
Experiments on human consciousness left to run riot with no supervision and the corruption of hippy culture associated with that are the themes of this one. Its like a 90 minute music video, but maybe the best music video you ever saw. Again not one for people who are into complex stories and plotting, but more of an AV experience. I loved it.

Some general weird movies:
The Holy Mountain:
This movies is legendary in weird film circles. It has a massacre of dressed up frogs.
A massacre of frogs in tiny uniforms.
And some human poo.
Its all about astrology and new age philosophy. Good stuff

Upstream Color
A pig farmer, some kind of worm that allows you to mind control people, quiet dialogue that has you stretching to hear what people are talking about, and human connections in a bleak, individualized hell. Distressing and depressing, but very, very good from the guy who made Primer. Amazing soundtrack.

Jacob's Ladder
Classic psychological movie about a Vietnam war vet suffering from delusions and bad dreams. One of those films where you never really know what's supposed to be real and what's a dream/delusion.

Animated
Waking Life
Strangely animated movie about dreams/dreaming/lucid dreaming.

I loved it. From the same guy who made Mandy.
