I really don't see how the movie can exist in the same world as WW84 and aquaman.
Except they ruined the antagonist whose only distinguishing feature is that he's an asshole who hates women without any other traits really.
Except he shows a lof of traits in the movie and doesn't hate women just wants the McGuffin which he considers his.

I saw it too but for me it was one of the worst movies I seen recently. 3/10 bad.

What do you mean "for once"? There was Wonder Woman, Alita, Annihilation, A Star is Born and those are just the recent ones I enjoyed a lot that are focused on female cast.
Birds of Prey was simply disappointing. They could've done so much better with it, considering how many things they got right, but in the end the things they got wrong overshadowed them.

I ment more for the main cast being mostly female like ghostbusters and oceans seven. I didn't see Annihilation.
I think my expectations were extremely low but I liked the fight scenes with how focused and steady they were more like john wick and less like the bourne super cut style thats been popular more recently. I also had low expectations for the black canary and huntress characters and they turned out to be decent multi note written characters instead of being "strong female". It was edited down a lot and wasn't overfilled with content like other DC movies.

Annihilation is so far the best all-female cast movie I think.
And BoP fight scenes looked like John Wick because they hired the John Wick fight scene choreographer to reshoot some of them (and that's why some of them were great and some were just bad or ridiculous).
best movie i ever saw that was primarily female and was directed by a woman was "Monster" with Christina Ricci and Charlize Theron. It is an absolute masterpiece.

Right. I meant Annihilation as a recent example Was trying to only include movies from the past 2-3 years.

you literally just said they got many things right.
Considering the character we're talking about is Harley freakin' Quinn and the story is being told from her perspective I would say they made it a hot mess on purpose.
The theatre I was in laughed at Ewan antics multiple times as he has his moments and considering how many DC films we got that were completely fucked up I would say this is a step in the right direction.

i guess "for once" is in the last 2 or 3 years?
this fascination with who is on screen has been around a long long time. and its kinda weird. In Canada the CRTC is constantly overseeing TV and movies. SCTV was designated as "American Content" by the CRTC in 1981. Talk about totally fucking stupid. The SCTV cast had the greatest response to total fucking stupid government intervention ever. Their response? "The Great White North"

Oh, more than just something. I wasn't feeling optimistic about its chances at Best Picture and Best Director, but boy did they overturn my expectations. Feels like compensation for years of good Korean movies that never really succeeded in the American awards circuit.

Parasite deserves every bit of praise and recognition. It's entertaining as hell and extremely well-crafted, and the details keep reeling me back in to pondering their place in the film and its messages. 1917 was great too, but I felt a bigger impact from Parasite.
I really enjoyed Parasite, even if its social themes and commentary passed over my head on first watch. The mid-movie twist was really crazy (I'm still cracking up at the part where the dad says "Careful don't send the video by accident!" ). It wasn't until I read articles about it and watched analysis videos that I finally realized the movie was even better than I originally thought heh.
I tend to shy away from Korean films since all the ones I've watched tend to be really weird and depressing, but maybe now's the time to delve deeper down into that rabbit hole.
Bong Joon-ho's acceptance speech for Best Director was really something, so humble.
Couldn't agree more about Parasite, it's a great movie. And the fact that it won the big Oscar should come as no surprise to TL.net users. Korean Starcraft is obviously the greatest thing of all time, and the teamhouse system applied to pop music logically led to Korean leadership in that industry as well. That Koreans are now conquering movies as well seems entirely natural.
I love Korean movies. My favorite is probably Man From Nowhere followed closely, very closely, by Old Boy. But Parasite just did not do it for me. I watched the first 1.5 hours and struggled for a literal month to finish the rest. I don't know why.
I asked a Korean friend what he thinks about Parasite winning, and he says nah he doesn't watch that kind of movie. Maybe it was too artsy? Anyways, I'm looking forward to watching it, as well as most of the nominated films. Jojo Rabbit looks particularly good to me.
Not sure why people think Oldboy is good. Within the first 15 minutes it's blatantly obvious what's going on and what the 'twist' is. I was permanently annoyed the entire movie because of it.
