+ Show Spoiler [book spoiler] + Pretty good guess if you didn't read the books.

Season 3 had me on the edge of my couch for all 13 episodes but the first 2 were magnificent as well. I envy you for the experience of watching it all over again anew. I understand that it had to end somewhere, and season 6 is the most logical point to call it a show. It is still very sad that this fantastic show had to come to a premature end. They probably gave it all they could under pressure to end the show quick. Especially the last episode feels very rushed unfortunately. Just splitting the last episode in 2 and spending a LITTLE bit more time on the threat of the Free Navy in the final would have made it a proper ending. They can't even have known before the first episode aired that it was being cancelled, because otherwise including the whole Cara + Xan plot makes no sense at all. I honestly thought they included the whole Laconia bit was included so they could jump straight in in season 7, probably reducing the 30-year time jump to only 5 or so (wouldn't really be very believable, and would probably compound problems toward season 9, but seems like the only way to even contemplate continuing).
But otherwise, Cara + Xan are Handwaviums anyway in the main series. This intro to them was from the Strange Dogs novella, and leaving all of Laconia out would have been entirely fine if they knew this was the last season before editing.
Imho season 5 and especially season 6 were very inferior to previous seasons and also the books (although Naomi is whiny and boring there too). Overall still a very good show, and a shame it got cancelled twice.

They absolutely did know that season 6 was the last season. It was publicly announced before season 6 started production. It was even kind of clear before season 4. When Amazon picked up the show they asked the runners "when is the earliest you can finish the story". And Babylons Ashes is the obvious answer. Moreover it seems they were under constrains even for the last season, as it feels kind of rushed with only 6 episodes. At least the final episode should have been split into 2 - one assault on the slow zone, one defense of the slow zone.
Why they spend so much time on Laconia we can only guess. Book fan service? Maybe they just wanted to give us a glimpse of what Laconia can look like on the screen now that we won't get the final arc.

All that said the final arc would have been incredibly challenging and expensive to shoot, and the final final basically impossible to properly bring on the screen. As sad as I am of not seeing more Laconia (magnetars!) on screen, I completely understand that it was unrealistic to shoot the complete Laconia arc.

Tomorrow the most likely last bit of original Expanse content is going to be released: The novella Sins Of Our Fathers. From what we hear it most likely takes place after the final book. One more day, can't wait!

I'm going to start rewatching this I think. Since it finished I feel a little bit empty lol. I don't think we'll see a sci fi show this good for a long time. I was trying to think of all my favourite scenes and there's so many throughout all the seasons. The Julie flashback in episode 9, Bobbie at the ocean, the launching of the Nauvoo, Drummer's speeches, the first time you see the Razorback in action, Ashford and Drummer singing together, Holden and the Roci escorting the Weeping Somnambulist through the Martian blockade. Its all executed so well.
Looking back this show is still a solid 10/10 for me.
