magic.
the story is heading too much towards magic being the central conflict and resolution. the first 3 books were more about middle ages political strife and military warfare. magic was just on the fringes to sort of spook the people and create a surreal mystery on the horizon. now magic is popping up everywhere and is creating problems that do not mesh with how the story was unfolding in the first 3 books.
4th book has little magic. By POVs Prologue: Faceless men / talk of dragons / candles Arya: Faceless men Sansa: No magic Jaime: No magic Samwell: No magic / talk of dragons Cersei: Qyburn / talk of dragons Brienne: Zombie Catelyn Aeron: Rituals / talk of dragons Areo: No magic Asha: No magic / talk of dragons Arys: No magic Victarion: No magic / talk of dragons Arianne: No magic / talk of dragons
I most likely missed something, but the point remains. I think your problem is with the knot being around daenerys and her dragons, or just with the 5th book.

Yeah fifth book is like Harry Potter. Sparkles and magic in every page it feels like.

I'm halfway through book 5, and I'm in a severe lack of Arya here. Where's Arya? Is she blind? Fml. It's kind of annoying that there seems to be so little Arya in this one. My favourite character by far I think.

Arya was in book 4 so she isn't in book 5 until the last ~30% when it starts covering all regions again.

Ordered the first 3 books, since season 3 starts in April and The legend of Korra is over.Taught to myself why not.The book is all ways better then the movie/tv show right? ^_^

No, they are much worse. With the TV series, you are used to this kind of pacing, an episode a week, a new season every year... It's what you would expect of any other show. With the books on the other hand, you have no limit but your self control. You can finish each book in a few weeks, always having the next one in your hands ready to be devoured. Then you finish all 5 of them and it dawns on you. You could be waiting another 5 years for the next one, like people waited for the 5th. The series has been going one for more than a decade, that's like half of your whole life (possibly). You only option is to endure and feel sorry for whoever that to deal with this since the first books.
So yeah, I wouldn't say they are all ways better than the show, but they are pretty good. And in all seriousness, I don't believe he will take as long for the next ones, trying to avoid spoilers, I would say the last 2 were a real problem, setting up all the plotlines and puzzles while the next ones are mostly about moving the story forward and unfolding everything he has alreary planned in his mind.

It isn't that bad waiting for them to come out, but I only joined just after #3...some of the people who go back over 15 years with it might be driven mad by now. I have to point out, this IS a Starcraft forum at the end of the day. People around here can wait on new installments. Hell, some here dislike it when the new installments come out.
Yes, he wrote himself into quite a mess at the end of book 3 that he had to straighten out and consolidate. It seems set to be cleaned up. It all depends on early book 6 to possibly complete the process now. It might not be too much to hope for a return to the greatness of the early books now that things are coming together again.
He also has some extra pressure on him to get them out faster as to not run into a problem for the show. Good for time, possibly bad for quality.

Wasn't it the red priest guy with his flaming sword who got cut from shoulder to navel or something by the hound but got saved by the priest for the umpteenth time as well?

Beric's died like seven times and the red priest resurrects him
although I think it was Beric that resurrected Cat?

Yes and thus he lost his "flame" and is no longer alive from what I got from the books.

I too am optimistic that the next two books will come out with a relatively shorter span, I hope that the creation of the TV show and the games gives him the spark to want to finish his legacy. However, this isn't Harry Potter, it will still be 2-3 years at the bare minimum.
I seriously envy the people who are just getting into the books... the wait for the latest book was immense. Those who patiently waited to know more about Dany would feel super about Dance with Dragons, but there are some people who havn't had much to read about their favorite chars for over 10 years now.

Being extremely optimistic, we can expect TWoW around 2014, and ADoS around 2016. More likely projections put the series ending around 2020 (unless he extends it to 8 books).
GRRM is currently 63, so lets hope he stays healthy.

GRRM is currently 63, so lets hope he stays healthy. the chances for the 14-16 release are slim to non existent, i'd guess 2015-2019. Which would be trouble for the series to be sure, but GRRM has less time than ever, with the series being such a hit and the books being bestsellers he's being flown around all the time, and all his side-projects get a lot of attention/success too. I'd love it to come out asap ofc, but the 2 year spans are just unrealistic.

I would really love if Games Workshop could have the license to do A Song of Ice and Fire like they did for Lord of the Rings. The problem with LotR was that once the films were done with the popularity went bust, but there is still a good 10+ years before that happens with this series....
if only

I'd throw out there that a total of eight might be the underappreciated most certain uncertainty in the whole series, easily pushing completion into the 2020's. Moreso than R+L=J and Drogon and Arya's imminent colossal body counts even. He knew he was going to seven before four ended up being four and five and the pattern has been pretty solid that as he goes on things just end up taking longer to flush out. He even mentioned the possibility, and this is one of those things that snowballs towards being a reality such that any mumblings about it are generally kept quiet if there is a will to avoid it.
The show's longevity seems vulnerable. It seems likely, about the only way to do it even, that 4+5 will be mixed together to not cut out main actors for a season at a time and represent three seasons of content. Add the possibility of a third two season book and an eighth book...the show is expensive to make for ~10 seasons and has a lot of actors.
Also, there is almost no way for book seven to be out in time. Book eight would be a pipe dream.
...But wouldn't that make a reversal; the last season coming out before the last book. I for one would be one of the readers suddenly avoiding the show.

The show is going to end up sharply differentiating from the books. It will be True Bloodish before it is all said and done.

uh ok. You want to qualify that statement?

Well I think he means that the first season was so close to the books, and season two was more like 60% true to the books. They never left anything truly major out, other than the motherfucking chain, but they still were drifting much further from the book than they did in season 1. Perhaps it wont end up "sharply" different, but I wouldn't be surprised if they changed more in the next season.
Also, am I the only one who thinks that Season 3 will only be like, half of book 3? Or do you think they can fill the entire book and its contents into just 10 episodes?

They've already said that Book 3 will fall over 2 seasons....so no you're not the only one who thinks season 3 will only be half of book 3.
