Where did I say Brood > Spec? You mentioned spec as a solo laner and I'd like to see try you explain how its harder to counter his solo lane than it is to counter broods.

What a waste of 500th post.

So I get to play on someone else's account tonight for like 10 hours (won a contest). I'm mainly an SC2 player who has been playing LoL lately as well as watching a lot of streams (dota2), I have read some guides on playing some heroes and I plan on using some.

Whats the best way for me to make use of my time tonight without just feeding the whole time? I've looked at Excalibur's posts and those have been somewhat helpful, but I'm dealing with a pretty limited set of time.

Should I focus on 1-3 Heroes and try those? Or try more until I find some I'm naturally comfortable playing? I figure it would be awesome to get 10-20 games.

I'd definitely recommend trying to find a hero you enjoy, as there's no point in playing 10 hours worth of one hero just to get better at him. Since you've played LoL you probably know what role/hero arch type you enjoy so just follow on with that.

I was talking about Spectre as a solo farmer, meaning someone to be left alone and farming to get to their items as soon as possible. Not the same thing as a solo. Or did you think that AM solos regularly too?

I'm sorry for underestimating your understanding of the game but since when does solo imply anything else other than starting on a lane alone? I am however happy that you have realised we are discussing brood's effectiveness as a solo laner and not a 'farmer left alone to farm'. Brood can do both, as mid-late game spec would be hard pressed to farm 'solo' given that brood is afk pushing one lane with 4 people pushing another one.

Solo farmer is the exact phrase I used, not solo. Two different things. You will often see a tri-lane break apart during mid game to give the carry hero free farm or for a carry hero to move into a lane with nobody in it to creep farm.

You have to assess the problem of solo pushing once the towers are down. To what ends are you pushing towards? Moving the creep waves towards the opponent is something you want to avoid unless you are actually pushing down raxes and towers. That's why you see the top solo players control where the creeps meet and never really move the creep wave towards or away from the opponent.

Also, I feel like you have never really played this game at a high level, split pushing is only good if you can generate a massive unbalance where they have to respect both lanes, which is not always the case especially with a Brood where the bulk of her pushing power needs to be built up from Spiderlings and is fairly easily stopped by 1 or 2 spells from a number of heroes.

You seem to think that a Brood pushing a lane by herself is somehow overpowering when I can tell you right now that it isn't unless your team is already ahead.

As for Brood doing both, she can't and here's why. The fact you are pushing and the fact that you need Webs is a pain and a shortcoming that can be exploited. Some people bring up the "well you can just move your Spiderlings to the jungle and farm some more", which again is fine, but still doesn't change the fact that you just shoved at least 2 creep waves to their side which in turn makes it easier for them to farm. You're heavily dependent on your BKB which makes the timing and usage very taxing on the Brood, a point I brought up already. 5 second BKB is completely worthless on her which is something she suffers from late-game.

Basically, her window of effectiveness is tied to 2 points, her team's ability to generate a significant advantage and her BKB clock, if either gets reduced, she suffers greatly for it. The top teams don't respect her at all for her other than the annoying to play against part in lane because of Web. Her ability to actually just take over the game isn't overwhelming by any stretch and one of the worst heroes if tied down map control wise. Basically, the trade-off for running her isn't all that great other than the laning phase, but again it's not burying the other team in any shape or form.

Since you called me out, I've played irc cw mid to mid high (we scrimmed v good people but didnt do more cause of uni) and iccup to b- . Brood is good because she is just hard to lane against (no not annoying, its hard to lane vs brood with a conventional hero) and will destroy your lane if you leave to gank or dont have a measure to deal with the spiders (if the brood chooses to go for them). Yes she does depend on bkb but so does almost any other carry ultra late game (ie sf).

Its so annoying to say this but:
1. spiders aren't easy to clear 1v1 (mana/dmg wise)
2. when the lane is so pushed the roam can tower dive for an easy kill.

I'm so tired of having to say the same stuff over and over, if you want to discuss this more or play it out keep it to pm.

Mid to high IRC? Good one. What exactly is a conventional hero?

Also, way to miss the point on BKB. She needs more than 5 second BKB. SF does not. Her timings on BKB are awkward as I already pointed out as she literally needs to use it every single team fight.

Spiders are easy. If they aren't you fucked up your picking and lane choice. When the lane is pushed by anyone the roamer can tower dive, hence your support should have been covering you with wards. None of these problems are exclusive to Brood.

Hard to play against, rofl. So do you guys just auto-quit against Weavers then?

I have a little question regarding the blink spell in Dota 2. In Dota 1, if you targeted further than the max blink range, you would only blink a certain distance, while you could blink further if you targeted up to the max range of the blink spells (the spell and blink dagger as well). Is it still present in DotA 2? I know this isn't there in HoN, so I don't know if this was a limitation of the WC3 engine or an intended restriction.

Yes it is still present, with AM and QoP and whoever else.

It is an intended restriction to require a bit more skill, but I always over target anyways

Yes, the precise amount is 80% of the max. You end up only going 960 instead of 1200 if you overtarget with dagger.
I liked Dota before it was Mainstream.

Is it the same for Riki's blink strike as well?

It can't be the same for Riki's blink strike because you are going to the target you blinked. You either are in range to blink them or you are not.

Unless you are somehow wording it in a way I don't currently understand.

Another related question I guess is are all the double click item activations the same? Like if you double click dagger it'll blink you towards home/what you're facing. Or double tap tp takes you back home immediately. How's the range on double click blink?

I really like how valve+icefrog are approaching the gameplay aka keeping it as close as possible while making minimal sacrifices like better last hit animations.

I thought you can blink away with blink strike, or at least I think I just saw Mania's stream where he blinked away from after killing someone.

I gotta try out that double clicking blink to go home or where you're facing, I've actually never done that yet.

Double clicking TP hotkey does send you to fountain I know that one.

Double click dagger will do "Blink towards where you last picked the dagger item", not BASE/HOME
unsa0n?

Blink strike can be cast on allied units, but it has to be cast on a unit. You can't just blink strike the ground. So therefore it would just be blinking or not, not a matter of maximum possible range.

Also yes you can manually choose what direction the double tap takes you which in most cases is base or where you're facing.

Is Huskar used to counter to AM in dota 1? He seems like he would fit well.

He's mana independent/low intel gain
Has an ult that deals % damage which probably goes through mana shield (does it?)
Burning spear deals DoT that can harass even the most illusive heroes

No he's not. Doesn't really make any sense. Life break is magical damage, ie is reduced by spell shield. That, and antimage will just kill the huskar. And if not, he can just blink away.

Does anyone know a site where you can find the best builds for each hero?

There are decent sites out there but the best thing to learn is that there is never a best build for every situation, and even for exact situations there's good arguments for multiple item builds.

Quick google turned up this. http://ssna.dk/dotahero/
