The dire side tried to kill him a few times but weren't really successful. Furion was mid, kept teleporting in after the battle was over and got himself killed twice -_-

I've only played LoL, are the fundamentals the same? Are Laning/Jungling different in any way?

Pudge only useful solo mid? Sounds like you've never tried a pudge venomancer lane then. It's so strong it's basically not even funny anymore.
Edit:

You don't have any kind of summoner abilities that LoL has (except for maybe the button to make all your buildings invulnerable for a few seconds) and you can, and should deny creeps that are at low health. By denying creeps you not only reduce the gold income of your opponent, he also gainst less experience. I haven't played LoL that much, but another difference is that your barracks don't respawn in dota.
About jungling: All I can say is that there are no creeps that give you buffs when killed, the only "creep" of note is Roshan (comparable to those dragons in LoL) which drops an item that allows your hero a one-time-use instant resurrect.

About two pages ago people asked almost the same question and got pointed to resources they could have found via google/TL search as well. Paying some attention might help here and there. =P
tl;dr: Both games have huge differences and similarities.

Here is a very recent one of Mousesports vs. World Elite in the qualifying playoffs for the TI2 backup team with KuroKy playing Pudge on a sidelane. I've seen several people who have played Pudge in a sidelane mostly with a pulling support (in this video, it is SingSing on Rubick to set up easy hooks) who gives most of the levels and farm to Pudge as if he was a solomid while the support relies on assists and neutral kills for levels. I'm not sure if Dendi runs Pudge solo mid every game, but you can go through some of the recent TI2 group stage matches and find out for yourself because Na'vi have picked Pudge a few times.

I am here to say something that has been bothering me for a while.
If you want to play MM games and you are new, please listen to the players in the game. If they ask you nicely to do something (if you're a support and they ask nicely for you to get wards, get the fucking wards, don't finish your phase boots on crystal maiden or whatever stupid fucking item you want to make)do it. If you ignore it, they WILL rage at you, and swear at you for doing the wrong thing.
It's not because they are bad people, it's because you are new, and people are TRYING to help you. By ignoring them, you are simply stating that you don't give a shit, or that you know better(even though you obviously don't).
If they come off the bat and start calling you bad/noob/etc then you have the right to be upset, but if they GENUINELY try to help you, then you are at fault.

I've got around 270-280 hours into Dota 2 right now, but my main and biggest problem is that sometimes I stay in my lane more than enough and don't contribute to the gank phase. The issue is that with some heroes I don't really know when to leave the lane and gank. For example with heroes like QoP or Invoker it's kinda easy to feel when you need to go gank, but for example with someone like Dark Seer or Earthshaker, I sometimes get really confused and keep laning more than enough, or at least I feel like I'm wasting time in the lane. Can someone give me any tips about this? Gank with runes. Make it a habit to check runes on each 2 minute mark (even if you're not mid--it should be a team effort to control runes, not just the mid flipping a coin and hoping that he guessed right on which side the rune appears on). More often than not, the rune timing is the best time to make something happen because a) certain runes are extremely powerful for making ganks happen (haste, DD, invis), and b) leaving at some other time is extremely obvious and forcing through ganks at a time when you've just decided to randomly go missing from your lane is unlikely to turn into anything.

also tp ganks own all the time a lot of the time in pubs you're better off farming your lane and just counterganking with a tp unless you're like vs or cm or someone else that doesn't do too much with farm

What spells can Brewmaster's "Dispel Magic" clear? Or perhaps to be quicker what are the major spells that cannot be purged?

how does Gyrocopter's Homing Missile work when the targeted hero goes invis after the missiles launch?

It won't hit, as long as the target hero is invi, no stun or damage done. It will still follow the hero though, so if you have dust, be sure to use it before the missle lands or directly after you launched the missle.

IIRC it can purge off pretty much any buff (runes etc)/debuff (poisons and dots) except for BKB, Doom, and i think the mek debuff.
For anybody who has questions about if certain skills work in accordance to others (and owns a beta key), I suggest you make a lobby with a test game and test out different spells on your own using this http://dev.dota2.com/showthread.php?t=22468. There is also a youtube channel http://www.youtube.com/user/PixelLaboratories they do a lot of Q/A with spells and different scenarios. DISCLAIMER: because the mythbuster videos are tested out in DoTA 1, I can only assume that most of them carry over into DotA 2, but just in case, don't assume anything for DotA 2.

Quick question as I study stuff to get into it: when there are range values given, are they identical to War3 range values, or do they use their own metric?
|
It's the same as WC3. A tide's ulti which has around 1000 aoe covers nearly entire screen

most shapeshifting things cannot be purged offensively (Sven's ulti, Lycan's ulti, Alchemist's ulti, Undying's ulti etc)
There is probably a list somewhere...

Why do pros use the midas on the creeps that give more gold? I think it would be better to use it with the small camp creeps if they can.

midas gives bonus exp too so the general rule is to use it on the big creep until around lvl16.

Midas gives you 2,5 exp of the creep, which is much more useful in the early game. You pay like 60 gold for around 300 exp, totally worth it

Playing dota with breaks for 5 years, but still gets confusing, when different people use the terms in different ways (especially looking at some older guides), so what the general consensus is about terms "long lane" and "short lane"? Radiant bot/dire top is long?
|
It's distance from your tower in most cases. Top radi/bot dire is long
