yeah those are the main points.
if I had to be pinned down to ten heroes that will provide a strong foundation for a player I would say: Lich- ultra hard support that also has the benefit of being an amazing laner/easy to play Shadow Shaman- just a straight up amazing hero that can do many things, can initiate (on like one or two heroes), support, and push like a boss Earthshaker/sand king- pick one, both are amazing initiators with high skill caps. Queen of Pain- One of the best solo mids and is very effective all game/lots of fun. Syllabear- forces you to lrn2micro as well as being an incredibly versatile hero that can exert enormous influence on the game through his pushing/carry power. Brewmaster- Teamfighting god, also requires micro to use to greatest effect. Morphling- teaches you how to play hard carry as well as being insanely hard to kill and somewhat challenging to use effectively. windrunner- most versatile and redheaded hero in the game. Leshrac- this dudes got it all, stun, powerful pushing, and insane aoe. Lycanthrope- because sometime you just need easy wins.
This list is pulled 100% from my ass, no guarantees of effectiveness.

My own list would be something like Lanaya, Invoker, Furion, Windrunner, Sand King, Crystal Maiden, Morphling, Leshrac, Chen/Enchantress, and Dark Seer. Don't listen to anything I say though, I haven't played enough. :p

The casting for the prelims isn't "official". Essentially, it's casters choosing to cast these games of their own volition.
2GD will cast for the main event.

I think 2GD is host of the event, not caster?

He did cast at least one of the games I watched, not sure which one though, there were so many. Maybe EG vs something? He had some sound issues and it wasn't one of the cleanest casts I've seen, at least on the client, but I also wasn't exacly paying full attention because I had multiple games open.

I played DotA back in WC3 mod days, but haven't touched it since. I don't have a beta key but I played a bit on a friend's account and now I'm totally lost @.@ Where can I find intermediate-advanced strategy guides on general topics as well as hero specific?

Wait isn't this Dota 1 @.@ I mean DotA 2 lol. Unless I'm missing something.

Actually, the hero tl;dr posts on the Dota 2 subreddit are pretty good if you're looking for hero-specific mini-guides. You'll have to use the search function.

Besides the key trading thread, is there any other way to look for keys? Thanks in advance.

I've asked this before in General Discussion thread but noone seemed to care so I want to try to ask here now. I've got around 270-280 hours into Dota 2 right now, but my main and biggest problem is that sometimes I stay in my lane more than enough and don't contribute to the gank phase. The issue is that with some heroes I don't really know when to leave the lane and gank. For example with heroes like QoP or Invoker it's kinda easy to feel when you need to go gank, but for example with someone like Dark Seer or Earthshaker, I sometimes get really confused and keep laning more than enough, or at least I feel like I'm wasting time in the lane. Can someone give me any tips about this?
|
I didn't bother answering there because it depends almost exclusively on what heroes are on what lanes and which of these heroes you are playing. In some games as earthshaker you want to roam from level one in others you're better off protecting your lane mate. You need to think if you leaving the lane will benefit or hurt your team more in the long run. It comes with experience and experimentation really. Give me a list of heroes and I may give you general guidelines of how early you can be useful outside a lane. A darkseer is best at staying at one lane till he has some nice levels, maxing ion shell and some levels in surge and vacuum. You can play DS pretty much like a Brood, never leave till you,ve pushed it, just not to such an extreme extent, one tower is enough

that includes cosmetics though
cheaper alternative would be spending 5 USD on 2 ingame keys that are used to unlock item chests, then trade them for a beta key.
