the gameplay in tw3 was never any better than 'passable', the story/quests/world are what kept me coming back to that game

I've spoken more than once about how I hate Geralt and he can take his video game where he breaks both his knees and dies from an 8 foot drop and smoke it.

That said, I've started playing Sekiro again and am realizing something of a trend in... games with RPG elements... that turn me off of them.

I don't want to be Geralt. I don't want to be Sekiro. I want to be some jank-ass dude with a shovel of a jawline that decided early in his life (through the character creation screen) that he was going to use maces and fire magic and that was gonna be his life. I want the character I'm playing as to feel like I have any say in its identity, and then have that as the vessel for meeting / interacting with other interesting characters.

It feels too much like I'm playing someone else's D&D character and they're really excited about all this cool shit about their character, but I could give two fucks about it and am annoyed by their incessant reminders.

I definitely had to force myself to finish Witcher 3 after awhile because the gameplay left A LOT to be desired

I know what you mean eieio, when I was younger I would get way more excited about learning a new set of mechanics and a lot of the fun just came from coming to understand it. Roguelikes still kind of do that for me but if a game is really complex or hard than Im probably not gonna be as engaged with it anymore.

The actual gameplay of witcher 3 was always pretty bland and it hasn't gotten better since release. Hopefully 2077 is a lot more engaging :p

A dawn of war 2/company of heroes successor called "Iron Harvest" hit steam a few days ago. If anyone picked it up and is looking for some 1v1's hit me up

Don't have the game, but if you enjoy the lore and aesthetic of the game, check out the board game Scythe. It's in the same universe and it's a great board game.

Yeah I've been pretty happy to re-learn slay the spire and learn hades in the last year.

I think the difference is that for both of those games the mechanics are, like, a core part of the game (e.g. it's obvious what I need to care about / what I don't) and also at any point the set of decisions you're making is pretty constrained relative to a skill tree or w.e.

idk preferences change, its weird to get old lol

I was thinking about Dayz recently (been watching Shroud play it) and went back to the old TL thread for it. COMPLETELY forgot that Passive was the original OP of that thread lmao. Playing Dayz with TLers back then is pretty much what got me active on the site to begin with (even though I lurked for literal years).

I really thought that dayz was the beginning of a new genre of mmo, but instead it just inspired a bunch of battle royales

For sure. Games like that are a lot more consumable too.

I used to have infinite patience for JRPGs but nowadays if I try to play them I need to run them on x5 speed with cheatengine.

I remember thinking that even if dayz failed, some other, better financed studio would surely see dayz's popularity and make a decent clone. Still waiting on it tbh
