tbf battle royales is the inevitable result of dayz, the insane casualization of the genre
if you look at it like that:
dayz -> massive amounts of downtime, running around, etc. etc. , insanely intense situations due to said downtimes since u dying was so costly so it got ur blood pumping and shit
following was arma3 battle royale -> about a 1 hour experience, insanely technical with a shitton of downtime and therefore alot more intense and exciting in the action situations
-> pubg, basically a casual and fixed clone of arma3 battle royale (same creator anyways, basically playerunknown is what icefrog is to dota, pubg = dota2, arma3 = dota1, actually good analogy im surprised)
along comes fortnite, much less downtime, therefore fights arent as exciting (due to the "who cares its not so bad if u die"), alot of casual bullshit added draws very easy comparison to lol, an alright game, very little depth and very little that keeps a non 13 year old interested for more than a month (like lol)
then comes apex, which is insanely dumb, takes mechanics from a fucking pve game and puts them into a multiplayer game, removes alot of the penalties from dying, for example being able to get revived even after being completely dead, makes looting almost irrelevant, makes dying almost irrelevant, moving closer and closer to just a deathmatch on a big map.
then comes warzone and i honest to god cannot understand why people play this, its literally not even a battle royale anymore, we arrived at the inevitable straight up death match, u get revived like 237 times, looting matters not, shooting is the usual call of duty (which in itself is terrible, casual and really uninteresting to me) its basically what the idea of a battle royale of a 12 yo with adhd would look like. like the only difference between tthis and death match is that someone people enjoy winning in warzone over winning death match even tho whats the difference
-----
basically to me its the downtime, the effort u put into ur character that makes this genre exciting, dayz obviously being by far the slowest game, i still remember hearts literally pounding it was crazy.
ok this didnt have much to do with dayz but dayz always great game even tho they butchered it but the time playing arma2 dayz was insanely good, turned into a rant of how shit BR genre has become because theyre just pandering to their audience of fuicking dumbass little kids i hate this shit why am i old even i wish i would like dumb shit games and wasnt literally 100 years old

fuck i feel like i wrote an essay kill me now that was more words than my last 1000 posts on this site combined

Someone on my friends list gave dayz a very negative review with 18 hours played at time of writing and now he has 150 hours played lmao
OH WAIT ITS YOU TEDDY AHAHAHA

i stand by it i still play wc3 reforged, what u think is my opinion of that.

The best part of dayz was absolutely the sense of losing your progression at any moment. That's what gives it the tension that all it's successors are missing.
Apparently the dayz standalone has 20k players on steam stats and a decent score on the "recent review" section. Kinda make me want to give it a shot lol

Kinda make me want to give it a shot lol Shroud and Summit have been playing it on stream recently. A lot of the major issues seem to have been fixed, although they are on modded servers I think.
And yea I agree, the progression was a big rush in old dayz. Although it was also tilting because I remember my first ever super kitted character that was alive for a week dying 10 minutes after I found a DMR for the first time. Saddest day of my life.
Also Teddy you forgot about h1z1 in your essay.

solo doesn't have those issues with only a gulag fight to come back
cost not scaling up with team size is kind of an issue when its so easy to pool money together
