Bane lacks lategame utility beyond his ultimate (Nightmare becomes increasingly awkward to use as fights get bigger--it's great in ganks and small fights, but in bigger fights its hard to avoid having it interrupted by AoE damage). In laning he's hurt badly by the fact that he has only 400 attack range, and the fact that his mana costs are brutally high for the early game. The 6.73 base stats buff was pretty nice though.

Imo, he somewhat can manage Invoker in mid if he can get a quick soul ring. Invoker still has advantage over Bane because of better regeneration and greater range. Also much is decided in rune control. If Invoker is soloing a sidelane, Bane cant do anything as he is reliant on the ramps.

But wouldn't he be able to win any harass trade with brain sap and win any rune race with nightmare? But yeah I can agree about the lategame weakness. I was something like 8-1-2 with Bane early on but as the bigger fights started happening I noticed my ult and nightmare being easily interrupted. The build I went was bottle, arcane, blink and necrobook. Should I have gone for bkb instead of necro? What about agh'? possibly shadowblade instead of blink?

A bit long so spoilered ;d + Show Spoiler + I planned on playing some more invoker, but because I like Single draft, I have that also selected as gamemode. So the first game the team goes like SK/SK/pudge/and something else, I had 2 picks I didn't like + CM, so I just decided to go full support CM, since it was a long time I had played full support. So the game start off horrible, pudge couldn't land a hook even if his life depended on it, we were up against a solo BM and doing okay, only this Sand king goes aura first, pushes the lane, then the other lanes start losing and the other lanes start pushing towers. And no one even used the courier, bought it, upgraded it with the second 200 gold I got t-t So I have to go help everywhere, sand king misses some really obvious stuns, and the people on my team start speaking russian, they are losing basicly every engagement, and in the meanwhile I'm also getting tired of being the only one pushing the BM back everytime he is going for our bot towers, but in the end he does get them. Basicly one of these games where you think, why do I even bother supporting these guys, and I just hope someone leaves so I can also leave. their team was BM/razor/alchemist/lich and something else wich I can't remember But I just keep going, keep warding, keep buying dust, and then suddenly, things start going our way, they can't push in our base, we can get a few favourable engagements with leoric managing to kill some stuff, even tough his choosing of targets was really akward. More of them keep dying due to getting caught (guess lich didn't buy wards), we didn't really get picked off. slowly we keep on winning more fights, we push their t3 tower, some fighting is happening, a couple of us die, they counterpush, but they can't get our t3, 5min later we are pushing their ancient. Honestly, even tought both teams had pretty akward picks, they had 3 carry's that were farmed well (Brood had like a really early Bkb, alchemist had a heart, razor was doing really great), and we had a leoric with a armlet. No idea how we won that ;d Game after that was even more silly. SD again, I pick spirit breaker, and get a leshrac to lane with me against AM/leoric. On the first wave, with the second incoming I got first blood on the AM, with a couple of seconds later double kill on the leoric. They respawn come back, and just die again and again. I had a 4:55 vanguard or something like that, even tough my cs wasn't that great, followed by like a 25min vanguard/threads/MoM/Bkb/hyperstone. I had to doublecheck if my MMR hadn't gone down to the "low" section, these guys were just to bad for words, it's not like me and leshrac did something spectacular, they were just "dumb", the worst players I have seen in a long time, even tough I have been winning quite some more games then losing the last time.

The build I went was bottle, arcane, blink and necrobook. Should I have gone for bkb instead of necro? What about agh'? possibly shadowblade instead of blink? The problem in early game trades is mana. You'll trade once, and then not have enough mana for another Brain Sap, so at best, you'll waste an enemy's Salve, and then have to wait for mana--in the mean time you'll have trouble applying pressure with your low attack range. With regard to runes, while it's true you will get runes that you go for, the trouble is that Bane has no pushing power--which means enemy mid laners that have a much easier time clearing waves will basically always put you in a position where you have to give up 1-2 waves of creeps in order to get the rune (many of the more common mids are capable of simply AoEing the wave as it meets at x:45). Additionally, while Nightmare's CC time is very good, you need ranks in it to up the range. 500/550 range for 1st/2nd rank Nightmare is decidedly mediocre. It'll keep someone down if you get to hit them with it, but lots of heroes also have longer-range CC than you do. Bottle->Arcanes->Blink->BKB is pretty standard. BKB can be skipped in certain situations but you should use discretion with that. Necrobook is a popular option after that, but it is by no means the only option--team utility items like Force Staff or Sheepstick, or survivability items like Ghost Scepter or Shiva's are always reasonable.

On March 03 2012 19:43 Yoshi- wrote: You don't really need bootle and Arcane Soulring is enough Soul Ring is definitely not enough. Without any source of extra mana, you don't even have enough mana for a full Brain Sap->Nightmare->Ulti combo until level 10 (and after you get rank 2 ulti, you have to wait till level 13 to have enough mana for it again)--and even then you've got absolutely no mana for Blink or a second Brain Sap,. With just Soul Ring, you have to be pretty much be sitting at max mana all the time from levels 7-9 if you want to have the ability to cast a full combo. Arcanes+Bottle buffers your mana (getting +Mana early is a pretty big deal for Bane when your first 2 major items don't give you any Intelligence) and gives you much more room to work with in terms of your regen. Plus in general I think Soul Ring is a pretty shitty item. I'd only get it on carries that absolutely want Treads (Dragon Knight, Broodmother)--otherwise I think Arcanes are just a more useful item overall.
