Yeah SD without swap is really bad... One of the reason I'm sticking with AP so far(the other being I hate to be limited and get nothing in return, ie bonus gold in AR)

Soul Ring is definitely not enough. Without any source of extra mana, you don't even have enough mana for a full Brain Sap->Nightmare->Ulti combo until level 10 (and after you get rank 2 ulti, you have to wait till level 13 to have enough mana for it again)--and even then you've got absolutely no mana for Blink or a second Brain Sap,. With just Soul Ring, you have to be pretty much be sitting at max mana all the time from levels 7-9 if you want to have the ability to cast a full combo. Arcanes+Bottle buffers your mana (getting +Mana early is a pretty big deal for Bane when your first 2 major items don't give you any Intelligence) and gives you much more room to work with in terms of your regen.
Plus in general I think Soul Ring is a pretty shitty item. I'd only get it on carries that absolutely want Treads (Dragon Knight, Broodmother)--otherwise I think Arcanes are just a more useful item overall.

wait what? I'm assuming you're talking about mana, lv 4 brainsap costs 200 and soulring gives 150 iirc

I have to disagree. Botle + soulring is better than botle+arcane. All 3 of them is indeed a waste. But soulring is a life saver for bane, and you simply needs botle to have a good lane control. Phase is great, so is treads. But arcane is imo a waste of money on mana.

Except Arcane help both yourself and your team unlike soul ring or phase. So I can def see why Arcane+bottle is better if you don't have guys getting arcane on your team.
tobi may have his detractors, but he adds legit hype to all of the matches he casts and makes teamfights epic. the highlight video was one continuous tobi yellfest (with a couple of synderen/slesh oohs and aahs mixed in), which i did not mind at all.
