So upgrading the processor to phenomII would increase the ghz performance. will this effect any other aspect of my PC? Will it require more power?
Also, that video card, the XFX: Will I just be able up disconnect my current card and hook that bad boy up and wallllah? or is it less straight forward?
as for overclocking, I plan on it. I've never overclocked a PC before but I've read a bit on it and plan on reading more and testing the waters.
thanks for the help.

You will get alot more help with a pc there.

So I bought a HD4770, 500 wat power supply, and the recommended cheapo mobo in the spoilers in the first page. When I plug in my monitor to the on board video it works fine. Default bios setting is for the pcie card to overide the onboard video. When I installed the graphics card, no video feed, computer doesn't boot. Power is connected to the graphics card. Monitor was connected to video card. When I set onboard video as default, it works monitor hooked up to mobo, even when graphics card is installed. When I try installing drivers, it says it can't detect the software and or hardware. I disabled onboard video, default video graphics card, hooked the monitor to the card, no good, no feed.
HELP ME!!! >.< >.<

I've got this monitor http://www.amazon.com/HP-VS17E-17-LCD-Monitor/dp/B000EYEOC2 I have to use an adaptor to plug it into the graphics card (it came with the card). Here it says an HD monitor is required http://ati.amd.com/products/radeonhd4700/ Could my monitor not be HD?

No, it is not your monitor. I've got my 4890 hooked up to the same HP monitor right now but its the 15" version so probably even older that yours. Still a monitor issue would never cause your system to not boot. I would say its something with the motherboard. Maybe try reseating the card? Otherwise the motherboard drivers might need to be upgraded because a 4870 is a pci-e 2.0 card and that is pci-e 1.0 in that motherboard. Although this doesn't mean anything because a 2.0 card will run in that slot, so its probably a outdated driver or maybe outdated bios.
I looked your card up and these are the updates they have for it. http://www.foxconnsupport.com/download.aspx?models=en-us0000388&category=C000000001&series=en-us0000002&keywords=&sort=Drivers
I'm not a computer expert at all but I know that flashing the bios can be pretty dangerous if it goes bad you might lose your motherboard. Although it is a simple process. But first I would probably update the drivers as you probably can do that through windows. Look in your motherboard manual for the true instructions.
I hope that gets you headed in the right direction. If all fails I would go find a tech help, computer type forum and post a question there. There is plenty of them out there and people usually love to help.

I already had updated the drivers from the website. Flashing sounds inconvenient and dangerous x.x I will probably end up taking it in for service >.<

i7 860 Asus p7p55D pro G skill 2x2GB DDR3 @ 2000MHz Sapphire Radeon 4870 1GB Thermaltake PSU Coolermaster Hyper 212+ heatsink.
Pretty sure it will run SC2, the question is whether or not I can stream SC2 without lagging.

Geforce 140gt is sloooooow but other than that the components sound fine.

I'm not sure why flashing your bios is considered risky. My mobo came with a small program for that purpose. If something goes wrong, you can always reset your board. If you don't have a little connection marked "reset" or something, you can just remove the battery.
Infernal, that video card is apparently a renamed 9600 GT, so it should be good for SC2.

i7 920 - 2.66ghz 6gb DDR3 ram 512mb ATI radeon 4850 (should be upgraded?) 1tb hard drive

My bios is up to date. I'm betting my video card is faulty, but the fans on it are spinning >.<

When you say that your computer won't boot with the 4770, what do you mean? Do you hear a beep from the motherboard when starting the computer? Does it power on at all? It could be a power/connection problem.

Obviously you'll be fast enough, but if you have a 920 a 4850 just seems really out of place. Just upgrade it for completion.

I've got the recommended on the box 500 watt PSU. It takes a six pin power connector, my psu even has PCI-E labled on the 6 pin power connector. The computer turns on, green light is constantly on, but I dont hear it actually boot. Power is on, all fans are spinning including the hd 4770's. The video feed just doesn't show up at all. I think the computer doesn't boot because theres no actual boot noises and flickering red light.

Odd it doesn't even make the 1 beep for boot confirmation.

if there is no first beep (and there is a speaker attached to the mobo) then the CPU is not initializing.
Reseat the CPU and check for bent pins.

OS: Windows XP Cpu: Core 2 Duo E7600 3.06ghz Mobo: gigabyte EP45-UD3LR Memory: 3gb Graphics: PNY 9800gtx+ Hard Drives: 320gb offbrand =) PSU: 500 watt
will probably upgrade my PSU, memory, and windows 7, but is anything else necessary? Does my mobo even support i7?

Reseat the CPU and check for bent pins. It does boot whenever bios is set to only use the onboard vga. Would I still need to recheck the cpu?
