But it's gonna be of no use if it's not up to the task.

Dx11 doesn't mean that you will need at least a 5850 and huge "sheer power" ![]() The performance of the GPU is also highly related to AA filters and resolution. So as long as your not playing in 2560 ×1600 with AAx8 or a game poorly programed, the 5770 can be useful even if its sheer power isn't really higher than the 4870. edit: and please don't say "but Crysis and GTA4" because they are both optimized very poorly.

I understand what you're trying to say.but most people don't play games at such uber high resolution.if you're playing games at 1920x1080 then it's not necessary to go much higher.besides many people don't even notice a difference with AA turned on.so if you turn everything to the max with no AA at 1920x1080 then the 4890 is gonna outpace the 5770 because it's 256 bit vs 128 bit.that's why nvidia gpus outpace ati gpus.so it's better to buy a 4870 or 4890 than a 5770.besides the prices are gonna drop once the 5xxx series cards become more available.

When i write > this means superior. So > =/= ~ About the 4870, the performances are so close that i think the only reason to get a a 4870 would be its price. Except that the real cheap versions of the 4870 available are the less powerful 512mb ( The tests showing a thin advantage for the 4870 were made with the 1gb version ). Anyway if most of the new Dx11 games are poorly optimized and require a really powerful GPU, buying a 4870 or even a 4890 won't really change a lot your fps. I mean just get a 5850 or 5870 ... If a game is not playable with the 5770 i doubt it will be really smooth on a card only 5% or even 15% faster. I just wanted to say that IMO now the 4870 1Gb are least interesting than the 4870 512mb ( cheaaaaap ) , the 4890 ( power ) or the 5770 ( Dx11, lower consumption ) My two cents.

Also it is a Phenom I which is way worse than the Phenom II. Not a great deal imo. Best thing to get atm if you have not a lot of money is either a phenom II x3 or an athlon II x4 + a 4870 512mb. If you have more money a Phenom II x4 or an i5 + a 4890 / 5770 is nice. Oh and get a 5850 if you are rich enough :p

I also sequence music and make digital art with my PC. I was just aiming to spend less than 500 for a decent tower, since mine fudged the bucket. Jesus christ that computer is terrible for the price. I highly doubt you will be able to play sc2 comfortably tbh as it would probably choke on games like CSS and WC3. 1.8ghz = bad. That is such a slow CPU speed that you can expect quite a bit of lag. The graphics are horrible, a 3200 is pretty much as bad as it can get, as far as non-integrated graphics go. You should have just built it yourself or gotten some help from someone who knows how.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103649R $94.99 Open box, 15$ savings :D 4870 512mb (since you only plan on playing sc2, you should be fine. Will also play most other games. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150441 $124.99 Lifetime warranty, OVERCLOCK DAT BITCH. (819/1200 @ 65% fan speed will net you a really nice performance boost, i've experienced overclocking these things and they do it quite well. I know those exact specs because my friend runs one at that.)

Also i don't think that an Athlon II x4 + 4870 512mb would be a lot more expensive. I have no idea about the prices in the US/Canada though :O Frankly i wouldn't touch the 610 or w.e that athlon is. It has no large chace which is fine for some games really gets shit handed to it in other games. Personally a much more stable performer phenom x3 710 or 720 is a ways better for gaming, as most multi threaded games don't seem to benefit too much form a 4th core and quad core systems are only really important for 2+ card set ups and higher resolutions But amd may phase out the 710 and 720 and the black 550 they have like 4 5 cpu's all similar performance for around 100 bucks it's way to crowded

I'm fine with buying online or at a store. I have a gateway right now, I'm pretty satisfied with the price/performance overall, but it came with a lot of annoying software i don't need and can't remove and it insists on me using a stupid backup utility, I can't just install windows fresh from a disc when I want to reformat, I have to use their recovery disks. What brands are good and which ones should I avoid? Are there any good ebay sellers/stores? Would buying all the parts and hiring somebody to assemble it be an affordable option? I'm looking to spend less than $1000 on both a computer AND monitor that can go to 1920 resolution, so no more than like 700-800 or so for the computer. I'm looking to buy around late November or early-mid December once I'm done with exams and have some time to do some research and comparison shopping. Ibuypower is probably one of your best bets as they charge less for the whole assembly and shit Seems possible i was able to configure a captiable computer for about 800 which easily can drop by 100 in 2 months i5 with 5770 which is very capable, be a bit more capitalize if you weren't running at 1920x1200 but can't skimp on the cpu at that resolution esp if you plan on running rts games. Thanks a ton, this is exactly what I was looking for and the prices seem very reasonable. Has anyone else purchased a computer from these guys? Thoughts? I'm pretty sure I'll buy a computer from these guys and a monitor from somewhere else.

Ibuypower was the first one that came off my head But the under 1k rig crowd has a few more companies cyberpower pc (which i actually think is owned by ibuypower) I think AVADirect, velocity gaming, Falcon and Vigor gaming both sub 1k rigs not too sure. But basiclly your looking to run i5 750, 4 gigs of ddr3 ram at 1333 or higher, ATI's 5770 (unless nvidia decides to actually the 150 dollar range dx11 cards out by December which is unlikely), with a 500w or higher psu. Good mobo choices nearly 100% of the time by brands; Asus and Gigabtye has a wonderful rep for making solid mobos The rest is w.e you feel like throwing. 1tb hdd or w.e

I would take a few hours on it if I absolutely knew there was no chance of me breaking something or causing permanent damage or some sort of screwup like that = /. Paying an extra 50-100$ is totally worth averting that risk for me. I'm sure i could figure it out eventually, I've installed video cards, ram, and a new cd drive before. I may go with an AMD Phenom x4 processor instead of the i5 and I'll probably wait until the new NVIDIA cards come out. I'm not in the beta, so I can wait a while for those to arrive.

Why go with the Phenom x4 instead of the i5? The savings, if any, are insignificant.
