This list is why he loses the appeal
I duno it sounds like Thorton is appealing at the players union behest, because they don't want first time offenders getting a huge suspension for a first offense, which is fine from fans point of view for something like that, but not from the players unions point of view. Also Emery did something extremely similar for zero games suspension, which means he can make a strong case of inconsistency from the discipline office, so the players union really really wants him to appeal this one.
another day in the NHL another big suspension another brain injury
a few pages back Qatar labelled this "NHL thread" the "NHL Concussion and Suspension Thread".
sad thing is, every where i go, from SportsNet.CA to TSN television 1/2 the time is spent discussing concussions and suspensions. its not just this thread.
the olympics, women's and world junior hockey championships and hell even a flooded and frozen over baseball field at E.A. Crooke's Park offer great alternatives to this savagery.
hockey is still a great game, it is the NHL version of it that is the problem.
Watched the PHI-WSH game with my Caps fan roommate. We argued a while about the hit. Most of the issue is the speed he used. It's not necessarily a bad hit based on the history of the league. But players today need to understand that they are huger and faster than ever, and that hits near the boards can't happen at that speed. It's just too dangerous.
i wish someone would 'board' you out of the 'thread' jimmy
schenn turned when he realized he was about to get wrecked and that made it even worse. but wilson has no business lining him up from the goddamn blueline under any circumstances. He probably gets 5. I hope Schenn's shoulder is ok. His head looked like he got out alright wihtout smacking it particularly bad considering how violent that was. Look how his shoulder torques when he hits the boards, and then how it is drooping when he is falling down. That's a dislocation, and that shit huuuuuurts

It's crazy matt cooke isn't even on the list when he killed so many players. While Thornton has no prior history of these kind of attacks gets 15 games while cooke gets a out of jail free card for every attack he does.

If you think thornton deserves 15 games you haven't watched hockey.
the rule book is in a constant state of flux. all kinds of rules and "guidelines" get changed every year about what is suspendable and what is not along with the severity of the suspension.
another sad NHL topic right next to all the concussion and suspension talk is the ever changing "rule book" discussions.
so Tie Domi's "first offense" of 8 games in 1995 can not be compared to this current suspension to Thornton. Up until 1995 Domi was a "model citizen" who "knew the code".
One person was linking suspensions from the 70s and 80s. i guess its a "fascinating retrospective", but it has nothing to do with how Brendan Shanahan will hand out suspensions in 2013.
heck, you can even say that about 2011.
fortunately, the Olympics are just around the corner and hopefully, on the larger ice we'll get a chance to see the game at its best. As Bryan Burke has noted, the players are too big for the ice surface and its contributing to injury issues with the clogged up ice.
I'm cheering for Sweden because they have a very low "goon percentage".

Since when is kicking the feet out from under someone from behind then going down with them and punching them in the face a few times a hockey play? What the fuck would make you think that's an ok thing to do? If I did that to you on the street I get 5 years in jail for assault. That is about as unhockey a thing as their is. No respect, no honor in what Thorton did. That "code" everyone talks about doesn't help Thorton here either because that is for face to face fighting.
You do realize hockey is not MMA right?

As long as Teemu Selanne is playing I'll be cheering for Finland.
On a side note I wonder how long Thorton's suspension would be if it happened in a IIHF sanctioned game. I'm guessing somewhere between life time ban and forever ban.

i've always thought Teemu was a super cool guy and a great gentleman of the game. however, after he lost those 6 teeth i went from being a Teemu Selanne "fan", to a Teemu Selanne "mark". i am not referring to the teeth he lost in late October 2013. this was a few years ago.

Wilson is a 19 y/o kid, trying to make a name for himself by playing a very physical game.. this type of game play is ingrained in NHL culture and minor Canadian hockey. NHL has been farming Canada for goons for decades, fortunately that source of violent savages is drying up. Less and less Canadians are playing hockey every year.
