Surprised Brood War is below some completely random games and even WC3, what kind of chart is that exactly.
And yes it's truely shocking and unexpected that SC2 didn't replace their national sport, now go look at the rest of the world.

GOMTV is watched in over 180 countries, and MLG in 175. I'd rather SC2 to win in 174 countries and fail in 1, than win in 1 and fail in 174.

And yes it's truely shocking and unexpected that SC2 didn't replace their national sport, now go look at the rest of the world. WC3 has a lot of popular UMS (esp. in Korea). BW itself probably gets more play than WC3 but this chart can't exactly show that.
On topic: "Not as big as BW" != failure. Many fans of both games would say that SC2 doesn't meet the BW standard currently (ZvT is the only matchup that really amazes like BW, at least for me) but the community behind it is much larger. With time and careful attention (i.e expansions) the game will blossom. Look at WC3's relative success, and by the standards of ex-pro's it can't begin to compare to either starcraft.
Would be nice to see a real post with more content. This probably isn't enough to get decent discussion going.

Starcraft, with SC2, isn't about Korea anymore. It's about the whole world.
And a PC bang chart isn't exactly a good measurement for the popularity of a game that's much more restrictive registration-wise than BW.

Dota is pretty popular in malaysia however sc2 , around 1 or 2 individual playing 5v5 , seems like sc2 hasn't struck popularity as it did when broodwar was released in the year 1998 in malaysia .

That's besides the point. Even if SC2 die tomorrow, BW's glory days won't come back. The viewership that tune in to StarCraft 2 today will just move on to the mobas or the MMOs.
I am still awe struck that nearly two years in, TL is still having this conversation. BW is downsizing because of reasons other than the sequel, a decline that begun in 2005 or so that hasn't reversed its course. So stop.

And blizzard takes money from foreign tournaments, with total biscuit saying 100% advertisement revenue, while sponsoring gsl prize money... will you guys try to protest them too? They're adamant in trying to promote SC2 in Korea, I'd say. Does it mean that BW's once multi billion dollar industry still ecplises in revenues those 180 countries SCII is able to reach out to currently? Who knows...

The gomtv.net (the foreigner/English/Tastosis) VODs receive 60000 to 160000 views on the average. You can infer how much ticket sales that comes up to, fairly easily, from there.

SC2 has a much smaller casual player group compared to other games. I'm not surprised the ranking worked out to be that way. Also, b.net 2.0 custom game menu fails hard. If they fix it by HotS we could see a significant increase in sc2 players, although probably not in the 1v1 department.
|
Wonder if Mods will use this as Jailbait and start banning everyone that posts in it after a certain date and time... It has happened before lol.

Pretty silly post and point made in the OP. SC2 is doing just fine, so is SC:BW. That chart is completely irrelevant since in order to play SC2, you actually have to had purchased the game to have your own account, so that's why it isn't so popular in the Korean PC Bangs. Those that will point that it's the same case with Aion or WoW so wrong, since a lot of the internet cafes in my country do have those games as well, but they're usually connected to private servers. That ain't the case with SC:BW and WC3. So ... What was your point again ? SC2 not doing well in Korean PC Bangs ? I could've told you that without even setting foot in Korea. But in general - SC2 is doing quite good. Else we wouldn't have had the Korean ladder being so hard and levels above the other regions. As well as all the Korean pros kicking butts left and right in international tournaments. Seriously OP, you're such a downer. If a game isn't making it into a chart, that doesn't means it's not doing good. Specially a chart like that, where you can look at the rest of the competition and be like "Huh ?! Whatever !".
|
Who cares about Korea?
SC2 isn't SC1, it has become a global community and not a single nation-centric sport like BW. The non-Korean scene provides much more high quality standards and Koreans are finally forced to acknowledge that and start to integrate themselves. We don't need 'em, but they need us.
Good thing that we don't have an isolation committee like in old times. Hopefully, we will soon forget the "Korean vs. Foreigner" mentality and can move on to [team] player vs. [team] player.
I am quite glad that Star2 isn't that popular to be overregulated.

In what way has non-Korean scene provide much more high quality standards? The standards/level of play is still highest in GSL. The production time is still higher in GSL. The exposure is still highest in GSL. Korea is only tapping the foreign market because there's an opportunity to make a profit but the truth is SC2 can become self sustainable like many other games that's practically only touched in Asia.

Joke aside, we dont know how accurate the data is and what this ranking actually measured. And you should define something measureable that determines fail and success from your point of view and explain it.

then again the Jin Air OSL finals had about 3.4 mil in the chinese stream...which was later revealed as bullshit.

SCII will never diverge away from korea, no matter how unpopular it is there. Of course the level of skill is higher there even for SC2, but besides that blizzard is looking at a potential giant piece of the pie in korea. Even today BW could still potentially be a billion dollar industry (probably)... and just for perspective it 'only' cost activision 18 billion to buy blizzard in the first place.

VOD numbers, when not behind a paywall, may not necessarily mean that much in term of inferring audience size. For example, this random IEM vod has over 1m views.

Of course the paywall is a deterrent, but 700k-1 million hits is a lot more than what most people would have expected from korea.

Korea has established TV producers and shit. Of course it'll take a few years before the shift even begins.

Wc3 UMS's are worlds ahead of any other UMS, Don't know how that happened or why but my guess its a combination of acceptable graphics and a game engine that is good enough to not have retard errors (dragoons anyone?) but not so "advanced" ur battle groups naturally try to become balls no matter what u do.

That's a really shitty point to have, how many BW players are actually good? In comparison, how many never accomplished anything? The vast majority, no? Btw you can only answer these questions in relation to the first year of BW, where games were incomparably shittier than the first year of SC2.

you can't compare a game that's been out for like 13 years to a game thats 1½ years old. Also, sc2 is international, and im pretty fucking sure it has a larger audience overall.
edit: bw is still great though

WC3 is so fr up the charts for that stupid Naruto mod they play...like seriously I walked into a PC room once and 20 computers were playing the same game -.-
However I did start to see more people play SC2 before I came back! SC1 is so popular because for kids they don't need ID cards to make accounts so that makes it easier....also Koreans in general think that SC2 is too hard and they don't want to play it...however when they play a little bit they enjoy it
|
Someone should put up a poll and keep a score in this thread of what side is in the lead argument wise between SC1 and SC2.
EDIT. what, Warcraft3 has a Naruto mod? holy shit must download and try it, sounds awesome!

It's a real shame blizzard's killed popularity in korea by restricting the game's usage in PC bangs. I am yet to see sc2 being playing in a net cafe here, the stats are hardly surprising. If you can't get enough grass roots support here then it's never going to take off in terms of mainstream sponsors the way BW did (other than blizzard) and it shows in the studio crowds.
The expansion won't change anything. I feel SC2 on free to air TV would help alot, Gom just doesn't cut it here. OGN is a must at some point if you want to reach a bigger fanbase.

^ this.
Maybe SC2 won't become the new eSport to look for in Korea but maybe it will become THE eSport to look for in way more countries in the western scene in the future. I wouldn't mind that much tbh.

We play even less SC2 in China than in Korea. That's great but contrary to what you think China isn't the whole world. He put up more precise information than you did at least. Go read the statistics of MLG and then come back.

China population is much more larger than some countries so yeah china isn't the whole world ...

The game is only 1 year geez...

To be fair to the OP as some seem to be doubting the validity of his PC Bang ranking...
I found a south korean ranking of the most searched games a few months back, and it was pretty much the same as his PC Bang list, minus WC3/SC1 etc. for obvious reasons (they aren't new games so not searched about recently) and SC2 was also absent from this list, and I believe it was ranked up to 12 spots. Just to clarify that although SC2 could potentially be doing well, it's still well out of the top 10 range in terms of popularity.

How about a fairer allocation of wealth then, stop the majority of fans paying for the minority's content? #occupyGOM Also fuck their ghetto ass stream. Do you know the Korean stream of GSL is free, completely HD, along with free VOD? Not sure if trolling...can anyone confirm this? ALSO: GSL entry are always free, in fact, they give you pizza and thundersticks. Again, can you confirm free HD vods? Where are you getting this information from exactly? The live stream is free for foreigners, but the korean version is on television which (I admit I don't know for sure) is not a free public channel. Also, foreign money pays for foreign production. You do realize GSL has a lot of sponsors that pays for shit like prize money/etc? the ones they show on TV channels like anibox are basically highlights/rebroadcasts not the actual live thing. yes the korean stream and vods are free. this is 100% true. I take it you need to use a korean proxy to view those? http://ch.gomtv.com/450/28881/464996 해당 영상은 대한민국 내에서만 시청하실 수 있습니다.

Honestly, I don't care that it hasn't "succeeded" in Korea. It has succeeded everywhere else. It's much bigger than scbw has ever been outside Korea, and that's awesome!
