The 70's version was a classic though, I don't think remakes should be made when they cannot surpass the original. Same advice for the planned King Kong remake and the new Pride and Prejudice movie with Keira Knightley

Hah. I always thought such elements were funny rather than scary. I really did't consider Miss Trunchbull flinging schoolkids by the hair to be very horrifying, it was just too bizarre. The Matilda movie wasn't very scary either. On the other hand there were 2 scenes in Wonka's Factory that were scary when I was a kid. One was when Wonka and the kids were passing through that dark tunnel and Wonka's face got distorted by the lights like some nightmarish dream. The other creepy thing was at the end of the movie when Charlie went to return the everlasting gum, and everything in Wonka's room was broken in half. It was surreal.

his descriptions of them are definitely grotesque and his intention is being scary (although scary in a good kinda funny way, not nightmare-inducing, no. ) perhaps gene wilder made it creepier than it was originally supposed to be; but roald dahl was definitely not afraid of adding grotesque elements even though his main target audience were children. (well, with the books mentioned so far and some others. )
