I have never understood why soooooo many people are afraid to play 1v1. I mean what is the worst that can happen? You lose a game.. BIG FKIN DEAL!!!!
I am not here to brag. Im just a lowly gold player.
Starcraft 2 is a GAME. People play for FUN.... Majority of the people are not going to become pro's and make a living of sc2. So why all the fear of playing 1v1??
I just want a opinion from someone who does not play 1's and their reasoning behind it.
If people only enjoy 2's, 3's, 4's then all power to them. But i know for a fact that there are people who want to play 1's but do not beacause of some sort of fear of being on their own in the game.
Losing a 1vs1 means you personally have failed. There's no teammate to blame or share the defeat with, there's no enemy team that may have the superior combo. Just you and your deserved loss.
For many people, especially those that have a certain competitive drive but are sore losers (like myself), this utterly kills the fun of playing 1vs1. I simply don't enjoy it (but I have a blast in team games).
Because they can't blame their defeat on their partners.
Everyone that I know that says "I don't want to play 1v1, it's boring lol" plays 2v2 etc and always blames the defeat on the other player - there's almost no exception.
If you play 1v1 and you lose you have to blame yourself (some people try to say "this is op" but still they could've just played another race and if they still lose they face the truth.)
When I don't play 1v1 its due the stress that i dont want to partake in, I feel as if you need to be more aware and responsive in 1v1 and less in team games.
Hm I think, for me, it's because I hate making mistakes. It's not about losing the game. If the opponent was really good, I don't mind losing at all. It's just that even if I win I still get pissed off because I didn't play like I wanted to, etc. Dunno if it's like that for other people.
Well personally i mainly 1v1 as well, but a lot of my irl friends hardly ever 1v1. I think it's because in 1v1 there's no safety net for when you fuck up. That's actually quite rare in a game these days; most have either gear/items (if it's rpg-like) or a team or both.
People hate taking responsibility for their own failings, thats why there's so much balance whine in many games - it's much easier to claim the game is broken than to admit you should have made more units (or whatever)
No idea tbh , but when i was new to the game i didnt mind playing 1v1, but when i started to get better i wanted to keep my win ratio good so i got nervous to lose it i guess
No one takes team matches seriously, it's always just for fun. 1v1 however is usually competitive especially ladder matches and some people like to play for fun instead of playing to win. Also I know some friends who almost never win in 1v1 ladder even when they are in bronze leauge but can beat masters players in a team game using crazy cheeses
I don't think people are afraid of 1v1s for solely the reason of losing. Back when I was Platinum, I had lots of anxiety associated with playing. I don't know why, but it was difficult to just find a match and sit still. Maybe it was because I wasn't as confident, and was really afraid of going into it alone, with weak strategy and confidence behind it. Now that I'm a much stronger player, I don't ever fear pressing the find match button. Like you said, it's really fun just to play.
I have a lot of friends who don't play their 1v1s either. I try to ask them, and I get a lot of reasons, which I personally think are very bad ones. One of them (in Platinum, but thinks he plays at a Masters level [ which I don't think so ]) says his league is full of cheese and players who aren't serious. I've hearif you are Masters, or even Diamond material, you can easily get in with-in 20 games of a new account or an account with few games on its mmr so I really don't like this reasoning. Besides, I deal with cheese though not as often, because it is a viable strat at the higher levels as well.
Another reason I've been given is that Ranking doesn't matter, since Korea's players are better, so your Region ranking has no meaning. I still don't think that's a good reason not to play.
One of the few good reasons I think players don't play 1v1 is that they just don't have fun. They like to play with their friends. And I think that's perfectly acceptable, since everyone has different tastes. Heck, in tennis, some people hate singles and stick with doubles. And sometimes, some people hate or do not play the actual thing, such as basketball or football, but love to watch it instead. Sounds find to me.
Because in team games you have a chance that you wont get rushed, and if you do your teammates might help you. In 1v1s ladder 50% of the games are some <6 minute all ins.
That's actually really short-sighted, oneEfour. There are various reasons for which people may feel uncomfortable with playing on ladder, let it be ego, hatred towards losing or just the feeling of playing blindly. There's stress involved, some just don't like that feeling. I personally get pumped in every game so much, that I can barely control my hands afterwards, which is in fact really annoying. Playing in a team reduces that stress simply because of the support you can get, whereas in 1v1 you are all on your own.
Imo topic name is wrong..Because ppl are afraid to play 1v1 just at beggining of their play in sc2.. It takes me like 400-500 ladder games to kick this "newb' stress in the ass More you play , less stress you got in 1v1 games
There are so many threads on this. It is the fact that people hate losing in general, we all like to win. I used to be a bit tentative before going into a game because I HATE getting distracted or interrupted while I'm playing and I couldn't really predict if I was going to be hassled by anyone (busy household). I ladder mostly late at night now, once I play one game I find I can go for hours game after game though. I love 1vs1.
I feel that many players are feeling pretty exhausted during and after the matches. It is hard to keep track of evrything what´s going on in the match without having anyone to help. In a teamgame, players are able to slack off and ignore their A-game becuz of the thought: "Ah, pff, i got allies, they got me covered, no problem, i can´t f**k up"
For me it's the feeling of someone owning me, with no one to blame except myself. OP do you even play the game non-casually? I'm thinking that's the main reason for the fear-whether one is competitive or not.
IF you win .. adrenaline relaese into happy feelings... IF you Loose adrenaline relase into bad feelings..
Like day 9 said its..just chemicals..
and their you have your answer...
maybe you deal better with that but i am for my self pretty stressed out from my working day..and sometimes i want to play but on the other hand my body feels tired, my hands feel slow and i am not sure if i want bad chemicals in my body...so sometimes i just choose to watch cause i am afraid to fail...
Every time I saw a thread about ladder fear I figured it was some kid trolling, I didn't know people had "ladder fear" until i saw like 20 pages of people talking about it. Makes no sense to me either.
Its not hard, enter game, play game, if you win good job, if you lose just leave, reflect on mistakes, start new game.

yeah i agree with that. there's something about hitting the find match button alone. so i started streaming and even though im sure i don't get viewers. i know there's a possibility of someone watching me play which puts me at ease for some reason. i relax a lot more when people watch me play games lol.

Well yeah thats true, but if you're a little more observant you should understand that this is true for teamgames too.
But yeah people have mostly already answered the considered answer. People take it personally when loosing in 1vs1, and in team-games you can blame a part of the loss on the teammate, making it less personally.
This game (1v1) isn't really fun unless you put in your all imo. The slippery slope in this game is absurd and frustrating unless you try to play on point throughout the game to prevent from losing to ONE simple mistake. So I won't hit the 1v1 ladder find match button unless I am playing serious. I just cannot "relax" and have fun like other competitive games unless I am in serious mode for SC2.
I hate playing in general unless im really confident in the build(s) i'm going to be using that day.
Typically the more protoss i face the less i enjoy myself as i just can't find any reliable strategy that i can execute well, that isn't countered by standard toss play.
I think my battle micro in TvP just isn't up to scratch, and i do put effort into it, so i end up very frustrated when i watch the rep and the P literally a moved and rolled me over 0_o.
Maintaining the short production cycles of 4 buildings whilst stutter stepping, and trying to target fire with vikings is just damn hard, and it's my micro that suffers the most from it.
In general i enjoy 1v1 though.
If anyone reads this and takes pity on me, and wants to talk me through some good micro techniques vs toss i'd appreciate it

Where do you get the idea that everyone plays games for fun? It's probably one of the most wrong and inaccurate statements ever said in the realm of online games. Many people play sports for reasons other than fun, and it's the same with games and SC2 (this doesnt mean you cant have fun while playing, but it's not what i'm going for when I hit find match). Some people have a very competitive mindset when it comes to playing a game against another person, or even with themselves, whether it be in basketball or SC2. Some people who are less comfortable with their own abilities usually have trouble hitting the find-game button. For other players who feel the competition is too steep, they choose to "enjoy" teamgames. Some people dont want to improve, and may choose to play team games or avoid 1v1's. It's all something personal, different strokes for different folks. Personality has everything to do with it.
