this is a bit weirfd but i read a post about ArtofTerran using bats vs swarms ive seen this in many vods and replays too but i've never tried it myself i dun think
how does this exactly work? do the firebats only take damage from melee units inside the swarm? so basically if there are lurks inside, the lurks cant damage the firebats while the bats can kill off thelurks?
is this a common and very-viable coutner to swarm?
cuz i usually just vessel and kill of the defilers and lurks w/ irridiate

Umm, lurks still hit in dark swarm. I'm assuming that he used firebats because they do splash damage, which still hits in swarm.

works okay vs a few lone lurks, but not advisable against a big lurk/ling army

Yea that's exactly how it works. Only Zerglings can hit Firebats in Swarm so Terran runs over Zerg under the Swarm. Try it out!

Only versus a few lurkers...he used this vs july, whos is known for using very little units and sending all his crap in an over-aggressive do or die manuvers. I remember, since artofterran didn't have enough time to make enough tanks or vessels to counter it, he found the shortest time solution and made a quick 12-14 firebats to kill off 5-6 lurkers and 24 zerglings. Requires strong execution/timg and the splash does the most damage when the lurkers are cluttered up in a single hole. TO pull if off, just gotta be fast or your gonna end up losing a shitload of firebats ;P

Are u being sarcastic or r u dumb? lurks can still hit under swarm so bats are not gunna be very good against a big army.

Basically, under swarm your options are limited and Bats > ling and do nicely vs hydra's and low numbers of lurkers. Anything else and it's gg. Best bet versus swarm is 2 port vessel and mass irridiate the defilers before they get to your base, imo.

Bats do full damage under swarm. Not just splash. Lurkers do full damage under swarm. Just wanted to set this straight.

I have seen gosus massing bats and getting vultures with mines when they see swarm but meh, takes too much speed and micro i guess.

Yeah gosus do it but "in real game" that's just work a bit : if zerg has a too big army and many defiler this meant early u were gonna to lose. And u need to have upgraded firebats.

Uh I'v won plenty of late tvz games vs lurkers in swarm with bats.

since u already need science vessel for detection of lurker ... wouldn't
irradiate defiler + stimmed & shielded firebats be more effective?

Heh... stimmed firebats would'vebeen awesome w/ defensive matrix eh? But man you need to matrix all 14 bats that's really intensive micro considering his army gonna rape urs in like 3 seconds :p
I think it's bad idea, all those gas could've used to make vessels and minerals for some mines, works better normally.

Its basically useful when the T is doing well(With upgrade advantage and has a very solid econ) and the Z is using defiler as an all-in timing strat vs low amounts of vessels...
Or if the T is absolutely crushing the Zerg you can kinda do it to stop the Z from saving an expo with like 2 lurkers under swarm or something.
By all means it is not awesome or something that you should use in an average game. Vultures+Mines are much better as a counter to lurk/ling/defiler imo.

Well, SCVs still hit under swarm, so I advise defensive matrix (cuz you already have vessel) and hit with SCVs. If it gets rough, you can still use the medics until SCV cloaking is done upgrading.
