It also helps when Toss likes to proxy gateways and stuff in your base... the cheese never ends

(probe disappears on the minimap within your base and never comes back out is always good times)

Or the shuttle with the high templar that just sniped all your worker units

Need them A.D.D. skills!!

Put a piece of paper covering your entire screen, except for the portion the mini map is on. Play 50 games like this and you'll eventually learn to use the mini map. This is how I learned. Go hard or go home.

erm you shouldn't have to "force" yourself to look at it.
Its not like minimap doesnt help you but you should look at it anyway.

Just sit down and think about the minimap and why it is great to have.
What advantages it brings and how you could improve using the minimap.
(incomping dropships, oppo units in general)(Maybe also use Shift+Tab)

Once you realise that the minimap can really help you, you will look at it yourself.

Yes there are many techniques and more , there are many valuable techniques that let you rapidly make improvement, one that is a lot faster than standard and common one.

Propably noone here will tell you about them . You discover them. Take all your life experience, all the skill and knowledge and combination of thereof that u already have ( and that u can gain by asking others ) - and use them to create this techniques if that is your concious decision.

Example ?

What do u think would help you develop the technique ? Maybe something u know about beliefs ?

If u will convince yourself, be it by words , images or anything you will come up with , that u will focus all your attention that is necesarry on the minimap - you will be able to sustain this focus on minimap a lot better through game - thus you will be able to learn it a lot faster.

That is 1 technique, some people use it without even realizing - it is just to use your focus to summon all your motivation , energy and skill into achieving the goal u want. It is really efficient, so many fail to do this , they go about stuff unconciously and miss so much vital things.

Another would be to create a habit - a habit of telling urself to look at the minimap - tell yourself to look at the minimap constantly, all the time - and focus out of it only when necessary - when u need to move drones / micro mutas / cast storm etc

These are just examples and to be sure - they aren`t examples of a complete technique. The ones which are close to being completed can sky-rocket your skill in a time shorter than u could imagine was ever possible and I`m a living example of that. Still as u create them u learn more about doing so. It will also benefit in any other area of your life that u will choose if u ll be able to see the connections.

Seems airy-fairy ? Might be. Ignoring something because it seems airy-fairy , without giving it a fair trial ? Imo a bad idea and a sign of narrow-mindness. Your choice , gl : )

Do you use the shift tab to make your enemy red?

It helps me when I see bright ass red blips coming towards me at certain spots of the minimap. (shuttles/dropships/muta harass).

You're like the 10th person I hear that says this :'(

I'm red/green color blind so it doesn't help me very much T.T

That's one of the most unfortunate things that could ever befall someone who plays :/

(Mental note: go reavers every game).

What about that blind guy that played against Boxer?

I dont think he was blind, just disabled in some form, but Im not really sure, just cant fathom someone playing SC blind.

This happens to me quite often and it is why I already got used to checking the diplomacy right after I split my workers. If he happens to be that weird red/green/brown/purple/blue shade I will just shift + tab and know that I'm the lighter-colored dude.
It is impossible for me to watch replays in which the two players play the same race and happen to be that color you guys call red/green/brown, same thing with blue/purple.

ah that sucks man.....
But you can also use shift-tab for replays. Remember that. If you can play like that you can also watch replays like that

I know I shouldn't be laughing, but I could imagine a color blind person thinking they're winning and accidentally killing their own units. I've almost done that before and I'm not even color blind >,<

The minimap must be extra horrible for color blindness. I've always found some colors to be way harder to see than others, but that takes the cake. Also, on some monitors you have to make SC look really ugly in order to get the display bright enough to be able to see the minimap clearly. The minimap needs its own contrast setting and some kind of color-blindness options.

edit: maybe iccup launcher could add this

You can add a part to your routine for micro and macro to actually physically turn your head, not just your eyes, down towards the minimap. Like count to 5 then check the map. As for the minimap itself, pressing the tab key to remove the terrain can make it easier to see enemy movement.

You're right about the turning your head idea that does help but I wouldn't suggest doing it for 5 seconds or tabing your mini map... You lose sight of everything except units and buildings, thats not really that helpful. Also try using shift tab so you are teal and other person is red, will make you focus more on the colors.

Nevermind about shift tabing lol,

How the hell did a blind person play anything on a computer?

This is what some pro gamers do, yes, but at a low level it isn't significant enough to count.

We recently had a big discussion on this for the Starcraft 2. The idea was to bring the resource counter near the mini-map so you could check all your strategic info at once.
