There's a thread over at WCReplays.com about someone making a list of the "top 25 warcraft and starcraft games of all time", and I figured hey, why not try to put a list of the top SC games together.
I haven't watched SC nearly as closely as I used to in the last two years, but I'm sure most of you here have..
So, in the same format as the "best of 08" thread, I'll start working on a list (note; the spoilers are mostly empty so far, don't bother clicking on them scroll down to see some of the games I'm considering, and post your own suggestions).
What I've actually put in so far (I consider these clear top 5 games): Boxer vs Joyo on Paradox 2 from Mycube OSL Boxer vs Garimto on Neo Forbidden Zone from Panasonic OSL Boxer vs Iloveoov on Neo Requiem from EVER 2004 OSL Nal_rA vs Savior on Sin Peaks of Baek Du from the 2nd Pringles MSL Bisu vs Stork GOMTV S2 MSL Finals - Game 5 - Loki
Yellow vs Xellos Olympus Finals - particularly the games on Bifrost and guillotine, if my memory is correct. Long time since I saw them, but I remember them being amazing.
- Nada vs Savior - Superfight III - Game 2 - Arkanoid, Truly epic TvZ from what I can recall.
Iris vs Savior Also epic, pretty sure it's a top 5 game but not gonna put it in just yet.
Iris vs GGPlay I don't remember the GGPlay vs Iris series well, but if I'm not mistaken game 5 was fairly good.
The Coca-Cola OSL Boxer vs Yellow final might have a game or two to contribute to this, but I need to rewatch them. The CC migration -> proxy rax TvZ between boxer and yellow might be considered as well.
I'm sure I've forgotten about a ton of games here but I just wanted to get things rolling. If there's already a thread like this.. well, I couldn't find it with search so please forgive me
Grrr vs Zerglee should be considered, however I don't know if we can find a vod of this since it's from a prelim. It was broadcasted in a "best of the prelims" type show on MBC, and there's a replay of the game in our replay section (1.10) if you search for Grrr.
Nada vs Gorush from YTGK had some good games, I liked the one on raid assault 2 (I think it's from there). Dunno if top 5 tho.
PvP: Game five of Bisu vs Stork MSL finals. Game five is always really tense and both players were really close until the very end when Bisu had a clutch stasis. Also Bisu bonks his head on the way out of the booth.
Bisu vs. Savior Ever OSL game 2 on Katrina, that was insane
Jaedong vs. Flash (several of these, my personal favorite was the game on Loki II) Jaedong vs. Kal @ Loki II ForGG vs. Kal Game 1 on Colosseum (where kal wins with scouts) Mind vs. BackHo @ Blue storm lol
On October 25 2008 04:59 coulthard[pR] wrote: Kingdom vs Reach is easily the best PvP,it should be #1 on your list and NalRa vs Gorush the 1 hour proleague match come on
As you can see, I've already mentioned the nal_ra vs gorush game, I just need a good youtube vod for it
It's one of my favorite games of all time.

Yeah, I'm just gonna go ahead and add that game, it really is quite sick :D I was hesitant to put it in immediately because there have been so many really good TvZs, but it's really amazing.
TvT with Boxer and Nada (back in 2004-05 I think? This was when chatting was allowed between players)
The game was a total stalemate (almost all mined out), Nada makes nukes, Boxer scans ontop of nuke, Nada moves ghost under flying barrack and boxer writes Boxer: lol you must think I'm an idiot to think I can't see that Nada just starts cracking up after that. Game extends to Battlecruisers vs Wraiths, Nada wins with wraiths and sends Massive Medic/Marine. Boxer doesn't understand why Nada has money and accepts defeat.

I considered the Reach vs Yellow game on Mercury but I'm not sure if yellow played that great. I mean sure, reach beat a zerg on a super super super imbalanced map and he did it awesomely.. Ah well, maybe.
Jaedong vs Flash on Loki II was really good, defiantly Yellow vs GGplay for ZvZ...maybe Yanrc vs Jaedong also (I'm not too sure if it's top 5 material, but it's easily the most memorable ZvZ I've seen this year).
sAviOr vs Iris on Araknoid is, to me, the best game of all time and definitely top TvZ/ZvT.
Jaedong vs Flash on Loki II could be one of the most mechanically perfect and blood-and-guts ZvT ever.
Definitely a BoxeR vs YellOw game in there -- maybe the bunker/scv rush because its so iconic but preferably one of their longer ones.
Jaedong vs Bisu on Blue Storm was an absolute god of a ZvP, and there is definitely a top 5 game somewhere in the Jaedong vs Kal series (i would nominate the Loki II game, but the Katrina game was near equally epic).
*edit*
REACH VS SEA ON HITCHIKER is definitely top TvP. God I can still picture the buckets of sweat pouring off of Sea.
*edit again*
The most epic ZvZ is YellOw vs GGPlay on 815 ! There is no arguing this
Since I don't see many ZvZs on there, the recent Jaedong vs Arnc in PL this season was a very good game...kind of an upset, but was definitely a good game.
Also, the one ZvZ at last season's GSL...I can't remember the names of the players, but it was on Andromeda...it went into late-game three gas hive tech for both players, and we got to see mass, mass mutas with defiler plague and queen ensnare, iirc. That was an epic, epic ZvZ.
IMHO, Bisu vs Jaedong MSL S4 Ro32 G1 was better than Savior vs NalRa Pringles MSL Semifinal G1 It was close and there was literally no break in the action.
the best pvt game ever played was semis of osl (forget which one) with iloveoov vs reach on mercury. they played on mercury twice in that series but the one which was the best had oov playing the best tvp anyone had ever seen and reach fighting back (and winning) without any harass or cheese whatsoever.
Bisu versus Savior, game 2 OSL on Katrina. Hope it hasn't been mentioned already.
The other two have definitely been mentioned but I don't remember it being mentioned. Boxer versus Anytime, game 4 @ RoV and Boxer versus Pusan, game 3 @ RoV.
The problem is that for the top 25 best games ever, not only do you have to weigh its game play merits but you also have to weight for the drama and history surrounding it. For instance, Reach versus Sea on HH is a spectacular game but it's just a OSC challenge game. These isn't that much story behind it.

Haha I don't know if it's the best, I don't watch TvT much but I'd be surprised if that game (due largely to the circumstances, but still) isn't in the top 5 at least
They are in no particular order, so far.

The boxer vs anytime series had RoV twice and went to 5 games, so it must have been game 5? But as far as I remember, boxer got rolled that game.. What was special about it that I'm forgetting?
Personally Iloveoov vs Darkelf on Monty Hall is one of the best TvT games I have ever seen. I won't spoil for the people who have not seen it yet (and I am sadly sure there are many of you). Enjoy~

Completely irrelevant for the purposes of this list.

I strongly disagree, wtf.
Ra vs Savior ended with rA having 3 pylons left and savior having 0 buildings.. I'm not even sure jaedong vs bisu on blue storm is a top 5 game...... (obviously what I think isn't the be all end all but I don't think the game was that good).
IE you can take literally ANY proleague game and say "hey, these guys are way better than the players in 2003" while it may still be the most boring snorefest of a game ever.
I'd have to negate your suggest of Goodfriend vs rA for the simple fact that it wasn't what I considered would be a "good" game, in that it was very even and back and forth all game. Nal_rA's scarabs were amazing and he just crushed goodfriends econ over and over, then recalled him with his famous move, pretty one sided.

Reach vs Sea on Hitchhiker
I did not watch Reach vs Oov on Mercury. But Reach vs Sea on hitchiker was one of the best games I have seen in my life, they should really bring hitchiker back, super imba map but made great great games. Mantoss and Bisu bring lots of good games.
For another pvt, I would say the game of Bisu vs. Hwasin GOMTV S3 on Zodiac. It was a great series as well but this game especially. Plus there was the drama who could forget that?
Dunno if it's just me, but i feel many people are focussing to much on recent games instead of looking at some of the classics.
Anyway here are my pice:
For TvT
Boxer vs Iloveoov on Reqium is simply amazing, and deserves its spot on the list
Boxer vs Iloveoov on RoV from Shinhan 2005 OSL i think it was. Long game with loads of action, and two amazing battles to finish it off with.
Nada vs Yooi, can't remember the map, but the game where Yooi has the entire map and Nada is under constant attack
Dunno if this one is good enough to be on, but the deciding battle is amazing:
Nada vs Dongrae on Arkanoid. MAAASSSS BC battle
And this last one it just my personal bias towards this game as it was amazing to watch live
Nada vs Casy at Reverse Temple from Shinhan 3 OSL. Casy is down two games is fighting with everything he has to stay in the tournemant, really tense game
For TvP
My favourites are pretty much mentioned Reach vs Oov on Mercury game 1 (Game 5 is really good as well) Boxer vs Joyo on Paradoxxx Reach vs Sea on Hitchhiker Boxer vs Pusan game 3 (Not sure if it is top 5 of all time quality, but it's still amazing)
Oh and Rainbow vs Cloud with the MC is hillarious to watch For TvZ
Again most are mentioned:
Nada vs Gorush on Luna from YATGK MSL final, second best TvZ of all time imo
Iris vs Savior on Neo Arkanoid obviously
Nada vs Gorush game 3 from the IOPS OSL semifinal. Can't remember the map, but the game is first of all really tense, and it has some amazing and close battles in it.
July vs Goodfriend game 5 on Forte from Ever 2005 OSL
Iris vs GGPlay on Python game 5 from Daum OSL, Defilers:D
For PvZ
I feel im am repeating myself when saying they are already mentioned -.-
Ra vs Savior on Neo Peaks of Baekdu from Pringles 2 MSL
Gorush vs Stork on Neo Requim from Sky Proleague 2005 finals SKT vs Khan
Ra vs Gorush on Forte from proleague
Reach vs Chojja on RH from some MSL i can't remember, but it was game 4 of the series
Dont feel like repeating what others have been saying anymore, but other good games are, as the best games imo in PvP and ZvZ have been mentioned.
But that's more or less the best games in my opinion, in the different match ups

Of course it is.

See. That's your problem. It's like football analysts claiming a game wasn't any good because there weren't enough mistakes made so the game was boring. And it's probably true. But that doesn't mean it was a bad game. It just means it was a very good one and thus not very entertaining for some.
Best game is highest level. That's what the word means. Now I don't want to quote a dictionary. But that's just it.
This creates a lot of confusion and a lot of silly debate.

Every single person in this thread except for you clearly gets this, so stop trolling.
It's like saying "best movie" -_-
If you want to go ahead and make a "best games" thread using your definition go right ahead, and have fun trying to objectively judge the skill level differences between all the millions of games.
What the fuck happened to all the good sportsmanship that is showed in these games? For example, Savior vs Iris on Arkanoid....After Savior finally wins the gane, he goes over to Iris and pats him on the back. See the difference between the truely great players, and the flashy pieces of shit that just play like drones and think they are cool with there immature antics.
Nada vs Yooi, can't remember the map, but the game where Yooi has the entire map and Nada is under constant attack
Sin Gaema Gowon
When I first watched the game through Nada's FPV, I was literally in shock in how he won. The VOD is up on YouTube on nevake's account (search nada vs yooi)

Wasn't this the one where Boxer got recalled and Anytime's units got destroyed by mines and Anytime finished it up with carriers. Maybe confusing battles from both games and I'm just blowing it out of proportion.

That's actually a great choice for the best TvT. I'll spoil it for everyone because it's been like a year now. It was Oov's last great game before he retired, much in the same way that that Savior's ace match ZvZ in proleague playoffs was a great game before he got eliminated from both leagues.
A very old game but for all those old schoolers out there, this is nothing short of epic, possibly hot-forever's best game.
Far from the mechanical perfection of today's standards, the strategic and inventive micro both players utilized were an element far ahead of its time.

Stork vs Gorush proleague finals 2006 was pretty flashy back then, but maybe not good enough for top 5.
From the GGPlay vs Iris finals i would say that the most exciting game was game 3, were it turned from a stomp to a huge comeback. Game 5 was incredible too (god the fight for that 3rd gas) but mostly because it was the 5th game.
And most memorable games have already been mentioned.
I think it was game 4 actually? Game 5 I seem to recall was a 5 minute 2 gate zealot rush on requiem, so it's no wonder you'd remember game 4 as the last one haha
Savior beating Stork by constantly dropping hydras and lurkers in his main. morphing wounded hydras, picking up wounded...you get the picture. i'm afraid i can't describe that game any better, and the actual league/season/round eludes me.

Gom 2 ro16 on desperado, idk this game was ok, but it doesnt strike me as top 5 all time tho.
Personally Iloveoov vs Darkelf on Monty Hall is one of the best TvT games I have ever seen. I won't spoil for the people who have not seen it yet (and I am sadly sure there are many of you). Enjoy~

yup. rush hour was game 4. It was awesome and definitely deserves a spot IMO if no other PvZs are taking the top 5
Anybody remember the game between iloveoov and Yellow on U-Boat? That was such a sick comeback by yellow, even though he lost in a really close fight at the end. (can't find link)
so actually my question is - what makes a good game?
the drama leading up to it? great play by both players? awesome play by one player and ok play by the other? what if it's fairly one-sided but the loser puts up a good defense? epic cheeses?

All of them could make a game really sick but you know it'll be only game with cheese, which will qualify to the one of the best games ever. And the game is Boxer vs oov for sure.
I definitely agree with the two already mentioned. Honestly, TvZ is really difficult to think of games that are amazing in which the terran actually won. There are some good BoxeR vs YellOw games, but honestly the quick ones are more exciting (but less fitting for this). The Boxer vs Savior game on Monty Hall is the only one that really stands out to me.
GGPlay vs Iris game 5 is an absolute must. Just like the sAviOr vs Iris game, Iris is doing everything right to win this game, and yet somehow GGPlay steps it up a notch. GGPlay was playing out of his mind that entire OSL, actually, coming from behind like none other. Noting that...
GGPlay vs Flash game 4 on Monty Hall in the semis was amazing as well (game 5 was great, but has less stand-alone power). GGPlay is down 2-1 and facing the Monty Hall zerg graveyard. Everyone is saying he needs to use the Silver build to give himself a chance. He doesn't, and he plays one of those amazing ZvTs Where he keeps the pressure on all game, and every time there's a break Where the observer can go back to his base, he has the next level of tech already incoming. One-sided but definitely a top game.
Jaedong vs Flash on Loki II is probably the best game out of all the great games the two have played, and that says a lot.
Jaedong vs Sea on Python was not only nuts, but is a huge historic marker for the 'mutalisks as a long-term strategy' era. I was left speechless after this.
GoRush vs NaDa on Luna, YATGK MSL Finals: Both of them play so, so amazingly. I think this is the best TvZ in which both players play well, even late game. Unlike so many other TvZs that end when ultras appear, NaDa doesn't crash and burn. JD vs Flash may be more 'perfect', but this game is more entertaining. For those reasons, this is probably the number one TvZ I can think of.
Anybody remember the game between iloveoov and Yellow on U-Boat? That was such a sick comeback by yellow, even though he lost in a really close fight at the end. (can't find link)
The ending was sick but the game was.. I don't think it can make a top 5, because apart from the end it was oov walking around with like 2x yellow's supply in marines, then walking all of them into lurkers ;P
EDIT: @Post above, god damnit - I should just make TvZ top 10 games instead, there are just so many awesome TvZs >__<
Stork vs GGplay, the 1.5 hour game where literally every unit was used and every place on andromeda was mined out O_o Was pretty epic in my opinion, but then again people like different things so...
rA vs July on Monty Hall in the MSL: This is the most insane game I can remember rA ever playing, if that tells you something. He pulls a proxy gate/cannon rush into a Silver-style 'take the middle' strategy, into corsair/reaver. The corsair/reaver completely fails, but, unfazed by it all, rA somehow makes a comeback using 4 high templar (and their eventual archon selves) to take out nearly everything July has - by themselves. I think this is probably my favorite PvZ, both for the craziness and the way that rA somehow uses every unit to it's maximum zerg killing potential.
Reach vs Shark on Hitchhiker, MSL group stage: This is one people tend to forget about until they see it again. The game starts of with a lot of action as Reach almost loses immediately to a ling/hydra break. He somehow manages to hold with his first couple templar, and in typical fashion refuses to use corsair/reaver for mobility on the winding map, instead going with a manly, in-your-face ground unit strategy. This is one of those games where you keep thinking someone is going to type out, but they somehow hold. Over and over again. Great from start to finish, this game has both cool moves and large battles.
Jaedong vs Bisu on Blue Storm: Okay, a lot of people have mentioned this one. I think this breaks the standard for ZvP often being lackluster when the zerg wins. It deserves a top spot because both players really did play amazingly well. Bisu was Bisu, and Jaedong was incredible at the time but had yet to prove himself in the matchup. Not only did he go on to play lights-out ZvP from there on, he somehow manages to win this game. I still have a hard time deciphering exactly how he won it, too.
Reach vs ChoJJa on Rush Hour: I hesitate to support this game, simply because it had a lot of, ah, 'TvT moments'. You know, big armies sitting there, sometimes patrolling around but not fighting. The ending is one of the best moments in starcraft, though. Hands down.
Stork vs GoRush on Neo Requiem, 2005 SKY Proleague: I hate Stork as much as anyone, but this game was amazing. The scale of combat is almost unprecedented. Watch as corsair/carrier seems overpowered. Then devourers with queen support seem overpowered. Then maelstom seems really overpowered. The players don't just transition from unit to unit slowly, either. Stork decides he wants archons, so he morphs like 8 at a time. Possibly the best part about this game is where Stork loses a ton of carriers to GoRush's utterly stupid amount of devourers (seriously, he has so many), and then with the remaining couple leads the devourers over his cannons to maelstrom them right on top. Nuts.
As an aside, I think this matchup tends to be better on average than most (I feel the same way about TvZ though). I can think of a ton of other games that are great, but are either too one-sided or too short. Honestly, just watching any game involving rA, sAviOr, Jaedong, or Bisu is generally worth the time - whether those players won or lost.
How has RainBOw vs ClouD on Jim Raynor's Memory (the probe rush into mind control into tank push) not been mentioned yet? I mean, the game was somewhat one-sided, but I have never seen anyone use a strategy like that before or since.

I want to see this game o_o
Sorry, I lost it in a reformat about a year ago. Does anyone still have this VOD?

I have it. But im not sure if it would be ok to support a samsung fan.
FA, you should just make PvZ, TvP top ten too. There have been a lot of really, really epic PvZs with a lot of drama around them (especially in recent years) and the same is true for PvT.

Haha. I'm only a Khan fan because I liked sigamari. Since he isn't on a team any more, I just stuck with his old one
Reach vs BoxeR on Neo Forbidden Zone is also one of my all-time favorite games (Jesus christ, Reach is so amazing when he plays well). Watch out for Endless mudang storms
There has to be some great 2v2s aswell. Seriously. KTF and sigamari comes to mind
I'm not sure if it's been mentioned in one of the replies, but I didn't see it in your main post. It's just a really scrappy game and certainly the best tvz I've ever seen.
Vods aren't on youtube because they are GOMTV games but savior just played a sick ZvP vs his opponent last week.
It's on Neo Requiem, I don't know if you can embed GOM's vods though. Sorry if I didn't read the thread well enough. Just saw the title and I was reminded of that quickly.
Yea, that one Stork vs Gorush game was crazy. There had to be at least 5000 corsairs and even more devourers. That, coupled with fighting for the cannoned expo, and the unit switches made it awesome.
Hm maybe I should add another category, like "Top 5 Cheeses", for things like the boxer vs yellow game where boxer lifts off his CC to stop yellow from scouting his center rax, or boxer's tripple bunker rush, or Flash's artful extractor mine-out rush vs bisu on monty hall, or garimto vs boxer @ NFZ with the arbiter rush (which I currently have in the PvT top 5, but that might be a bit much).
There was one game on some map that forgg goes mass MNM and wins vs reavers against some P. Anyone can remember that game? I forgot the Toss he was playing though lol, Good Game for sure.
On November 19 2008 00:35 suckynoobrecord wrote: Oh, and "Boxers Comeback" - Boxer v. Pusan - the one where he has a hidden factory to lay mines in the middle and push Pusan's dragoons into them.
Hmm, I believe you are talking about Boxer vs Anytime lol game 4 2005 OSL finals.

Oh, another great game is Flash vs Stork on Hitchiker were Scouts save the day.
Meh that doesnt matter much to me, the goal is simply a nice list of great games. If top 5 becomes top 6 I wont mind too much etc. (although top 5 per matchup is ideal because it looks neat :D)
Stork v Flash on HH is great indeed, although I'll hold off adding it for now.

I think that was the game between Kal and ForGG in last season's MSL on Tiamat. ForGG's macro that game was absolutely ridiculous, and he overwhelmed Kal with pure willpower and 7 barracks. Insane game.

I think the most amazing part of that game was how he just all up out of nowhere, after Kal has reavers out, throws down a ton of barracks and starts pumping marines. Watching that live was pretty crazy, because it seemed so off the wall. Without his macro he'd have had no shot, though. He was cheating armies at a level that would make oov jealous.
@Bozali, I'll take a look at it but I've heard not so great things about that game (ie Stork taking way too long to finish the game off, neither player playing that great etc). @Ideas, thanks for the links, I've been meaning to take a look at those 2 games.
On November 20 2008 04:45 Ideas wrote: By good do you mean just memorable or a game where a very cool play happened, or just played at very high levels and/or very close game?
Just look at some of the games selected, it's a little bit of all those things. Of course, Jaedong stomping all over some guy on BNet Attack is never going to make it onto the list, regardless of how well Jaedong played.
The Nal_Ra vs sAviOr game was awesome, for a moment there I thought it was going to be one sided ownage by sAviOr but wow, wow.
Make this thread featured btw. Or make a list of top games part of the site, maybe make it possible to rate games in TLPD, though that might require some work.
Would be nice if you could get alternate links with english commenters in the toplist (even though they might be bad commentators). Then I can use this thread to showcase starcraft to my friends who are complete noobs.

There have been some terrible long PvZ's (notably Stork versus GGplay).
But there have also been some epic ones, but maybe not top 5 material. Stork versus Savior, Nal_Ra versus Gorush, Reach's game against Chojja were all pretty epic. I feel like there's another PvZ on Neo Requim that I'm missing, but I can't put a finger on it.
There have been some spetacular PvZs as well. Again, Nal_Ra versus Savior on Peaks (already added) and Bisu versus Savior on Katrina (game 2) that was posted by someone a few posts above me. I think there's a Jaedong versus either Stork or Bisu game that's pretty spectacular that should be in contention, but I don't know which game it is.

Nal_rA vs ggplay on requiem is it? or vs gorush? I think it's ggplay.
The new Savior vs TT on Neo Requiem was seriously the sweetest game with the most intense ending ever. I loved that match so much. Wow you gotta put it in here, commentators were screaming blood for that match

I really love one special match between sAviOr and Nada. It was in the Shinham OSL 3 finals on Longinus 2. It's around 30 min long and it's really awesome the whole time.
One of my favourite TvZs of all time.
Edit: How the hell did Oov win that game against DarkElf O.o
not sure if it's been mentioned, but the PvZ between Jaedong and Bisu on bluestorm was very epic and also had a huge impact on the balance of the game at the time.

Oh my god... Stork vs GGPlay was so long... 1 hours and 30 minutes if I remember correctly?
A good TvZ was oov vs july on rov, I forget which tourny it was but it was when July kept sending lings at oov and oov barely got bats out and got out some m&m for the win. Hectic game. Also, Jaedong vs Bisu on Bluestorm was a good one, I think that's when Jaedong first started becoming "good" at zvp and used the double expo 5 hatch hydra build order and smashed Bisu.
PvZ: Bisu vs Jaedong - GOM TV 4 Ro32 Game 1 - Blue Storm
TvZ: Boxer vs July - So1 Ro16 - Neo Forte Nada vs Gorush - You are the Golf King MSL Final Game 1 - Luna(fucking sick game, medic wall, mass vessel plague) iloveoov vs July - SPRIS MSL - Into the darkness
