Many including Bisu and Savior i believe use the those Logitech Mini Opticals.
Nal_Ra still uses a ball mouse.
|
you shouldnt be sorry for your english! Its great, made me laugh
About the mouse, I have no idea sorry. just regular mouses I guess, whatever suits them.
|
I can vouch for mini mice, the way you are forced to grip them makes it easier to click the buttons and the smaller stature gives you more room to work with on the desk. I used to use one for playing SC, actually the best mouse I've had (except the scroll wheel on it broke and I couldn't find a suitable replacement that didn't look like a POS at the time - its still around here somewhere...).

The mouse model: M-UV55a
Works pretty well too, especially for my size hand.

Reach used to use Microsoft Optical Wheel
He switched to an Op Mini recently (gift from fans)
As mentioned before, Nal_rA uses a Logitech ball mouse
|
lol rA is so old school, i wonder how often he cleans his mouse ball
|
i think after so many years, rA is pretty experience in handling of balls.

how cute @ the gift, big switch for a progamer though :S

Stork uses the Logitech G1, and I'm satisfied with it as well.
|
|
|
G1 doesn't look that big.
|
g1 isnt really big, i got one.i ts freaking light and awesooooome, other mice seem so weighty compared to it.
|
G1 looks like the good ol' Logitech Mx300. Had one a few years ago, but things had a strange way to get broken/destroyed when I played quake 3..
|
I'm no where close to being even great at this game but this mouse is wonderful and works..... amazingly... has on the fly dps changing etc etc
Technical Specifications

Why don't they use wireless ones?
|
Because they enjoy winning.
|
mouses that run on batteries? that you will use 15 hours a day? ignoring that the mouses just suck, it'd cost you a fortune in batteries
|

Umm okay? I don't think his intention was to make your sorry ass laugh.
What Kennigit said. Many progamers use those retail Logitech mice and Boxer at least until very recently still, like Nal_rA used a ball mouse.
|
@Sir.Kimmel
That's the mouse I use also, and it's friggin huge, but I definitely like it. I've never tried one of these minis, but my fanboyism might drive me to test run one...
I find with the big mouse when I play SC I just keep my finger tips on it, I feel I can still be pretty dextrous with it, and the accuracy is superb.
Edit: I'm pretty sure M-UV55a is an optical mouse? On Nal_rA's player page on the MagicNs site it says he uses a "Logitech Mini Wheel" I think as opposed to a Mini Optical.
Logitech Mini Wheel
Can't be bought anymore apparently, obviously since it's a ball mouse.
|
I already had bought the Logitech Mini Opticals for my laptop before even i knew what sort of mice the progamers used, now i use it to my desktop computer x)
edit: This is what ive seen bisu use btw
|
Yeah, I bought a wireless mouse, and it was a complete dissapointment.
The batteries only lasted 3 (that's right) hours before they died, even though the box claimed the battery life was a month. They must have assumed people only use computers 6 minutes a day. On top of that, it tended to spaz out about every 5 minutes. I couldn't play anything or do anything with it.
|
which is better, Laser or Optical?
|
|
|
i thought laser is more superior from a technical stand pt.
1. laser gives sharper detection (due to uniformity of the light) 2. less power consumption.
|
no love for razer's here?
i originally had the Diamondback 1600 DPI before i switched to the Copperhead 2000 DPI and i love this thing to death
=P
and yea...laser > optical for reasons stated above
EDIT: oh and to stay on topic...any pros use Razer?

Anymouse is okie as long as you feel comfortable with it. Some people think that you will have advantage if your mouse fast, but it not always true, because it will reduce your accuracy as well. I have seen one FVOD of nal_ra, and in this video he decrease window mouse pointer speed to really low.
But when you like fast mouse, then go with high DPI mouse. And if you want to know what is the difference of increasing mouse speed between switch to high DPI and increase window mouse speed (soft), then open paint, and try to draw a flower with your mouse, you will know.
I currently use Habu, and quite satisfy with it. My keyboard is G15, it also good. My last keyboard is Reclusa, and I highly NOT recommend people for it.
Reclusa feel really good at first, when you type, you dont feel like you pressing keyboard, but pressing PS2 button. But nightmare come fews day later, when I press one button, it not response, I press it again, and this time it response as twice (even more). I switch to G15 2 weeks later.

uhh laser mice suck. Optical >>>>>>>> laser
As for a reason, Laser mice have issues keeping track of your motions when youre moving quickly, which many games require.

Im having trouble understanding why laser diodes consume less power than a normal LED.
And no way does anyone need more tracking sensitivity with what lasers can provide it's overkill. Its like trying to use a Nasa equipment for a high school project to measure the force of gravity accurate to a decimal place.

I just went through the KTF magicn's site and it listed which mouse their players were using (although several of them aren't in the team anymore ): Garimto - Logitech G1 ZergBong, Hery, Yellow - KTEC-2212 Reach - Logitech Mini Optical Nal_ra - Logteich Mini Wheel Chojja, GoodFriend - tracker (?) it's inexpensive, easy to maintain/clean, doesn't have those annoying thumb grooves, perfect size, perfect weight etc.
I have a friend who bought some kind of mouse designed for gaming and I couldn't stand the way it was designed (thumb buttons, grooves etc.)

Not only that, but Razers are tacky flashy FPS pieces of crap that I'd never want to be seen using.
Long live the Logitech Genius Mini.

I use this piece of crap. It's less than 10 dollars and feels like the best mouse I've ever used in my life.
What's the big deal about mice? ...just use what's comfortable for you, that's really the only important thing. If it's a Razer, then so be it, if it's a 5 dollar piece of crap more power to you. lol
Which progamer uses Razer Diamondback anyway? edit: i admit that mouse looks like the shit tho :D

LR, thanks for quoting me and sorry to disagree with you - I use a Razer and I love it (it's that cute red one that someone linked above ) I know it isn't for the best, but I got quite big and long hands - it suits me, small mouses wouldn't. Also, it's kind of a superstition:
Spring, 2005 I was attending one of my (yet, at least) Hungarian LAN tourneys with my oldass, crappy A4tech mouse (seriously it was plastique, but SO HEAVY that many people mocked me for it - I was still very fast with it tho), but alas - I never used a mousepad with it, and the netcafé's desks, for some reason mutilated it's movement speed by 95% or so, no need to say I couldn't use it at all. Also, noone had a spare mousepad.
So, there I am, checking out the inhouse mouses (which sucked cock), when suddenly Cabala (at that point of time HUN-A leader) comes by and asks me about "Why the sad face, Naib?" I explain the situation, then he lends me his Razer Diamondback accompanied with his steelpad - "Here, now go and win this tourney for me, then remember to thank me for it in the end."
That was the first, (and last) LAN I've ever won. And almost everyone of Hungary's great names at that time was there (Kashuka and Gorky being an exception). No need to say that from the mass $$ I got as prize, my first thing was to buy my very own Razer - which I still use
|
I use the Microsoft wireless laser mouse 5000, it's nice, you pretty much just plug it in, or you can even program the two extra buttons. 4 Way tilt scroll.
I skipped completely from Ball mouse to laser, but if I was a pro gamer I'd probably go with old technology that never messes up with maintenence. My laser mouse left click occasionally sticks down... very annoying. I may have a powerful left click, but that's inexcusable, though forgiveable.
It's two generations ahead of everything else though.

Microsoft Wireless Laser Mouse 5000 is nice and large, but it's AMAZINGLY light.
My ball mouse is heavier, and it's default.

i use the logitech MX-518
its pretty good for me at its highest setting, i like the weight and shape. although don't trust by me, my hands are literally deformed(brachy dactylie of the 4th finger on both hands)
|
|
I use a razer copperhead, but it's a bit too heavy for starcraft. I think it's perfect for sensitive games that require really precise clicks over twitch clicks, like Warcraft 3 and Counterstrike (which might be why so many of them are sponsored by razer ._.) Then again, I'm pretty much talking out of my ass.
|
All the mice the programmers use are like 10 bucks mice so just pick out a small ass optical mouse that is sold in korea and a progammer maybe uses it
G9 its ugly as hell but its wide and if you have big hands like me youll like the fact its wide and short. Of course i tend to use its 7 buttons for macro settings in programs over games but its just confortable for me.
Best yet it sells in america!

This is my first time posting on these forums, mostly because i didn't find it relevant to enter pointless discussions with ppl stating things based purely on their gut feeling. However this time i feel that my knowledge about this particular topic can put some light on the MOUSE subject, and explain some things that I'm sure most of you don't know.
To understand why these Starcraft pro gamers use outdated mice, we first need to understand how mice work, and why different mice produce different movements on the screen and same sensitivity setups.
DPI this is translated as "Dots per Inch". It basically means how many dots a mouse cursor will move if the mouse is moved for one (1) inch (1 inch = 2.53 cm) on a surface (a mouse pad for example).
Sensitivity filters - the mouse signal can be amplified and changed so that the distance traversed on the screen increases or decreases (simply put you can increase or decrease the sensitivity of the mouse in windows, and thrue special mouse drivers). However if we set the sensitivity in control panel to the 5th scale (the middle) and turn off the Enhanced pointer precision (acceleration), the mouse input we get is the pure mouse movement unchanged by artificial filters.
To better understand these 2 things lets move on to examples. If for example we have a screen resolution of 800x600 and we have a Logitech mx300 mouse (800 DPI), and sensitivity filters are off, by moving the mouse for 1 inch we will move the cursor from one end of the screen to the other. If we want to achieve the same effect in a resolution of 1280x1024 (standard 19" LCD resolution) we would have to increase the sensitivity of the mouse VIA filters or increase the DPI of the mouse. A 1600 DPI mouse will cover this LCD screen in a movement that is less than 1 inch, in order for my logitech mx300 to achieve the same effect (remember he has 800 DPI), i would need to double his sensitivity in the windows sensitivity fileter (mouse setup in control panel) by moving the pointer speed from the middle to the far right (100% bonus speed increase), but lose precision in the process.
Now that we understand how DPI affects sensitivity we can conclude how this affects Starcraft and why some people say Razer mice or some other logitech hihg DPI mice are not good(this however not being true).
Starcraft uses a 640x480 screen resolution, by using an old 800 DPI mouse with sens unfiltered by windows you will get a middle to higher speed sensitivity that is very nice for use in starcraft (less than almost 1 inch of movement covers the whole screen). If we use a 2000 DPi mouse the default sensitivity will be very big and the game would be unplayable by most players unless they reduce the sens via the windows filter. However almost all mice that have over 1600 DPI also have an option to reduce the DPI to 800 or 400 so you don't have to artificially lower it via the windows filter. If u use unfiltered sensitivity, the mouse movement is more accurate and also it is 99% the same on any computer you go and plug in your mouse (very useful for LANs and Tourneys).
Lets look at higher resolutions now. If we play a game in 1280x1024, if i want to achieve the same sensitivity feel like i have in SC (640x480) i will have to almost double my sensitivity in windows (and in the process lose a lot of precision) or get a mouse with higher DPI.
Also, keep in mind, when SC2 comes out, the resolution you play in won't be 640x480, it will be higher, and if you use an outdated mouse you will most likely be unable to use the same sensitivity you used in SC.
If you read all of the above and understood it, you now know why SC progamers use outdated mice. Its basically because SC is an outdated program (technically, not the gameplay), and not because the new high end mice are no good, they just don't need them, they don't help them.
I own a logitech white pilot mouse (400 DPI), a mx 300 (800 DPI), inteli explorer 3.0 (800) DPI, logitech dual optical (iirc 800 DPI), and a Razer Copperhead (2000 DPI-adjustable to 400,800,1600 and 2000). I have played Q3, CS, and war3 on tourneys with some of them. Regarding SC, if i set Copperheads DPI to 800, the sensitivity is almost the same as on the logitech mx300, and the precision is almost the same.
When choosing a mouse, it is important to know what you will be using for, and how versatile it is. Also looks also matter. To some more, to some less, but its always nice to have a cool looking mouse. If you use Logitech G1 to play SC, you like its design, it fits your hand, the G5 (2000DPI laser) will do all that and more, in SC you just lower its DPI, and if you play something else you wont have a garbage mouse that is only excellent in SC.
There is also mouse design, most RTS players use symmetrical mice, although this is not a rule set in stone. just chose the mouse that you feel is most comfortable in your hand and fits your grip style (Palm or Finger grips).
Hope this sheds some light on the "GAMING MOUSE" subject.

I hate how people think 'oh, a progamer uses that mouse, that will make me good!'.
For god sakes, a good mouse is one that is good for you.

I feel like such an idiot. I just went out and bought a really nice mouse for sc2, only to find that boxer and nalra use a ball mouse. Haha delusions of grandeur. A mouse will not make me better at sc /-:

Nice bump haha. But I think since SC2 has a higher resolution, higher dpi might help *a bit*. Hopefully my G1 will still be good enough.

Thank you for finally explaining what nobody else has, i'd been wondering why they use those mice and i have a diamondback 3G. I was wondering if i should have gotten a G1 or something, so i should use my crappy logitech mouse. :D

It basically means how many dots a mouse cursor will move if the mouse is moved for one (1) inch (1 inch = 2.53 cm) on a surface (a mouse pad for example)
However almost all mice that have over 1600 DPI also have an option to reduce the DPI to 800 or 400 so you don't have to artificially lower it via the windows filter. shitty microsoft mouse here

I use a 3000 DPI Razer mouse on a control styled mousepad I like the ability to adjust the sensitivity in game.
