So here's something I noticed while doing a little poking around FiFo.
We all know that to "walk the royal road" is to win an MSL or OSL on your first try. Recently Mind also walked the royal road in MSL defeating 2 time defending champ Bisu in the finals... but you know what's even more impressive?
He didn't just start from MSL, nor did he start from Survivor. He started from the MSL Off-line qualis! (Albeit, not his first attempt, but still impressive).
I personally think Mind came to TL.net and read DJEtter's secret formula to winning OSL, and used it for his MSL victory.
Mind's Road to Victory:
7/19/2007 MSL Prelims Group 16 Ro8: InteR.Mind 2 - 1 MenSol[Zero] Ro4: InteR.Mind 2 - 1 Ever)P(SsuN Final: InteR.Mind 2 - 0 SharK[gm]
8/2/2007 MSL Survivor Tournament Game 1: InteR.Mind > Much Winers: Canata > Inter.Mind Final: InteR.Mind > TheZerg
9/27/2007 GomTV3 MSL Ro32 Game 2: InteR.Mind > Shine Winners: Hwasin > Inter.Mind Final: InteR.Mind > Shine
10/20/2007 GomTV3 MSL Ro16 Game 1: InteR.Mind > Oov Game 2: Oov > Inter.Mind Game 3: InteR.Mind > Oov
11/1/2007 GomTV3 MSL Ro8 Game 1: InteR.Mind > TheManiaMST Game 2: TheManiaMST > Inter.Mind Game 3: InteR.Mind > TheManiaMST Game 4: InteR.Mind > TheManiaMST
11/8/2007 GomTV MSL Ro4 Game 1: InteR.Mind > Savior Game 2: Savior > Inter.Mind Game 3: Savior > Inter.Mind Game 4: InteR.Mind > Savior Game 5: InteR.Mind > Savior
11/17/2007 GomTV MSL Final Game 1: InteR.Mind > Bisu Game 2: Bisu > Inter.Mind Game 3: Inter.Mind > Bisu Game 4: InteR.Mind > Bisu
Although I generally hated this guy for knocking out Savior, I'm a little impressed.

I thought there was no "Royal Road" for the MSL, I believe even Bisu said this when he won the first time.

Mind never won game 2 or the winners match and he still won it all.

it's funny how far he came by playing one single matchup

To be honest Mind was the last person I thought would take this MSL.
Now that he won it and I see his path I'm kinda happy for him, a lot of work that paid of. Gj mind!

Prelims Final: InteR.Mind 2 - 0 SharK[gm] That may be the only second game he won.
Hm.. FiFo says his prelim Ro4 set was Win,Loss,Win, but it doesn't say for Ro8.

I think I first noticed this when I was looking at the Quarterfinal match between Mind and Memory, both of whom had begun the event down at the offlines (and Kwanro too). It is quite an amazing run/feat.
Savior was also likely the only player that had a lead on Mind at any point in the tournament. Not counting, of course, the double elimimation group stages when mind never had more losses than wins anyway.

I always thought that Mind/Ruby would win a few starleagues, after being extremely impressed from watching their replays a couple of years ago.. These guys just always had perfect macro/micro with very high 350ish apm and they always crushed their amateur opposition in various single leagues/team leagues. I really didn't think he stood a chance against Savior or Bisu.. but good for him What's scary is that Mind played way better vs Bisu than even Hwasin did, I don't think anyone could've predicted that. When Hwasin got advantages against Bisu, he'd often let Bisu creep back in and take the games back but Mind never gave up any tiny edges whatsoever against Bisu.. truly amazing play by Mind

Taking down Much, Oov, sAviOr and Bisu in your first MSL is pretty much as good as it gets, but I still can't shake the feeling that he'll slide back to obscurity after this.

Yeah. Its like the consistency vs someone who just had a lucky/invincible run. I cant say how he will do after this but I could definitely see him just being a middling uninspiring player. He is so damn young though

wow he won everything except game 2 lol

I thought the same thing, a spoiler warning, when the spoiler is in the title, lol?

I've got the same feeling, for some reason I just can't see him winning another one :/

Yes royal road is a term only associated with the OSL. Just like the golden mouse etc.

traditionally "royal road" has been reserved for only starleague, but recently korean news sites have been using "royal road" in reference to MSL. i personally think that is inaccurate and it should only be used with regard to starleague, but whatever

Im pretty sure there is a royal road for msl. They were talking about it. They meaning the commentators about some jinx. One if bisu is really a bonjwha he would win 3 msls and than win an osl. Since he won two in a row. And a royal road jinx where a person who gets to his first msl and gets to the finals win.
|
Why doesn't MSL have a Royal Road? Anyone involved in MSL can just say one exists and it does.
|
Because "It's not about prestige or what's worth more or what's more important or harder or whatever. It's simply a definition. It's like how the golden mouse is an OSL only thing. It's just the way people define it, it's a tradition." paraphrased quote from wise man
People could do the same crap with the golden mouse if they wanted to. It's a thing to keep to OSL only. Not to mention

LOL
But yeah, taking out Savior and Bisu in fair fights right in a row. That's hard core.
We're definitely going to see a lot more of him in Proleague, so we'll be able to gauge if he's got any consistency or not..

I was under the impression that Royal Road was only for OSL as well.
|
Doesn't Royal Road mean to win both Starleagues in your first try?
|
Wasn't savior stuck in the prelims before he won osl too? Or was it just odt?

Just ODT, I think. Not 100% though.

His first ODT group was pretty ridiculous, it was Savior, Jaedong, Sea, and Casy (when Casy was still good TvZ).
Savior's road to his Shinhan3 OSL Win:
ODT W Jaedong W Casy
OSL Group L Midas W Chojja W Light
Ro16 W Midas L Midas W Midas
Ro8 W Much W Much
Ro4 L Iris W Iris W Iris L Iris W Iris
Finals W Nada L Nada W Nada W Nada

royal road is first time entry in oSL and taking it all, doesnt apply to msl...

You just made me remember how brutal the wins vs Much were...
