I did a little count of the participants of all the past 18 ASL seasons (17 ASL seasons and VANT36.5 National Starleague (Which for some reason are also called part of this big ASL tournament).
So here goes.
The players who have participated most often
Protoss
Best 16
SnOw 14
Mini 14
Terrans
Sharp 16
Mong 15
Rush 15
Zerg
Soulkey 13
herO 12
Action 11
Number of players who participated 1 time for each race:
Protoss - 8
Terrans - 13
Zerg - 14
As you can see, the easiest way for newcomers to get into the tournament was for Zerg, Terran and only then Protoss.
I wonder if there will be any new names? I wish there were.

maybe, probably not and even if they do, its not likely for them to go past Ro24 and drop out
we might never see someone like Soma again.

Speed is Sexy. he has been in two asl season. 11 and 17.
ssinz has been in 3 season not two. he was in 9, 11 and 12.
Bishop was in two, not 1. 13 and 15.
Ruin was in 3 not 2. 12 13 and 15.
Where is Miso. so thats 8 and not 7 and 1.
Killer was in 6 not 5.

nope
same old, same old.. doesn't mean it's bad in any way by the way. It's just that the qualifying system is so gruelling and unforgiving. Maybe if the tournament expanded to 32 slots then yeah. But with the same format, I don't see it happening.

There's some names I'd say are doing particularly well and stand a better chance to qualify now more than before.
Highest chance of qualifying for the first time:
BTS(Z), Motive(P), Paralyze(P) - These three players are honestly better than many who have qualified already, or have qualified multiple times.
BTS > Hyun, ZeloT, 815, MisO, GGaemo
Motive & Paralyze > nOOB, Tyson, YSC, Movie
Very low chance of qualifying:
Rich(P), Promise(P), 1127(T), Skey(T), HBQ(T), Saber(Z), Iffy(Z) Prime(T), RideSky(T), Kop(T), > Quickly(P), Blade(P) > Absolute(Z), Mayd(T),

Thanks for sharing. The numbers are generally lower than I thought. Seems that qualifying is pretty tough, even for former top level players. Presumably that makes it quite hard for the next tier down.

agree about Motive & Paralyze btw. Hopefully they will make it in to ASL 18. I still wouldn't consider them "new" though. But they've not yet managed to get into the ASL ro24 so I guess technically they would be "new names in the ASL" if qualified.

he is referring to the total number of unique players, not the total qualifications. The one issue with qualification numbers is that it does not tell the whole story. Qualifier brackets tell the other half of the story. favorable bracket? tough opponent elimimated by someone else? freak accident like with Ivory qualifying or BCM taking out Queen. Getting an almost unbeatable player on your side of the bracket? etc. Often times the lower tier players eliminate each other in groups which already reduces the odds of new players qualifying on top of there being literal gate keepers from tier 1 and 2 in all the semifinals and finals.

There is quite a number of ex-pros that peaked much higher than a good chunk of the people on that list. At least 10 have a fair chance to survive qualies with just ladder grind, and then there's dudes like Jangbi and Fantasy.
I'd really love for a top Korean clan to become dedicated as hell, and see their top 3 players enter the next ASL. The hobby approach simply won't cut it. And solo bolo just isn't the way unless you're both talented and very intelligent. Even then getting through ASL qualies you'll need luck on your side.
It's all a pipe dream. As long as ASL keeps its prestige I'll be happy to watch however many more seasons, but I'd like to see an old name like Turn, Really, Tempest, Great, Crazy-Hydra show up one of these seasons.

Just setting Internet to TR 16 l Low, or TR 4 l Extra High is the best. We will see so much new faces come to ASL.
I know some guys are so terrible at TR 24 l Low, but they play very well with lag and become the best with super lag (they can beat S players in some seconds).
