Ro16 Changes - Still Dual Tournament but with a twist, Match 1 and 2 will remain the same, Winners/Losers/Final Match will be Bo3 (Look at 2006 Pringles MSL Season 1 Ro8 for Reference)
Ro8 and Ro4 will remain Bo5
Finals Changed to Bo7
Maps* Please note that my Source for maps is the Namu Wiki page which has been a reliable source for ASL information in prior seasons. https://namu.wiki/w/아프리카TV 스타리그 시즌8
Yes, my body is ready! Great to see the best tour of modern BW return! Pretty cool to not have CB or FS in the main tourney, as well. Pretty interesting changes to the format, though I actually always loved the Bo1s. I guess this will bring more hype to the winner/looser/final matches.

like I said the map source is reliable but I don't know where they got it from so not 100% sure about the whole thing.
also I remember sonic doing something similar for SSL8-10 with the Bo3s
That format change is awesome. Really takes out some of the variance out of ASL that we've had in the past. Imagine someone going into a ZvZ Bo3 after playing a ZvP or ZvT. Bo3 gives you some room for adjustment.
I’m not digging these changes. Seeing more games is nice but having these massive map pools punishes those players that would put in the time creating a couple of strategies specifically geared to their opponent in a specific maps.

I think they're going for Bo3 to counteract the fact that games recently in tournaments have all been super fast. Hopefully the new maps give us some more macro games too.
this whole format change sounds pretty amazing and I'm all for it!
what I hate though is that Neo Sylphid is going to be played AGAIN instead of Whiteout.. god damnit, why no Whiteout? That was one of the better maps made in last couple of years, actually.. Sylphid is pretty standard and boring, tbh..

Still bummed that they ditched Whiteout, there was certainly place for that map in this big map pool.
I really like ro16 changes (in other hand I preffered tiebreaker system like in S1) although not sure if they needed to make finals bo7. If you're against FlaSh odds of winning decrease even more. Comeback potential is at maximum hardest.

what a shame
Well, they recycled blockchain (could have used Whiteout instead, but whatever) and added two far-from-standard new maps, so maybe in a rare fit of sanity in map pool design they probably figured to keep the rest floating around more standard, which whiteout is almost but not quite, so it got dropped. Or they just rolled a dice, what do I know. Excited to see Overwatch though. First foreign-made map in ASL!

Keep it nasty, brutish, and short.
if players don't want to play on certain maps, they can just simply veto them. only an issue for the ro8 onwards, if it even is an issue at all.

So would it be vetoes then a determined map order, or loser picks? And perhaps I’m just some salty old man who’s disapproved of every change since the 4th place finisher didn’t have to requalify for the OSL.
And I’m still alive and kicking, although I was a largely absent lurker for quite a bit. HOTS really took any sort of joy out of StarCraft for a minute.
Super glad of the format changes. Also super glad to ditch FS for once, though i wouldn't have minded Circuit breaker staying around as the standard map. bring on june 30th plz

I would take Whiteout over Block Chain any day.. and I think any sane person would, too.. Map pool is overall decent, but I would definitely drop both Neo Sylphid because it's just boring and Block Chain because it's just bad.

Players each ban 1 map than it's random map order. At least I think that's what it says, my Korean kinda chobo :S
Ro24: Set1&Set2: Multiverse Winners&Losers: Sylphide Decider: Ground Zero
Ro16: Set1&Set2: Tripod Winners&Losers: drawn out of mappool (minus Tripod and 1 ban for each player) Decider: drawn out of mappool (minus Tripod and 1 ban for each player)
Ro8&Ro4: drawn out of mappool (minus 1 ban for each player)

Imagine he would need time to get back to speed too if he could make it but obviously not as mentioned by GTR.
So there will be a Wildcard match between Sharp - Calm - Horang2 for EffOrt's seed since he went to the military. Mind was also supposed to be a part of this but backed out due to personal reasons.

Calm vs Sharp, cross spawns on Ground Zero. Calm opens with 2 hatch mutas with lots of zerglings, put lots of pressure on Sharp, then tech to hive for quick guardians.

This answers everybody's questions about whether Flash will be participating in this ASL or not.
When will tournament organizers learn to avoid so many PvP matches? KSL 3's snooze fest is the most recent evidence of what happens from too many protoss players.

Yeah even if it's Bisu, I can't image that he'd be able to just jump from military service straight to competing with the top bw players in the world.
He'd probably need 5 months to be truly competitive, and at least 7 months to let his hair grow out.

Are you suggesting they should rig the tournament to get the games they want? That sounds like a good idea...

wait, do u mean to tell me this ISNT run like the wwe?
Damn Calm's late-game multitasking is SO BAD now, it reminds me of myself playing haha. Was so cool seeing his game on block chain vs Sharp where he had a super cool surprise kill-move planned with that hidden 4th's nydus, but sharp saw it just in time and blocked it and then calm had to play a macro game and just shriveled up and died (similarly he got in a pretty advantageous position in game 1 vs horang2 but just blew it in the late-game). He's still got some games full of cool strategies, but if he doesn't win the game in 8 minutes or get an insurmountable lead he's going to fall apart.
Totally anecdotal but usually every day I click on Jaedong's stream in the morning and for the last month he was always streaming LoL, but the last couple days hes been streaming BW so maybe he's practicing for the qualifiers for ASL?

Does anybody know how many groups are going to be played at each qualifier? in the past there were 12 at seoul and 6 at each other city, but this time one round of 24 seed is given to + Show Spoiler +
Soma
due to his ACS win, does that mean we will have only 5 groups on monday?
Can somebody who can speak korean ask the live casting to have english names of players? Like right now im watching korean stream on afreeca for quailifiers and have no idea who is playing

Is it possible to watch stream asl on youtube or twitch? Africa terrible service. brakes constantly. and now the page with the translation of qualifications does not open at all. I'm from Russia.

I think they split the 6 groups of the RO24 in 4 tiers of different skills, so each group has 1 player of each tier. If so, do they only use their ASL points ? Or spon matches rating ? or something else perhaps? thanks
Pretty balanced groups I'd say. Now with the format change in elimination matches we might get to see some better matches on average. The Bo1 format brought some ugly cheesy games sometimes.

ro24 doesnt change as far as i understood, they keep playing bo1s only till ro16

I noticed that the player Sharp seems to have a 'shorter and wider' view area? E.g. you can see on his mini-map
do you mean the fact that not every unit / spell (e. g. if you call a mine a spell too) gives u the same 'view area'? on his mini map there were some mines in the middle and no unit around, so he only got a shorter view of this area, units usually give you a wider view area <--- hopefully i understood your question correctly

He means that Sharp's screen resolution looks he was playing in something stretched further than 16to9 which shouldn't really be possible (SCR lets you pick between 16to9 and 4:3 to my knowledge).
I'm a bit curious of the format compared to the KSL. The KSL plays bo5 for the group stages? Wonder why the ASL don't play bo3 for all matches in group stages. At least I think the bo3 for winners/losers is much better than the previous one which was bo1 for all.

hm, I thought it was because often the first matches are way more likely to be one sided than the winners/losers/final games, especially in the first round (i think they're still only doing bo1s in the ro24). I don't need to watch an full bo3 between an experienced player and a newbie, a bo1 is fine in my book. Another consideration I think is time? 5x bo3s could potentially result in 15 games, and if you had a lot of terrans in a group that could go until 1am.
bo3s/bo1s is a really good compromise in my book.
I'm also really liking the group picks too! Every group looks pretty competitive, no easy groups or groups of death.

This isn't part of the new format, as far as i know it has been used since the introduction of asl points

in recent spon matches you can just read from flash webcam facial expressions he is a bit shaken when playing vs soma like the games are sometimes very sharp and flash defense crumbles a bit under the pressure, flash talked about having fear for only a few opponents when he is playing them those being bisu/rain/effort you can probably count soma with those as well.
How did Zero not advance in the qualifiers? I thought he would be the best performing Zerg in this tournament. I am very disappointed. Zerg looks rather weak with the always underperforming Soulkey and Larva. On the other hand, Terrans have the really stronf trifecta of Sharp, Flash, and Last. It will be interesting to see if there are more Terrans or Protosses in the ro8 for this tournament. I bet more Protosses get knocked out earlier now that Flash is in it. ASL always gets better and better every season so cheers guys.

Soulkey won KSL and got into the quarters last season so I wouldn't say he underperforms. Sharp isn't that good, he is a distant third to Last.

ZerO, BeSt and Light form the strong trifecta of offline choking

if he can't beat those players in a qualifier, he absolutely does not deserve to be in the asl.
In the End of the World show match he played a close series where he lost 4-5 against Flash. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I can agree he chokes on offline games though.
Flash is a double-edged sword. On one hand, winning when he's not competing comes with an asterisk. On the other, he's so dominant it can become boring. I'd expect him to wreck everyone.
