Taru Salminen is a familiar face to Korean TV viewers
Little did she know when she left the small Finnish town of Elimäki... Taru Salminen, 31, had no idea eight years ago when she embarked on a journey to study in South Korea that she would become a celebrity there. But today strangers stop her on the streets of the capital Seoul on a daily basis. They stop her, and ask for strange things. “They want my autograph - and my mobile number”, Salminen says, simultaneously horrified and amused. She has arrived in Finland for a quick spring visit.
Salminen, who deals with immigration and economic affairs at the Finnish Embassy in Seoul, was offered a chance to appear in a discussion programme on Korean television, where - as the programme’s name "Talk with Beauties" suggests - beautiful women chat about stuff. The topics of conversation vary from serious subjects to pure hokum and entertainment. All the panellists are of foreign extraction. “At first it was aired on Sunday mornings. Once the programme gained popularity, it was moved to a prime time slot”, Salminen explains.
From the Finnish point of view, the South Korean prime time, 11 pm on Sunday night, sounds rather exotic. This alone speaks several volumes about the differences between the Finnish and the Korean culture. Here a normal working Finn starts getting putting on pyjamas right after 11pm, but in South Korea the evening is young and only just getting into gear. But there are also other differences. “In Finland it was weird to pop into the Stockmann department store in downtown Helsinki during the so-called “Crazy Days” sale. People moved so slowly”, Salminen marvels. As anyone can tell you, the Stockmann sales see Finns at their hectic elbow-waving worst, almost regardless of age or gender.
In all, Salminen has spent around four years in South Korea getting acquainted with the buzzling life style there. “At the beginning of the decade I studied at Seoul University. Two years ago I landed a job with the Finnish Embassy there.”
Salminen first immersed herself in Asian culture at the University of Helsinki some ten years ago, when she commenced her degree programme in East Asian studies. In her studies she specialised in Korea. Now this specialisation has advanced so far that Salminen has totally adopted the Korean culture. Salminen now actually finds it difficult to remember what she thought of Korea as a foreigner, when she first moved there. In the popular discussion programme Salminen’s assets have been her good knowledge of the Korean language, her genuineness, and an infectious sense of humour. “I cannot act snobbishly, I just started speaking my mind”, Salminen puts it plainly.
On the show , sixteen women at a time take part in the discussions. Only a few of them appear in each episode. To use sports terminology, Salminen is one of the first names on the team-sheet. In other words, if she’s in town she's on the air. Or more precisely, she was. The Finnish Embassy decided a couple of months ago that it is not quite appropriate for a staffer to appear in a television chat programme.
This has not prevented Salminen from being in the limelight in Korea. The mother of one of the members of the Korean boy band Super Junior announced through the media that Salminen would be a welcome daughter-in-law. There would be only one condition. Taru would have to moderate her consumption of the Korean distilled rice liquor Soju. Salminen laughs. “This impression of me dates back to my student years. The Koreans drink really often, in fact, basically every day of the week. Nowadays I hardly drink at all. As the years pile up, you no longer recover from the effects of alcohol as quickly as you did when you were younger.”
Some of those comments are hillarious aswell
They are related languages apparently

She's speaking about the Korean language. Roughly, she says Korean is the most scientific language in the world so learning it is easy. Korean also has a rich vocabulary. For example the taste of Makgoli (a type of Korean wine) can be described using different words.. They laugh when she says Makgoli has an amazing taste (in a slangy way) ......and then I get lost. lol
Finnish language is so strange, that Finnish people who can speak both Finnish and English fluently(95% of adults) can pretty easily learn to pronounce(not necessarily all the grammar and stuff, that's another thing) other languages. Way more easily than, for example, native English speakers can.

to put it short, finnish people can speak other languages
like why would a finnish lady want to learn korean of all languages korea that nobody really knows about except for the companies samsung LG hyundai.......kimchi maybe, and their gg breakdancers. and all the sc and wc3 lovers that know about the progame scene. ;o

Saw what looked like a black woman on a Chinese show speaking fluent Chinese a few years back. There's probably more foreigners in China than Korea/Japan, though they're all still goggled at.

No it´s not. Trust me I´ve lived here all my life. But norwegian is easiest, you just need to get drunk enough...
Ok. This isn´t cool, but there was this one finnish guy who was pretty good in learning different languages some hundred years ago. He went to different african tribes and learned each ones language in couple of weeks, I guess he learned tens of different languages, which is a lot

Exactly. Korean male speaks fluent English in real life. Where's my youtube video?
The point was more that she was on TV and spoke it, and that she has become a celebrity because of it. And you speaking english as korean is much different. Everybody speaks English, english is easy. But if you dont think this is cool, then go learn Finnish.

I don't think it's cool at all. And learning English isn't as easy as you think. People only learn English because the United States is currently the most powerful and richest country.

No the reason is history and that english has speakers spread wide so learning english is most convenient for you´ll find an english speaker anywhere. And this fact makes nations support teaching english in schools and so it becomes a requirement.
There is also one thing. People say they can speak fluent/perfect english but the fact is they almost never do, it´s just the requisites seem lower for this particular language... Don´t know if I explained it clearly enough but hey I´m not a native speaker...
I kinda understand what's up, I would also be very impressed to see someone from other country speaking perfect portuguese - I've seen many attempts and they were all very bad... I applaud them when they can speak maybe a couple of words, but most people really know nothing.
It's also pretty funny when artists try to speak portuguese. I remember a Pearl Jam concert when the production of the gig gave Eddie Vedder (who was fucking drunk) a handout with some words in portuguese. He tried speaking them and I swear to god not a single person in the crowd understood ANYTHING at all. Just speaking in english woulda have been ten thousand times more effective in that situation.
One way or the other, speaking a hard language is not something bizarre or interesting enough to be a TV show material, in my opinion. Koreans just deal with foreigners who embrace their culture in a funny way I guess.

Well truthfully, it did start with the English Empire, but since it pretty much disappeared during the 20th century, America has since picked up the mantle. You are lying to yourself if you think America's wealth and power doesn't have anything to do with the fact that most people around the world know at least a little English.

basically every european country has up to few hundred people studying korean yearly, some of them become translators, some dont. This is nothing to be excited about, its borderline boring
Most of the people in this thread and on TL are multilingual but I still get pleasantly surprised when another person displays complete fluency in another language in grammar, accent, etc.
On July 24 2009 05:26 Sigh wrote: Isnt English one of the hardest languages to learn beside hebrew or something like that
Err, not really. The grammar is pretty simple and there's no genders like in French or German (and many others). The pronounciation is just odd sometimes.
From what I've heard, Icelandic is very difficult. There was a show about a savant in English and he was challenged to learn Icelandic in 2 weeks and his coach spent a while talking about how difficult it is.

these "mismatches" always trip me up a little bit :p my doc has an asian assistant who speaks flawless russian, no accent whatsoever (better than me lol), also one of my past roommates was a black guy who spoke perfect russian as well
and the key is that they have absolutely no discernible accent, over the phone i'd never even guess.. has nothing to do with being fluent in the language, really. i've met russian speakers who can speak well, but you can tell they're not russian, these little quirks in how they say things, which, while still impressive, doesn't amaze me at all by comparison.
i can't judge if the lady in the OP spoke without an accent obviously, but i assume so

then get on TV and show it off how good you are! There are quite a few people in Finland or Norway for that matter that do stuff like this. So if they show on TV in another country, its quite huge. We scandinavian countries are so much SMALLER than US. If you dont get impressed by this, then I dont give a shit. But the fact that you come here, and think you know everything, and start thorwing out stupid shit and talk shit about other peoples success, when you have none. I dont tolerate that.

Err ... no, they aren't.
For the average English speaker, they will have a much, much easier time with Norwegian than Thai or Arabic, for example. Taking more time to learn doesn't always mean "more difficult" but it certainly doesn't make them easy.
