I've just been trying it out since they have just released it and now they're showing a live stream of it, and it seems very very basic. In case you don't know, wolfram alpha is said to be as big as google, if not bigger
It seems to just look for some keywords in your search and answer basic questions. It's very good at math though.
Try it out @ http://www.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=
EDIT: it seems that it wasn't officially released yet, but someone leaked this link and it does work

seems to be good for searching for facts, more of a rival for wikipedia than google

phale
+ Show Spoiler +seriously, this thing is awesome. but its not a search engine. its a computational knowledge engine

Doesn't know who is SlayerS_BoxeR.

Try typing your date of birth and it will tell you weekday, how many days you have lived etc

Haha considering that it's made by the same guy that made mathematica, it's not surprising that the site would have really nice math support. From the few queries that I've tried though, it's actually kind of inconvenient. Too specific of keywords will cause it to not understand your input, too few keywords will end up bringing you back information that you don't really need. I do love the concept behind the engine though, so hope that they'll improve the engine's interpretation abilities.

It's just like a chat bot!

I works really well for looking up definitions of english words as well as facts, such as "why is the sky blue"
Whereas google gives you a list of pages that might contain relevant information, this engine gives you answers straight up, sort of like a forced "I'm feeling lucky" model. I like it a lot and I think it's going to take off, especially when they improve their content.

EDIT: Nevermind, it works now.
Biological data appears to be slim, but at least it's there.

lol @ 100% clueless people comparing it to Google.
It does looks like a really nice tool, it has no many interesting stuff. Try typing "weather YourTown" or "dollar to yen". It gives you real time info. Nice time saver.

Yeah its pretty good with graphs and equations and anything involving math, but its really bad at finding information, thats where you go for google/wiki

It is only bad (or should I say good) for finding certain types of information. It is a complement to google search, competitor to google calculator, and competes with wikipedia for a good number of things.
And it adds something completely new because it generates information on the fly, google generates data on the fly.

Yeah but it will take quite a while to find a proper algorithm and code to do that, this project isnt anywhere near finished or refined except for math and equations. Its a great concept but quite lacking and requires some time to pull off using the internet as a Knowledge base to build your information isn't really easy to do, a project involving wiki in combination with this would be pretty awesome.

Wow, I must say, just looking at the chemistry section alone, this thing is IMPRESSIVE! this is really cool!
