in the fall (from september to december) I'm going to be in washington D.C interning (State department). After that I'm planning (hopefully) on finding work there for at least the rest of the year (until the following august), in which case I would need a place to live; so I was wondering what the cost of living was in the area.

for example currently I'm paying $1000/month (split between 3 people) for a house (almost 1000 sq ft). are the housing costs similar?

I'll ask my friends who have worked on the Hill, but I think it's extremely expensive. I can't say relative to what you're paying now, but I suspect your best option is to take advantage of the train system.

BTW, how hard was the State dept. internship? Which department did you apply for? I'm thinking of doing a Fall internship after I graduate, since I think it's a lot easier to get than Summer/Spring internships.

it's cheaper living outside of the city, and safer. i'd recommend looking on craigslist for places near a metro. i think northern virginia would be the best bet. near the pentagon, or franconia

I was under the impression that the area surrounding the capital is pretty low-income. I think this opinion formed because of some Dave Chapelle standup I watched where he was in D.C. and talking about how high the % of the population there is black.

Not necessarily split between 3 people. Ok well you could but some places it could be hard to find.

it's a program through school (UCDC for anyone whos from the UC system and knows of it).. it's basically where they send 15-20 kids per quarter to intern somewhere in DC, so i'll be going to the state dept... not entirely sure about the details yet, I should know for sure in the next month or two.

well I'm looking for something ideally less than 1000, since I probably won't be splitting it (I personally pay like 350)

idk if you'd be willing to take the metro, but outside DC it's cheaper and nicer imo.

But maybe in Dupont Circle there's probably a few places where you can rent. If you're ok being in the part of DC where there are a bunch of gays/lesbians. But on the bright side, they have some amazing food there.

Well travis is right, a lot of D.C. is very low income, but that doesn't mean you're going to find housing very easily, or at least somewhere you'll want to stay. I think it's changed within the past 5 years, but for a while the poorest school in the country was the one closest to the Capitol building.

Hey, can you tell me more about the program? I'm transferring to a UC next semester and working in DC would be awesome. Good luck in your internship, it sounds fascinating =).

i didn't mean it to bash homosexuals, just don't know how he feels towards them. And Dupont Circle is one of the safest places in DC. This is why I told him about it. If I were to move somewhere, I'd definitely want to be in a safe area. It's not like i told him to move to south east...

DC have some huge black neighborhoods. A lot of those area are low income. I am sure there are cheaper houses there.

for around that price range you can get a pretty decent place in a pretty decent area. if you want lower prices you can try looking in NE/E and even just outside of the city - by metro, it's maybe only ~20 minutes from the outskirts to the mall. the metro itself is really nice too, don't overlook it

my grandfather just retired from the police a few years back, and he worked in DC. They used to give escorts out of the bad sections of DC to white people. some places are pretty bad... anacostia for example..

I'm not sure the other UC's procedures, but for UCSD basically there's an application, you need a resume, a letter of intent, and 2 rec letters... then you turn everything in and they just pick 15 or w/e kids (I think people from any major can do it). You live in UC housing for the quarter, and after if/when you get accepted into the program you look for an internship in the area (you can intern ANYWHERE) ... and while you're in DC I think you take 1-2 BS classes along with the internship seminar and you're supposed to write a research paper (pretty lengthy I believe) about wherever you intern'd or whatever..

I'm not 100% sure of the details of what goes on when you're actually there, just full time intern+1 other class or something.
