Anyone heard the song 'you raise me up?'. It is the same fucking song as 'Danny boy', except the chorus of the former lacks the satisfying high note in the latter. There is nothing significantly different between the songs. There are fucking tiny changes...superficial differences in a few places but nothing big. It's just a fucking joke that someone can seriously say they 'wrote' that song.

The chords, feel, and cadences; and even the melody line are basically identical.

grrrr!!!!

danny boy:

stupid ass ripoff:

Have you ever heard 2 different rap songs? Of course not, because they sound very much alike and deal with exactly the same topics.

Have you ever heard of a cover? ...

Have you ever heard 2 different rap songs? Of course not, because they sound very much alike and deal with exactly the same topics.

The songs in the OP aren't even rap... Also: you're extremely uncultured and narrow minded.

danny boy is just a set of often misinterpreted lyrics set to the old irish tune Londonderry Air.

But yeah this copy is blatant and absolutely ridiculous that cocksuckers are making money with absolutely no talent.

i was playing londonderry air on the piano once and someone asked me if i was playing you raise me up. at that moment i mentally said "ok fuck this song"

lol ok.....

1. It was a simple joke highlighting the fact that when somebody who doesn't listen to a particular genre of music hears a few songs, the songs really tend to be similar lyrically and instrumentally. Ask a few people who love hip-hop to listen to country and they'll tell you the songs are talking about the same stuff, using the same instruments, etc and vice-versa. I found the joke funny because this is true most of all in rap where you can find so many songs that talk about blunts, hoes, rims, benjamins, stacks on deck, patrone on ice, the fact that they can pop bottles all night, and the list goes on.

2. I actually like a lot of rap music...Also: you're extremely shallow-minded because your definition of "uncultured" and "narrow minded" would imply that everybody is.
The beatings will continue until the morale improves.

Both song is based on the Londonderry Air,
the Danny boy version isnt entirely original

The song was created by Secret Garden, which I think has adaptations from the Londonderry Air theme
You cannot say that they are copying, because these are just remades of irish songs. Argubaly, you cay say the lyrics are more suitable to moden theme

Although I do agree they should claim its a remade version of the Londonderry Air. But LOTS of songs from secret garden are heavily influenced by folk/traditional music.

"I am strong when I am on your shoulders"
what kind of lyrics is that, I hope he's not standing on a girl.

I really can't hear the similarities, must be cuz ones got instruments and the others purely vocal. Btw, don't you believe in coincidences? music didn't get "invented" yesterday, it was only a matter of time before two original songs that would sound similar (in your ears) arose.

Either people aren't sure or I'm just dumb. (probably both) "You raise me up" is a Christian song. Listen to the lyrics... And there are alot of songs that sound similar or have hints. Probably because 1 artist was influenced by the song he "ripped off " from

Sorry for bumping an old thread: I have no good reason except that I just heard "You Raise Me Up", and the tune was exactly the tune of Danny Boy (Londonderry Air) except that one note or so at the end of each bar was changed (and not for the better either). So I Googled "you raise me up Danny Boy" and by coincidence TL was the second link that came up, and I couldn't resist the opportunity to vent, as Hamer did before me.

Anyway, I have no problem with artists covering tunes written by other people, but it takes some gall for Rolf Lovland to claim to be the "composer" of You Raise Me Up. On the other hand, he could hardly have chosen a better-known tune to rip off, so I don't know what he was thinking. Maybe it's supposed to be understood that "composed" means "changed a couple of notes here and there".

Listened to it. The beginning of the choruses are definitely very similar, and for a few notes they are exactly the same, but that doesn't compare to "You Raise Me Up", which is the extremely well-known Londonderry Air, with one or two tiny variations from the usual version. To make it worse, it apparently started as an instrumental piece by the "composer", Rolf Lovland, who then enlisted someone to write words for it. It's absurd that he tries to take any credit for the tune at all.

believe it or not, that has nothing to do with the subject of this blog.

None of the people who have commented on this 'You Raise Me Up', 'Danny Boy' and Londondery Air have it completey right.

The people who have claimed this piece 'You Raise Me Up' as their composition, lyrically, and musically have rightly done so. They wrote the music and the lyrics. The Chords, Cadence and melody are not the same. Cadence can vary significantly evben in the same song depending on arrangement, and the tempo any particular arranger may wish to use. Thematically Londonderry Air and the 'tune' for 'You Raise Me Up' are similar. Thematically, the lyrics are the same, but the words used are completely different. The Chords if simple and placed for use by a guitar for example could be exactly the same while the actual melody may be different. Some who have commented here do not know their musical theory knowledge to a good enough level to make the comments they have. As for someone playing'Danny Boy' and being questioned if they were playing 'Raise Me Up', that could be explained easily simply by nthe speed you played at and whastever little personal arrangements and interperatations you may have added.

Now to give a good example here of how music can be arranged and have different lyrics but sound similar is this:

There is a boys choir in England called Libera, for want of a better term, their theme song is 'Sanctus' Now there are literally thousands of 'Sanctuses' because it is of a religious theme. This particular piece is based on an arrangment of Pachobel's Canon in D. The choir Musical Director arranged both the music and wrote the lyrics for the song and can rightly claim that he wrote the song. He does acknowledge rightly the basis for the music he has written.

For those who can't work out the intent of the lyrics of 'You Raise Me Up' because there is a phrase 'I am strong when I am on your shoulders' because what if it is a girl, should leave music alone altogether. You have no idea at all. Themes, allegories, interperatation and parables etc are clearly beyond your ability to read, listen or both, and understand.
