I am trying to learn how to death growl and metal scream (maybe not scream but like the high pitch death metal singing) I know you use the saliva in your mouth to sing, but could anyone with experience help me out? I can get a pretty good low growl but the higher pitches hurt my throat alot. I also know for pigs squeals your supposed to breath in. is that correct?

I don't know anything about pig squeals but to learn to do opeth growls I had to do it drunk at first.

Just take in as big a breath as you possibly can, and try to exhale a lot of that breath while doing the growl. You really have to use a lot of air for it to get really low. And obviously open your throat as wide as it will go for pitch.

Higher pitched growls are harder imo. It's really like screaming. Just get drunk, have many fluids by your side for soothing your throat, and pretend like you're throwing a tantrum.

Once you mix the tantrum and the low opeth-style growls, you'll learn to achieve the effect you're looking for I believe.

Just do it a little each day. Don't overdo it at first or you could hurt yourself.

What band has pig squealing? I've never heard of that nor do I think I've ever heard it in a song. It sounds totally ridiculous lol.

Then again I don't listen to american metal.

Ok i like Bring me the horizon. its like that high pitch RAAAAAAHHHHH scream and then the low pitch angry growl he does. also the black dahlia murder has good higher pitch growls. They arent like all shall perish screams which are way too hard to do for me.

I think i do need to be under the influence even though just sitting in my room i could get some pretty loud screams (if anyone heard it would be so funny what they would think). I can do a low growl for a pretty long time i think ill have to try but my throat hurts from screaming for like 10 minutes is that normal?

listen to job for a cowboy, salt the wound, as blood runs black. Its like saying BREEE before words, its pretty good sounding as far as metal goes.

oh lord lol I agree with Boesthius' statement Please go listen to necrophagist and nile immediately! Even Immortal Who can resist abbaths charm? Since I'm generous and work in the music industry i'm willing to help you out because I dont want to hear another failed attempt at music I perform metal quite often and I have to do vocals for most of the songs I happen to play. You dont have to use loads of air at all (unless doing extremely long phrases or long notes)...and dont look to achieve high volume instantly, you should be able to do a growl and successful scream at the volume you usually speak with. Let mics amplify your voice (you'll get louder and you'll be able to handle different dynamics better as you progress in your practice). As far as the technique well I'm not much into the pig-like vocal inhaling at all :S It'll tear up your vocal cords for sure (and it just isn't pleasant). To achieve the sound in growls you have to use your diaphram (so when you breath in, your chest doesn't move....it should feel like you're filling your stomach).

In reference to how your throat feels, well it should be like you're talking out of your nose I suppose is a way it could be described What I mean is you shouldn't feel your throat constrict, but you'll notice your tongue is probably farther back than usual (to use your false vocal cords more effectively without destroying your true vocal cords). Overall, tongue placement will change as you get better with this certain vocal technique. Any other questions just pm me because I refuse to type more here unless you go listen to necrophagist.

Edit: btw dont mic cup please...it's a big nono in my book. It kills any crisp resolution in your phrases and makes everything you growl sound like a broken dishwasher. I'm not saying you do it but its really common when people start out.

p.s.- If your throat hurts you're doing it wrong. Take a break from it if it does start to hurt or you'll damage your voice even more.

BMTH = shitty deathcore

Go listen to some Nile or Hate Eternal for death metal if you want the real thing =/. Necrophagist's vocals have a little inward growling to them, if you want some of that.

QFT

I was at a gigantour concert earlier this year, and while children of bodom was fucking epic, JFAC was fucking terrible. It was an outdoor concert and we had to leave the main seated area to go sit in the grassy hill behind because they were so bad.

Guys, let's turn this into a thread about Necrophagist!

What's your guys' favorite Necrophagist song? Personally, I like Stabwound, followed by Only Ash Remains and Intestinal Incubation.

Ok then im confused on exactly what BMTH is then. I just like them because they have really sick breakdowns. Job for a cowboy is pretty bad live, but they have sick songs.

Ill try and find my voice and record some screams for you guys LOL.

I listen to metal all day and i dont really like necrophagist, its too crazy.. maybe i need to listen closer.

I guess it just takes time. Nile is fucking bad imo, its like shitty grindcore (which is really annoying)

"Oh no, we've drawn Judge Schneider" "Is that bad?" "Well, he's had it in for me ever since I kinda ran over his dog" "You did?" "Yeah...if you replace the word *kinda* with *repeatedly*...and the word *dog* with son"

They have pretty funny lyrics though. and i like the breakdowns like i said..

Yea (Necrophagist) they are too technical its annoying..

ok I will record some stuff tommorow, im fucking tired and my voice hurts..

Damn. T_T
The Faceless are ok, but they just steal riffs from so many other bands, a few of their songs even sound like Nile at alot of points.
Necrophagist can be good, but sometimes they get annoying. Same with Psycroptic, Spawn of Possession, Anata, etc.
You just have to be in the mood for it.
If your a fan of breakdowns, go listen to All Shall Perish, Whitechapel, etc.

Abigail Williams is ok, I'll definately listen to them.
Here's the issue though Hypnosis.
Your going to be harrassed and ridiculed for listening to that stuff over Nile, Necrophagist for a lot of reasons.
The main ones having to do with the fact that they ARE just mindless breakdowns, the lyrics have nothing great to them at all, and they are a fad.
And the main issue I'd say is, you may be a scene kid.
WHAT ARE SCENE KIDS YOU MIGHT ASK?
People who think grindcore is iwrestledabearonce, and think that job for a cowboy truly is death metal.

I understand the greatness of the older bands, and i respect them i just dont personally listen to them over say, BMTH or JFAC.. go abigail williams!!

Im definately not a scene kid i just enjoy darker lyrics over shit you hear on the radio (see Naglfar )..
I know scene kids, and its just a style of this decade so it doesn;t bother me if they wear too-tight pants because i don't vouch for other kids lol.

I also listen to older bands like The Misfits and such so i DO know what good music is.. JFAC is pretty intense but i would probably classify it as deathcore? Not sure..

Anything that sounds good and i want to hear again is good as long as its metal.. Except COB's new album and cradle of filths new album.

and NO i do not hardcore dance LOL.

Im going to try to get more into necrophagist it sounds like a great band, just hard to get into..

edit: grindcore is way too annoyingly fast, even for me.

Hypnosis, heard of Death? No one seems to have except for the cutie that sold me the Death shirt I just bought today. Basically, it's pretty much the original Death metal. It's well worth checking out; it leaves BMTH in the dust even thought Chuck is now dead.

-edit- not some of, it's THE original death metal.

First Death song I heard was Spirit Crusher (I realise we're not talking about that, but we SHOULD)
