Don't raid in WoW anymore so it only occupies so much of my time and I have a competitive itch, basically looking for something fun with a decent competitive side without a huge skill/entry barrier. Not interested in Dota, invested to much time and got way to addicted to go back.
My choices right now are
Heroes of the storm - fun and new and I'm pretty good at it, doesn't seem to be taking off much but still alpha, I miss the laning phase from league but the action is fun
League - huge fan/playerbase, great competitive scene, seems really hard to break into I feel like I'd be really far behind. Not as new/room for improvement that Hots has
Hearthstone - not really willing to spend money so hard to compete on limited time, not really a dedicated game either, could play this along with something else
CS:GO - I used to compete in 1.5 way way way back but now the game is pretty complex and honestly with the hacking on ladder and ESEA guys being WAY better than I am it would be hard to compete at any level.
Note: When I say compete I want a game I can work towards being competitive, even if say I never got out of bronze in league at least the idea of/working towards improving is a big part of my enjoyment. I have no delusions of being a pro/amateur at any game but the effort to improving towards this goal is part of why I play/enjoy a game
Any suggestions or thoughts? Hots is the one that's winning for me right now because its an easy transition to a blizzard game, its fairly fun and new.
Fifa is fairly entertaining. I`m no football (soccer) fan at all, but the game is quite nice in multiplayer (local even more) and has challenging gameplay and control mechanics. It follows the *easy to learn, hard to master* approach. Each game is rather short (6:30min, halftime included; back in fifa 10). You would need a gamepad though.
If you are absolutely not interested in football at all, take a look at other sport games maybe.
I'm playing cs and i really enjoy it, but you know more about cs than I do and you've played it before so i dont know.
Fifa - its pretty fun, but the gameplay gets repetitive for me and the Ultimate Team thing burns up time and money. Also in every game addition it costs 60 bucks only for a few minor changes =.=
Hearthstone got boring for me, but i've played it for about a year. After a year of playing I have enough cards to be relevant in the meta, but grinding to get to that point is soul-crushing. (I went free to play)
I think with League, you hit most of the important points. The community is massive, and active. The pros have a lot of personality, which makes the competitive scene easy to follow, and there are plenty of resources to do so (ie. Twitch, youtube, reddit).
To address your fears about getting past the beginners' margin: -the game is easy enough to learn, that once you have decent mechanics, focusing on laning/positioning also becomes easier -hard enough that if you achieve a middle division like platinum, in ranked play, you are better than 9/10 players -I have a few friends that were able to rank up to diamond (top 3%) within 3 months time, so it is most certainly possible -assuming you are already bronze, based on your postscript, you're past the most time consuming part of playing ranked
I have always, will always, enjoy league of legends. Right now, everything about the game is great. Passing up on the better parts of LoL and its ranked play would be akin to never having experienced vanilla WoW and the changes it brought it gaming itself. I suggest your consider what this fanboy has to say.
Yeah my big beef with league from back when I played in S2 (I think) was wanting to play ADC but having to fight over rolls in ranked with almost everyone. It is tempting to go back to, laning and last hitting is like zen to me.
Out of those, I would try Heroes of the Storm, although I have never played it, it seems like it would provide the most fun! That or CS:GO, I have never played either but both seem they would have a little more replayability than Hearthstone or LoL IMO.

I was going to say that Play Planetside 2.
Wait, there are more than me and griD on TL still knowing of Planetside 2?
I've stopped playing it a few days ago due to the Miller Server issues (lag) and the decline of overall leadership due to poor development focus of SOE (probably mostly burnout after 2000 hours as a leader), but yeah, the competitive matches in Planetside 2 are a lot of fun, especially ServerSmashes with it's 100s of players on each side.
It also has a small competitive scene for smaller matches, mostly organized by planetsidebattles.org, so even if you aren't into the strategic game you can do 12vs12 infantry-only or tank matches on private servers.
Or you just organize your own scrims against other outfits:

I dled Banished the othre day since it was half price. It's a pretty good game for the price
Shovel Knight is the MAD NOTES YO. Super fun, challenging, and a great score as well! Levels are definitely classic ideas, but they have their own spin on them. Really great game, and the devs seem like awesome folks.
I actually find Planetside fun but like I said before I'm looking for a game with a competitive scene, Honestly thought right now it's narrowed down to Heroes of the storm or Hearthstone, Hearthstone mainly because I can do it while doing other things but damn if I'm not enjoying heroes.
