by eSports Journalist Barry Climbdown
Yeah here I go, rolling up my sleeves. Let me just take off my glasses here and set them down on this shelf I had made especially for resting them on when I am about to engage in all-out war on Twitter. OK, I’m ready. Let’s post!
But first, allow me to fill you in on a little ‘backstory’ as we say.
Hench Needly is the CEO of Flange Gaming, and he’s talking about my article that quoted him as saying that the player-base for their game was mostly “nerds operating in a World where sex with other people is considered technologically advanced”.
The thread goes like this…
@HenchNeedly: Can’t believe this article by @TheBarryClimbdown. How is this journalism?
@ShittFecker69: Incredible. Definitely not clickbait!
@SofiaHurtsallover: Yet another sad indictment of the games industry’s attitude to women.
@TheBarryClimbdown: @HenchNeedly, I will not have my integrity called into question. Journalism is about the truth and about spreading that truth to as many people as possible.
@HenchNeedly: @TheBarryClimbdown didn’t you write that clickbait article titled “Is Peter Molyneux a Satanist?”
@TheBarryClimbdown: @HenchNeedly I don’t see how that’s relevant.
I know Hench from waaaaay back and we’re really close and everything but that’s not important I just wanted you to know how totally connected I am to the games industry. Anyway, I mean that’s no big deal it’s just…yeah the Hench Needly. He followed me on Twitter for a short time. No it wasn’t an accident, he even replied to one of my tweets. He said
That’s no accident.
We had a falling out because I asked him for a job and he turned me down and I may have called him out on that in an article entitled “Hench Needly Dines on the Hearts of Children”.
Anyway, someone sent me a Skype chat log where apparently Hench said all this shit that I won’t repeat here. Not until I post it in an article that’s going up next week. The article will be called “Hench Needly, CEO of Flange Gaming, Just Called a Female Co-worker a BITCH”.
No he didn’t DIRECTLY call her a bitch, but I mean if you read between the lines it’s clear that he doesn’t like her very much. Yeah this is TOTALLY relevant to gaming, what are you talking about?
Anyway, back to Twitter…
@HenchNeedly: @TheBarryClimbdown would you care to supply a source for that quote where I apparently insult our player-base?
@TheBarryClimbdown: @HenchNeedly Now who is the “fat retarded neckbeard living off scraps from the kids’ table at Christmas Dinner”
@HenchNeedly: @TheBarryClimbdown and would you care to supply a source for THAT quote?
@TheBarryClimbdown: @HenchNeedly I wouldn’t call it a quote. It’s more of a general vibe.
@HenchNeedly: @TheBarryClimbdown YOU CAN’T PUT SHIT IN QUOTES IF IT’S NOT A FUCKING QUOTE YOU LITTLE CUNT
@ShittFecker69: woah @HenchNeedly just called @TheBarryClimbdown a cunt on twitter
@SofiaHurtsallover: Yet another sad indictment of the games industry’s attitude to women.
Anyway THAT tweet of his got deleted and he since posted a ten page grovelling apology on his blog asking people to better understand why he called me a “CUNT”. And that’s a quote.
I think getting him to blow-up publically like that was probably my finest hour. I got twelve new Twitter followers after that and there was a thread on reddit about it. It was the top thread in /r/gaming. What was it called? I forget.
(editor’s note: wasn’t it the one called “Barry Climbdown is a disgrace and should be fired”??)
Dude, Hench Needly needs to get taken down a peg or two. At Gamescrum last year I asked him for an interview and he said he was too busy. I managed to grab his arm just as he was about to take the stage to make the keynote speech and I asked him then but I mean come on, those things always start late and I had an important question about how this one time he didn’t flush the toilet and left this big turd floating there for the next guy.
See THIS is what’s wrong with the Games Industry. Nobody takes accountability, and Games Journalists like me are just called bitter liars and fantasists, and then we get denied access to the people at the top which makes my job so fucking hard.
I mean is it any wonder we have to make shit up? I mean, not ‘make it UP‘, per se, but you know, I mean “made UP”, it’s “upped”. It’s increased in goodness. It’s made UP, not made DOWN.
All we have to work with is what we can glean from covertly copy-pasted chatlogs forwarded to us by disgruntled former employees, and infer from blogs and forum posts and press releases. That’s not really enough to construct an article, y’know? I mean I don't know how some of these guys do it. I think they must be sucking the games industry's dick or something. When they write something that looks all "researched" and fucking "journalistic" and things like "integrity" and so on....tryhards, man. They're just desperately hoping someone will give them a job.
Anyway we’ll see what people make of my new article “Hench Needly – is he an Anti-Journalite? If Not Why Hasn't He Hired Me?”
