I made a blog post about a month ago saying I got accepted into college. Since then I have received acceptance from all the colleges I applied to. Not a single deferral nor a denial. Me and my entire family (immediate, cousins, ect) lives on the east coast. While I did apply to the state colleges in my area I applied to Hawaii. I always wanted to travel and Hawaii has the environment that suits my major, Japanese language studies. My long-term goal is to stay out there are situate myself out in Hawaii but I can't help but feel I could be making the wrong decision. Not in terms of fiances and such as I can get by but just the social decision. I mean my whole family is in the east coast and they would be unable to occasionally do a 6,000 mile flight to Hawaii. So really after this August I won't see my family for, a long time. I just wonder if its worth it.

If your given the same opportunity as I am would you go through staying out in Hawaii?

why would your family go to visit you while you are in college? And if you do decide to stay in hawaii they have a nice place to vacation in!

Your final decision should be what you want and what is best for you though

For me I'd regret not going rather than going. Therefore I'd go. Unless there's a specific reasons to stay home (family health etc) I think having the opportunity to go to school in another state is awesome, especially if it'd fulfilling your academic needs to the fullest.

I dislike my family, so I'd go to Hawaii.

But honestly, do what you think is best for your future and which you'd enjoy more. You've been with your family for the majority of your life and your future sounds ideal for Hawaii.

Why not try it? Don't like it, go back, but at least you can tell yourself that you did it!

From a logical point of view, going to Hawaii could be bad because you will most likely lose business communications once you move back to wherever you are going to live. The connections you make in Hawaii will eventually deteriorate when you move back. So all you'll be taking back with you is your degree. So if your state schools will give you a better degree than the school in Hawaii, it's more logical to choose that. At the same time, you're putting yourself in a position to be lonely. If you've lived with your parents your entire life it's going to be weird without them and it might be hard for you to adjust to living alone.

On the flip side, Hawaii offers a life experience while still fulfilling your education requirement. It's important for a person to experience the world because that is how you grow to become a better person. In short, this is how I would deal with it:

If you're 17/18 years old and inexperienced: Move to Hawaii. If things don't work out, you can always transfer back to your state school as long as you maintain your grades. Don't read the paragraph below.

If you're older and more experienced: Then you probably already know school is school and people are people and your education is simply what you make it regardless of where you go. You'll deal with the same types of people there as you will anywhere. Stay at home and leave traveling for holidays and vacations.

And to make your decision a little bit harder, here's an awesome video:

I like most members of my family, but I would regret not going moreso than going as well.

If you start feeling homesick, that's normal. I've gone to Scout Camp for one weak a year for multiple years, and every year during the first day of returning to Scout Camp I feel homesick. The first few days of the first week will be the hardest. Make sure to establish facebook chats, google chats(using gmail), etc.

Oh and, don't 'accidentally' leave anything you are going to need behind. Not a good idea.

Go, and don't look back.

My advice is to follow your heart. Go with what you decide is best for you. Thinking about your family in all of this is a nice gesture, but college is for you. So, choose what's in your best interest, and

I'm gonna go with most of the other posters and say the same. Go for it, man!

Ofcourse I have no idea how your familiy functions, but seeing as you seem to care for them alot I'm going to assume you have a good relationship with them. If this is the case, sure it will be tough, but your familiy will understand.

You can always come back, and being away from your family for a few years can be a really healthy thing too! Just be true to yourself, that's what I'd want for my loved ones atleast!

The experiences you will have while living by yourself are invaluable, and will be a part of you for the rest of your life. The experiences you will have while travelling abroad will open your mind to the world you live in. If you are able to go abroad safely, as in financially stably, and you are pursuing a degree you have genuine interest in, then go. Irregardless of that, you should still probably go.

Your family will always be your family, and one day you will need to truly break apart from them. This doesn't have to be that day.
There is no one like you in the universe.

I guess it depends on your personality, whether you should go, but if you don't you'll probably regret it.

I'd thought that Hawaii would hate the Japanese.

Something must have gone right in US-Japanese relations post WW2.

Ultimately the decision is up to you. I traveled away from my family for college but I hate my mom. I don't think there's much difference in what you learn or don't learn at any school.

Frost's famous poem The Road Less Traveled, is actually not about taking the path that less people choose; it's about how people often make decisions where both options look the same, and then 50 years later they like to say that the decision made all the difference in their life. He says that in reality the decision probably did nothing.

I don't believe that Frost is correct as decisions like one's college have a huge impact on one's life but I don't believe it's possible to see which one is the better choice from here. Too much undergrowth in the way.
I think in our modern age technology has evolved to become more addictive. The things that don't give us pleasure aren't used as much. Work was never meant to be fun, but doing it makes us happier in the long run.

Dude, the whole point of college is to get as far away from your family as possible!

Just kidding.

That's cool you like your family. In the end though, if you do what you think is best for YOU, they will accept you unconditionally. If you don't think that that is a valid option, then just keep in mind the old saying "It's easier to ask for forgiveness than permission".

if you have no plan to attend grad school, choose the place you want to live in. Of course people move around, but by the time you graduate, you are going to think about getting internships and jobs and those opportunities are usually close by. I am not saying it will be impossible to get a job out of state, but opportunities will be more plentiful within your school's state and all the connections you make in college will be more useful while you stay within.

I feel like you're wasting a lot of money to major in Japanese. Go to the cheapest decent school you can find. Not worth all those loans man, years down the line you are going to regret it.
