Shaving used to be one of my most hated things in life. I have very sensitive skin and shaving didn't help it at all. Most of my friends can shave in whatever way they like, against the grain, quick hacking motions, some can do it without shaving cream(!) and they're still fine. Good for them, but if I try doing the same I will leave a bloody trail on my face that will take weeks to heal.

So I'd shave as rarely as possible and walk around with massively irritated face for days afterwards even if I took extreme care. I tried out various blades and shaving creams but nothing worked, each time I pulled the razor across my face I could feel my hair being pulled and ripped. Shaves were terrible too. And cost of cartridges, yikes! I just didn't know any better. My father used cartridges, my friends too so I did as well. Until recently.

Enter safety razor
[image loading]

After discovering these totally badass looking things it didn't take me long to find out that there were whole shaving communities and many people were having same problems as I. So I did as per recomendations, got myself a safety razor, blades, badger hair brush and a proper shaving cream (apparently, only crap is sold in regular stores).

And what do you know, it worked. In fact, I've come to enjoy shaving and do it every day. There was a rather rough learning period where I pretty much butchered my face due to applying too much pressure and incorrect blade angle, but once I got that sorted out, it was awesome. When I shave with safety razor I don't feel anything, I just hear this completely terrifying sound (hrrrrRRRRhHHHHH) as my hair get sliced off neatly. I have problems finding any stuble on my face and I no longer get skin irritation. It's just such a stark contrast to regular shaving with disposable cartridges. To think I was completely brainwashed by commercials to use way inferior products that cost much more. I can buy 100 blades for 10 euro which is dirt cheap compared to gillette cartridges. I started throwing away blades after each shave because why the hell not, it costs cents.

Overall, I'm extremely happy with my purchases. My whole shaving kit cost me about 60 euro which might seem like a significant amount of money but most of it was one time pickups and i'll be saving alot on blades from now.

TLDR:
If shaving makes you feel regret about being born a man OR you're tired of paying absurd amounts of money for cartridges OR you're tired of getting shitty shaves every day, strongly consider starting wetshaving.

Cheers.

Every two weeks I shave my face with a barber shaver. I don't like my shaver because it cuts too close. I want a trimmer, but can't be bothered buying one. I like facial hair on my face, just not it bulging like it does now ):

Kudos for learning how to shave properly.

Safety razors are one of the best ways to shave, but keep in mind that it's not safe at all. It will take time to figure out the patterns for the angles you should shave at, the blades you should use, and the shaving soap that is best for your skin. You'll probably cut yourself a few times pretty good.

In time it will save you money and you can get a barber shop quality shave with absolutely no grain on your face at all. It has become a semi religious experience for me every week or so when I do it. Taking 30 minutes out of my day to play some old tunes and whip up a nice soapy lather, and then shaving my face with the up most detail as I reflect about whats going on in my life. Might sound cheesy, but it's actually very relaxing. And trust me, the women notice the difference from your 5 min disposable razor shave and a detailed shave from a safety razor or straight razor

Why did you not ask for a trimmer as a christmas present?

I shave with an epic duo of electric razors. Fuck blades which cut my face to no end because I always jerk my hand randomly laterally lol.

why not use an electric rasor from the beginning??

you couldnt cut yourself even if you wanted too and it shouldnt shave close enough to give the impression that your face is melting...

props for learning2shave though.

I tried multiple electric razors. I found them even worse than disposables tbh. Shaves were horrible. I'd have a very noticeable shadow at 2-3PM which was a Bad Thing as my beard does not grow uniformly and I end up looking really poor. At least with disposables I can get through the day. Skin irritation I found to be about the same. Maybe I just tried out the wrong brands, dunno.

Gillette and other such razor bullshit is probably the biggest hoax ever. $20+ for a pack of razors that stay sharp for like three uses at tops. Gillette is a part of the Illuminati, I'm certain that there is some conspiracy behind all of it.

Wtb less sensitive skin on my face please, only able to shave after a hot shower otherwise I get bad razorburns. Someone recommended an electric razor but then some say that that's even worse. :/

Congratulations!

Do you mind sharing your exact setup?
I feel like I should try safety razors, since I also have some problems with irritated skin (and would also like to stop wasting ridiculous amounts of money on cartridges...). I'm reading some shaving forums and trying to get an idea what would be a good investment, but I wouldn't mind if you pitched in your experience, too.

I have a gillette and I love it, but last time i went to buy more razorblades the pack of extra blades cost more than the razor with the initial set (the same amount of blades), so I just bought a whole new razor cause why not. Im in china for break though and they're a lot cheaper here hehe

I also use a safety razor and have done so fairly recently (over the past 2 months). I was using a regular Gilette before. The safety razor requires that you make several passes. You can get a pretty close shave but you need to make multiple passes or else it'll come out to be worse than a regular manual razor or electric razor.

The only 2 benefits I see so far are it's actually nicer going through the routine of shaving vs any other method, obviously a personal thing, and you save money on replacing cheap razors rather than super expensive Gilette/namebrand razor heads.

It does take significantly longer to shave. And if you start using the fancy shaving cream like IMlemon mentions or the badger hair brush ... the cost increases dramatically.

The one I use is a Edwin Jagger: http://www.amazon.com/Edwin-Jagger-De89lbl-Double-Safety/dp/B002RBF1PO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1356685402&sr=8-1&keywords=jager razor

I always been contemplating using a standard razor as I'm so accustomed to the electric but it doesn't provide that clean shave. The more I use the electric the thicker my 5'o clock shadow gets next day, maybe its time to man up and use a razor.

cost of razors is cheap -_- 1 pack of 12 has lasted me over 2 years.

Then again I only use my gillette razor on my neck to clean up after I use my trimmer so to each their own :p

It helps to use an electric razor with smallest/small attachment to get your facial hair as short as it can before using a razor. This makes the razor infinitely more effective, and gives it more longevity.

Yeah I just use an electric razor. It's just so much easier that way.

Maybe one day I'll switch to a normal razor if I want to get a really close shave :X
