Part 3 of a blog about a New Cutstom Hotkey Layout from FoxyMayhem and JaKaTaK
Spreadsheet!
Here's a Laundry List of things we need to decide/do before we release TheCore for beta: Nothing
TheCore, the new layout developed in conjunction with FoxyMayhem (creator of DarkGrid), is now released in beta! This layout goes far beyond anything I've ever seen in layouts, and improves on JaKaTaK Righty in every way.
It may see changes as this is our first pulic beta. If you're okay with that, and want to take your control to the next level and reduce wrist strain, dive in!

With all these over-hype, you would actually expect that this hotkey is supposed to be like the coming of Jesus or something. Not to undermine your efforts, but I hardly think this will be anything revolutionary.

I'm not trying to hype it up man. People keep asking me when its going to come out. I'm just trying to help the people who are interested get a good idea of how much longer it will be.
As far as how good the layout will be, we will have to wait and see.

I'm pumped to know the name once it's been chosen... but it's for completely selfish reasons :S
The reason I'm following this setup closely is because I'm switching to Zerg for a second time the second this comes out (no pun intended). I don't want to get used to backspace injects then have to switch to whatever the inject method is for this setup.
No rush, though. Take your time, I only want to practice for TSL4 qualifiers. (jk)
Too bad I can't help at all to speed it up, though. I'm not at all a programmer.

Thanks man. Really appreciate your support. If there's anything I can do to help speed up the process via community assistance I will let you know :D

I don't want to get used to backspace injects then have to switch to whatever the inject method is for this setup. Chances are like 100%that there will be the layered camera thing like in Darkgrid(it its not in i wont change form my actual mix of both:D). With those cameras you can use the method from Darkgrid which is the most exact method and after some practise as fast as the shitty basecam method.
If u dont like it like that use TLO´s method, clicking on the minimap, thats the second very viable option and if u cant force u to look on the minimap while doing the other method its actually better to me, but thats personal preference only.
Both you can practise already, i dont think that the motion itself will change a lot but still, try the minimap inject till its out and probably you will stick to it.
If u want to basecam inject its even easier, there wont be a change because its only 1button to press(i put that button on my mouse while trying out that inject method)
No rush, though. Take your time, I only want to practice for TSL4 qualifiers. (jk) good luck there!
Debug mass replay analyzer to recognize: If your totally out of time send me the code...i doubt that i can get into it fast with the shortage of time but seeing some different code then the stuff i have to code for tests in like 1month cant be bad, at least for my spirit cuz im getting sick of that tests based on total repetition but no time for even little mistakes
All Global Keys aside from Location Keys, Control Groups, and the Next Subgroup Button. IMO stay with a mix you feel good with, you cannot adjust efficienty with control groups and location keys since gameplay does change (at least till flash showed the one and only perfect play) and people play differently. Some will use the subgroup button only a few times, others use it a lot because they e.g. bind queens and all upgrade buildings in one controlgroup, same for terran and for toss i dunno i dont play silly op aliens
|
We have decided to design the layout around a 2 macro control group setup (which is described in the spreadsheet) If you don't want to use more macro control groups and deprioritize the next subgroup button you should! It would just be insane to add more layouts to the 48 variations we're already planning on making.

Don't sell yourself short! You've got it dude, go own that tournament!
EDIT: 4/9 is on the control group side and not the ability side................. uhhhhhggggggggghhhhhhhh wtf
EDIT #2: Got the basic mousebuttonless version done. Just have to add the remaining global keys. Check out dat spreadsheet!

Took a look at the spreadsheet and it looked pretty solid. Have a suggestion though. I think that enter for chat is a waste of one of the most accesible keys that could be used for a save location or jumping between ccs/hatches/nexus. I would put chat on TAB BLOQ/ MAYUS as the hand falls to it naturally when you're going to type. Keep up the good work!!!
|
I agree that Enter for chat is a waste. If that could be changed it would free up a really good button to hit.
I looked at the spreadsheet and it looks awesome! I'll try to manually input some commands into my hotkey setup so I can start testing this as Zerg ^^

what is tab bloq/ mayus. are you talking in qwerty terms or do you have a different keyboard, I'm confused.
As far as enter for chat, it just lined up that way. F7 is a more efficient base camera, and all 8 location camera's are on much easier keys to hit than enter. Make sure your left hand is on JIOPshift, the escape side of the keyboard is tilted away from you, and your left arm is at a slight inward angle. If you curl your hand naturally it should follow the P;? angle.

Enter is not actually as easy as it looks, it forces a lot of wrist rotation and finger displacement. We have been experimenting with pressing it with the thumb however.
MANUALLY UPDATE YOUR LAYOUT FROM THIS SPREADSHEET AT YOUR OWN RISK.
There will be changes to the layout, it is not complete yet, this is not as efficient as it will be once we run it through the ergonomic penalty vs keystroke frequency analyzer. You are of course welcome to do whatever it is that you want :D
Enjoy.

Woops silly me. I meant either Tab or Caps Lock (bloq mayus is in spanish :D).

oooooohhhhh..... I see what you mean now. Fortuantely all of the game keys are placed on the easiest keys first, and the keys easier to press are used up before we got to the enter key so no problems there :D
EDIT: working out the bugs in the analyzer now, hopefully we can catch em all! burrow/unburrow are done. The left handed version file is finished and I am testing it personally. The right handed version file should be complete today. Then all we have to do is tweak based on penalties, choose a name, and get the art/explanation done. Sooooooon :D :D :D

Soon! ohmygoshohmygoshohmygosh!
hey um, is there a possibility that the magical analyzer you guys are using to be released? It would be good to use your method on other PC games as well :o
|
Amazing! i honestly cannot wait for this!! been following this and the other threads religiously in the past month i will miss pressing F5 every few hours after this comes out =)

The software works by analyzing replays, so I'm pretty sure you would have to reprogram it for other games, given that they even have a 'replay' feature.

(OnTopic): So you're only releasing it for beta testing soon? How long until the release version comes out, do you think?

Got my mechanical keyboard coming, hopefully this setup will be done by then, so I can start learning terran from the ground up.
Thanks for doing this!

Thanks everyone. We're getting closer. The analyzer works with Sc2 replay files, so you'd have to basically rewrite almost everything to make it work for other games, but, custom hotkey layouts based on data is really the best way to go IMO. It would be great if when a game was released, the standard hotkeys were based on aggregated data from the beta testing or something.
I'll be making a 4th post in this blog series that announces the beta. For those of you who just want to try it in your normal style of playing, that's fine. But the data we're seriously looking to improve is the control group data, and to do that, we need people to set their control groups a particular way so that we can get consistent data to pull from. Anyone willing to do this for us would be helping us a lot.
Thanks :D
