So I'm quite curious if there are any notable Kong-like figures in other sports outside of Starcraft. Of course, SC2 has MKP and BW had YellOw, but I've always wondered if similar silver-miners exist outside of Starcraft. Unfortunately, I have very limited knowledge of sports in general.
However, my younger brother does play tennis extensively, and he has said that Andy Murray is quite a Kong when it comes to tennis, having never won a Grand Slam despite reaching the finals and semi-finals of quite a few of them.
So are there any players or teams outside of Starcraft that would qualify as Kongs of their respective sports?
Yeah, there is. There is Fenerbahçe in Turkish Soccer, they even celebrated 2nd place once and their title last year turned out to be match fixing, which would result into another 2nd place if the matches weren't fixed.
Raymond Poulidor in cycling. He finished the Tour de France 3 times second, and 5 times third. While being always very well placed, he never ever wore the Yellow jersey lol.
It even has become an expression in French language. When you say someone is a Poulidor, it's like saying he always finishes second.
edit : oh and he did very well at special events, which makes him a proud member of the Kong Line.
German football (in the sense of soccer ) team Bayer Leverkusen managed to place second in the national league (Bundesliga, losing their first place in the last match), second in the national cup (DFB Pokal) and second in the Champions League, losing 1-2 to Real Madrid (with that genius goal of Zidane..) in the 2001/2002 season.
Since then they are sometimes called "Bayer Vizekusen", analogous to e.g. Vice-President.
Jimmy "The Whirlwind of London Town" White, turned pro in 1980, won 10 world tour titles.
Achieved his highest World Rank 87-89 with 2nd place, but never made the #1 spot.
Reached the finals of the World Championship 5 times. Lost the World Championship final in 1984. Lost the World Championship final in 1990. Lost the World Championship final in 1991. Lost the World Championship final in 1992. Lost the World Championship final in 1993. Lost the World Championship final in 1994.
In '92, he was in the lead with 14:8, only to lose every single following frame, ending up down 14:18. In '94, he was in the lead 37:24 in the last frame at 17:17, and after a 2day-marathon, he missed a Black from the spot. See video:

There is an inside joke between me and my brother where I would shout "LEBRON!" in every match or sport that doesn't actually involve Lebron. It was partially inspired by Hotbid's Portal 1 run-through and the epic art that someone made for it.
I also plan on trolling a restaurant by claiming that I am "Nadal Federer." I wonder how that will go...
