Lately i have been a bit bored at times because im missing something i can play to relax after practising SC2, so im looking for a game (preferably singleplayer - dont wanna get addicted to some MMORPG :D) to play in my "free" time.
RPGs i have played in the past that i enjoyed were, among others: Baldurs Gate 2, Icewind Dale, Neverwinter Nights, Diablo 1/2, Darkfall (best!!), Skyrim. There were also several games that i played that were meh, like WoW (asdf), dungeons something (super easy + boring game, forgot the name), warhammer online ("pvp"ing vs npcs, no thx), aion (lol grind fml), cabal online (even worse).
Unfortunately Skyrim got kinda boring, even though i never really had a high character of my prefered choice (magic) because its a pain in the ass to level and melee archery smithing is just so much easier. Once i played through the bigger quest chains i kinda saw everything and yes meh.
I tried Oblivion, but the graphics and the control (you look right when you want sideways rightwards, that annoyed the shit out of me) annoyed me too much. also not everything in the interface was doable with hotkeys, too much moving around the mouse and clicking, that tilts me too T_T
In general i like fantasy RPGs, scifi is pretty much out of question. my prefered role/class is glasscannon/mage.
So yes hm, i guess thats it, i hope to get some good suggestions.
Oh and, preferably it should be possible to buy the game online (steam for example) and download it.
Imho, Kotor 1/2 are both in the top 5 games of all time. They both have very immersible stories, and are well voice acted. You actually make impacts on the story with your decisions in game, and the combat is fun and challenging, but not complicated nor impossible. There is no grinding whatsoever.
Its not fantasy though, if that kills it for you...
Oblivion sucked pretty hard compared to Morrowin imo.
.. Speaking of which if you didn't play Morrowind, do it. Now. It may be similar to Skyrim (I didn't play it yet, no time for this atm) but it was, with Baldur's gate 2, one of the very best RPG experience I had. Maybe someone who played both could tell what the biggest differences are (if any).
Final Fantasy 6. Far and away the best Final Fantasy game in my opinion, rivaled only by 7. You'll have to get an emulator to play it, but it shouldn't be that hard. Oh, and get it on SNES, the GBA version's music is different IIRC

I would have to agree, 2 best RPGs I've ever played but they are Star Wars, and scifi. Give them a try, though!
You tried NWN, but not NWN2? I liked NWN (didn't play all the expansions though) and I liked NWN2 even better (played original + MotB). NWN2 (full, including both expansions) is available on steam.
Oh, but you hated Cabal Online T_T I loved that game, the combo system was definitely my favourite part of it and I loved playing FB because a well-timed assassinate broke most WA/FS combos (and mass root/debuff was amazing in nation wars). Not sure how end-game you got in Cabal, but nation war and pluma hunting were enough reasons for me to keep playing that game.
One thing I did after I got bored on Skyrim was playing through it again on the hardest difficulty, except this time only allowing myself to put perks into Block, Two-Handed Weapon, and Heavy Armor, and not carrying a bow or using any magic besides Shouts and the healing spell you start with.
You are a slow-moving, poorly-equipped melee fighter without sneak or magic up against opponents who are straight-up stronger than you.

I also recommend KotOR, truly epic games. Another game to consider is Vampire Masquarade: Bloodlines, probably the most underrated game of all time (it had tons of bugs when it came out, so make sure to get all the unofficial patches); great story and gameplay with amazing atmosphere. And last but not least, Fable: The Lost Chapters is also a fun game; not as deep as Baldurs Gate, but fun nevertheless.

It's unbelievably hard.
It will make a man out of you.
Do it.
I have to wholeheartedly disagree with you sir. There is only one thing that will make a man out of you.

I was thinking about something like this, but with focusing on magic instead, but i have a feeling it will just mean i have to zone between dungeon areas all the time to regenerate mana and slowly wittle down opponents with tons of F9 F5 spam because mobs 1 shot me. thats also what annoyed me so much about magic in skyrim, there is just so much running around in fights waiting for mana -_-. Maybe ill do it anyway.
The thing is, i am admittedly super picky about playstyles, if magic sucks or is not fun to play in a game, i will stop playing the game. In general i really dislike melee and to an extend archery^^.

kotor is the recently released MMORPG right? i think a friend of mine plays that hardcore and it sounds good, but there is one problem: Im super competetive, and if i play an online game with pvp, i get super ambitious about it and put too much time into it :\. otherwise i would probably play some darkfall again and see how it is these days.
I'd recommend Dark Messiah of Might and Magic, one of my favourite RPGs! I really like the combat in it, the story isn't too too great but the melee combat is awesome.
I am playing through Final Fantasy 9 again :D Basically awesome. I probably beat that game like 3 times a year or so. I am sure you meant computer games tho ;P But you can always go the route of a playstation emulator!
Dragon age Origins was very good tho, i would go with that if you haven't played it before... Or FF9 ^^

I never actually played a full mage character, so I don't know how viable it is. I played a mage/sword guy, and my big thing was getting lots of restoration and conjuration to try to make myself better in combat. It worked reasonably well, but that wasn't on the hardest setting.
I think as a mage you'd probably want to get some serious enchanting to get solid mage gear going (disenchant a spare hood or something and make yourself some armor that also gives +magic) and use a summoned creature or ally in addition to going in alone, and buffing it with "healing hands" and basically have it tank for you. I think this sort of setup is the strongest for a mage-- it's what I did as a mage/sword guy.
Another restriction for the pure melee dude-- no followers.

Gothic 2 Night of the Raven was one of my greatest gaming experiences ever. Huge world, great dialogs, dangerous wildlife. It's old though, so the graphics and controls are a bit antiquated. Risen is a nice unofficial sequel.

any of the tales series, any of the dragon quest series, any of the FF series, any of the star ocean series, that should keep you busy for a year or two!!

dragon quest vi snes/ds dragon quest ix ds
final fantasy tactics psx/psp final fantasy 6 snes/psx/gba final fantasy 7 psx final fantasy 8 psx

I really liked Risen, the controls are good, you can basically do whatever you want and the graphics are acceptable. Also it doesnt cost that much anymore! GO check it out!

You basically start out as a nobody with no knowledge of magic, and it takes quite some questing before they let you enter the firemages' monastery. So yes, it's complicated at first. Mage builds are viable though.
Well NWN2 is fun you'd porbably like the hellfire warlock class, literally a glass cannon, you sacrifice your constitution in order to gain huge damage. NWN1 is a better game for people who played multiplayer though.
hmm. DA:O is boring as a mage though.
i'd say get NWN2 platinum on steam and playthrough with hellfire warlock in mind. three campaigns two of them link, so you'd play 1 character through 2 of them and have to start a new one for SoZ.
though i'd reccomend the Higher Ground server in NWN1 for a multiplayer experience, it's fantastic, pretty much they've added 40 new lvls (you lvl up to 80), tons of new classes/races, spells ect. very hard dungeons to work with groups with, but it's kind of a big timesink, randomized items rare drops and the way you get to end game content make it hard. lvl 1-40, become an immortal, level 41-60 become a demigod by killing the lords of the nine hells, 61-80, defeat the gods themselves.
Come play Diablo 2! There's a private server for redditors that I play on, full of nice and helpful people and without many of the negatives (botting, spammers) on Bnet. Maphack and multiboxing is allowed, and there's no need for a legit cd-key.
Your list is missing Planescape torment for some reason if you havent played one of the best black isle studio games you better fix that mistake favorite rpg game alongside BG2.
Why is DA:O boring as a mage? it takes me like 15 hours to download, so i'd rather get something else first if thats the case -__-. Even though i already bought it.
edit: I think i should actually not play anything that has multiplayer, otherwise its too hard for me not to view it as competition.
I'll second what everyone has been saying about Chronotrigger. That game is amazing. Even after all these years. I just got it on my phone (its in the iOS App store) and have been impressed with the port.
I also really like the Fire Emblem games if you're into consoles and emulators and stuff.
The new Zelda is pretty slick.
Now that I'm thinking about it, emulators of old console games is probably your best bet for great RPGs. The Lufia games for SNES. Golden Sun for Gameboy, 7th Saga for SNES.

i heard lufia was great too, golden sun was the most fantastic game when it first came out tooo, it had the most beautiful graphics.
If you enjoy JRPGs, I would try playing a classic like FF6. You can also try playing Deus Ex (the first one, can't really give an opinion on the second one).
Hey darkforce please just get Bastion, right now its only 5bucks on steam and will give you at least 10hours of fun game play. The game is so simple and yet you have a bunch of different game play options. Should try it out!!!!!

I don't know about that. Doesn't the GBA version have the new Dragon's Den and Soul Shrine? As well as post-game content?
Anw, yea.. FF6 has more depth than most people are aware, and is fun to play both casually and in-depth. Defnly worth the time, imho. (Btw, for casual play, Gao is good :3)
I ll second the dude who mentioned Chrono Trigger as well, great game. Less gameplay depth, but a more complex and colorful storyline compared to FF6, whatever fits your taste better, i guess.
btw you should just play DotA (2) to relax instead, I remember you were decent doter back in days on dotainvite (and maybe dp, not sure if you played there too), can't say the same about the other SC2 progamers who used to play DotA at those time too (not gonna name them).
Also to say on topic... yes Star Ocean 2 was sick game, obviously the same with Chrono Trigger / Secret of Mana, and especially Seiken Densetsu 3, but you probably played them
Did you play Icewind Dale 2, or just the original? If not, it should probably be the first pick based on your taste (cause it's the same as mine xD). It's the most polished, smooth and gameplay-oriented Infinity game, I played it twice as much as all of the others put together.
Other than that, Planescape Torment, Fallout 1 and 2 and Arcanum all have the similar feel.

I am not speaking in superlative when I say that Lufia 2 is my favorite video game of all time. The Ancient Cave is one of the most interesting challenges of any RPG I've ever played. Endless fun. Aeh, I wouldn't agree that it's boring... Because of tactical combat, you're constantly bouncing between your characters in order to win your fights. My first play through was with a ranged rogue, but I ended up using/controlling every one of my NPC's just as much, probably more so due to the fact that the mage is such a critical role in tactical decision making. I should also mention that there was a lot of pausing and careful positioning, and that mostly was due to the fact that I was playing on the hardest difficulty (which before the first patch was suuuper hard).
i just dled KOTOR but the game keeps crashing after the lucas art load screen..-_- edit: actually the game just minimizes and it locks up on my taskbar
edit2: might run into this problem if ur using win7, found the fix "This happened to me too. I'm using Windows 7 also, just got the game off of Steam 2 days ago. Anyways, you're going to have to navigate to your games directory (if you're using the steam version, Program Files > Steam > steamapps > common > swkotor) and then double click swconfig. There, check the box that says "disable videos".
Try running the game after that and it should work. Hope that helps."
If you want a newer game, definitely Xenoblade Chronicles - easily the best JPRG of this console generation, and among the best RPGs ever if you don't take the release date into account (i.e. in my opinion Chrono Trigger was the best game ever released for it's time, but I wouldn't necessarily recommend it as the best game to play now if you haven't played other newer ones).
The Mass Effect games and Dragon Age: Origins are all good as well, though a slightly different game experience than the traditional RPG.
Even despite what I said earlier, Chrono Trigger still remains an extremely good RPG. I'd add Lufia II and Super Mario RPG as another couple great games from that era.
Edit: Forgot about Golden Sun. As awesome as Lufia II was for it's day, I might have to recommend the Golden Sun series over it if you're looking for an RPG with puzzle elements.

Lufia 2, Rise of the Sinistrals was so difficult to me, I'm 19 and I wouldn't call myself stupid, but the puzzles in that game were so challenging. I really wish that I could find another RPG game that has such seriously hard puzzles.

dota 2 is competetive. not an option. also, dota got boring for me over the years.
except for secret of mana i havent even heard of the other games you mentioned. played none of them.
edit: while some puzzles in an RPG are ok for me, in general i will just load a wiki for the game on my second screen if it takes too long. so please no super puzzle heavy games ^^.
i want a mage, that does tons of damage and, in the best case, has nice aoe spells. i like if you have to use terrain etc. to your advantage to kill stuff. but i want to kill stuff. not sit there and solve puzzles :DD
Seiken Densetsu 3 is a suite of Secret of Mana, so if you liked Secret of mana, you'll love Seiken Densetsu 3, it's one of the best RPG there was on SNES with Chrono Trigger imo.

I agree with this Seiken Densetsu 3 was one of my favorite RPGs as a kid. It had a great storyline, solid gameplay, and baller music.
If by some vagary of fate you haven't played Chrono Trigger, I second the opinions of the others in this thread-- go for it :D
I played Bastion recently, it's a really original and good game, doesnt last very long, but it's cheap (5€ on steam with the christmas sale). It's a isometric 2D hack'n'Slash rpg. Graphics are really nice, and the narrator commenting has a badass voice.
Really enjoyed it a lot, and I tend to dislike solo games.
Alternatively, if you want a serious action/RPG/adventure game, do this without a guide: http://sc2.sourceforge.net/downloads.php ^^ this is what real gamers played with back in the day. You actually gotta write down stuff but your brain will love the story.

I tried to get this game working for like a week before giving up. Mine crashes on the pic of the ebon hawk (I'm in win7) and none of the fixes work. This is the best single player rpg I've played and would reccomend it to anyone.
Planescape Torment is probably the most immersive RPG i have ever played, absolutely underrated and brillant storytelling. I played it a few years ago and it was an experience i will never forget.
The Fallout series is pretty baller, specially the first 2 games and the ones made by Bethesda (FO 3 and New Vegas). Fallout 1 and 2 are really hardcore turn-based RPGs.
If you own a PSX (or, erm, a PSX emulator..) I'd suggest Final Fantasy Tactics, Vagrant Story, Suikoden or Xenogears.
The recent EA RPGs are pretty meh if compared to the standards of yore (such as Baldur's Gate or Neverwinter Nights) - Dragon Age: Origins, for instance, felt so... bland.
Dark Souls! I know it's probably the opposite of relaxing, but it is a really fun rpg and shouldn't be boring to play. Downside is, if you don't have a 360 or a ps3, you can't play it :/
On January 04 2012 06:51 kusto wrote: Planescape Torment is probably the most immersive RPG i have ever played, absolutely underrated and brillant storytelling. I played it a few years ago and it was an experience i will never forget.
This !
I just replayed it again just a week ago . Best RPG for sure.
If you don't mind outdated graphics and midi music, just get a SNES/DS emulator and rock FF4, FF6, Chrono Trigger, Tale of Phantasia...etc. Probably the cheapest way to run through a bunch of RPG classics.
The problem with RPGs these days is that they are too action-heavy. They are all becoming like Diablo 2 and I fear 3 where it's all about how fast you can click. And very repetitive dungeons etc...
The greatest experience I ever had with RPGs was when I played ULTIMA VII, VIII and IX a long long time ago when they were cutting edge. Main reason I believe was that I played these games at an age when video games still impressed me.
in general i think im not going to start bothering with console emulators, its too much hassle. i also really hate the control of console games, one time when i visited a friend and played with him on his xbox, the controller tilted me super hard. i guess it might be a bit better with the keyboard, but still >_<.

Yeah check out Dragon Age: Origins. Don't even think about the second one, it wasn't worth the money at all. Also check out Mass Effect 1, 2 and 3 is coming out soon, they are amazing games with a compelling story, good characters, and fun game play.
Also check out Fallout 3. It was kinda like Skyrim but apocalyptic and with guns. It was a lot of fun and I put a lot of time into it. I didn't like New Vegas much, it just lacked the atmosphere and feel of 3 in my opinion.

sorry, but i disagree. I found the game extremely easy on both a knight and a royalty play through, the difficulty comes from not farming (and stupid things like falling in holes). After I beat the first two stages (which too forever, and were the actual game i might add) the game got really boring and i beat it without dying soon after.
I dont even have a TV, and i have no space for a TV in my flat, so im definitely not going to buy any consoles. As said in my previous post, i really dislike consoles.

unfortunately your choices are then limited to emulators and bad western rpgs
I don't get it, you can connect a console to a computer monitor these days pretty easily as long as you have HDMI. Connect your speakers to the AUX connection on the monitor an viola!
I play NWN2 and it's a pretty fun game to play that's not too difficult. I loved my dual wielding 2H weapon ranger with some great cleave action.
DA:O mageplay is fairly boring because you have to make the decision (on non easy difficulties) between usefulness and fun.
yeah your buff/disable mage is the best possible party member, but sitting there autoattacking isn't what i want my mage to be doing the whole game.
all the good damage spells deal immense friendly fire, it's like you can pick between having a defiler/sentry combo or a siege tank that casts BW storms, but all your allies are SC2 zerglings.
That being said there is some fun to be had playing a very bad character in DA:O since it takes alot of skill, but honestly auto-attacking as a mage.
NWN2 Warlock you'd love, especially once you get hellfire $_$
Sir, i would recommend you Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura, here is a short trailer, try to google a little bit more about it, its an awesome RPG and i highly recommend it.
And there are so many ways to play your character, music is superb, a great RPG. I think you will really like it.
Get neverwinter nights 1 but don't play the original campaign (it's bad). Then go to nwvault.ign.com and look for the top rated community made mods. They're all top-notch, high production values, and some of the best stories I've ever had the pleasure of experiencing. I mean, I've played FF6 through FFX, Planescape Torment, Baldurs Gate, Kotor and such, but some of the community made neverwinter nights mods equal or surpass even those.
Anyway it's only like 5 bucks on the internet now so why not. Also if you do get neverwinter nights I personally recommend
Rose of eternity - ( Like a jrpg-western rpg hybrid, really heart-wrenching, best character interaction in any video game I've played and awesome music. Favorite game ever!)
Almraiven - (Wizard roleplaying game, no combat, puzzles, TONS of roleplaying oppurtunities, awesome music)
Those are just what I think are the best. There are many more awesome mods from different genres.
You can take a look at Drakensang since you're a German nerd and might have experienced the DSA universe. I havent played it but friends said it was decent.
Depending on how much effort you put in and how much tolerance you have for outdated graphics/interfaces, Morrowind can be too frustrating to play or the best RPG ever. If you do get into it, it'll last you several months.
Aside from that I can't even think of any other games that fit your criteria of fantasy only, no multiplayer, can play as a mage, and PC only. Maybe Jade Empire fits those but I'm assuming you want actually good games. If you can get over your dislike of sci-fi, then KOTOR and Mass Effect are some of the greatest experiences you can have on a PC.
Alternatively, if you want a serious action/RPG/adventure game, do this without a guide: http://sc2.sourceforge.net/downloads.php ^^ this is what real gamers played with back in the day. You actually gotta write down stuff but your brain will love the story.
I used to love Star Control, thanks for that link I'm going to go bury myself in nostalgia.

I don't think there was ever a translated version of FF4 was there? I know FF6 (aka Final Fantasy 3 in the US) was, and it is an incredible game, and pretty easy to find the ROMs. I've got a good 25 hours sunk into my current game and have a ways to go. Chrono Trigger is also on my ever growing "to play" list.
-edit: While we are talking about SNES RPGs, gotta mention Mario RPG. Cheesy and a bit wonky, but it was also made by Square Enix and just as much fun as and the the FF games they made.
I might have to pick of DA: Origins myself. I've seen good reviews of it and everyone here seems to love it... (just what I need, another game on my list )

No.
FFVI is far from "relaxing"; it's more like "frustrating". Because of its system, it is very easy to make a mistake with your character, since just leveling up is not the proper way to build an end-game character.
As far as FF goes, probably go with FFIV, FFV, FFVII, FFIX, or FFX where leveling up at least has no penalties.

Haha, thanks for the tip^^, i might actually try one of the final fantasies, never played any of them admittedly.
I really want a game where i can just shut down and relax, not something that is annoying, frustrating or requires tons of thinking etc.
Kotor great story and a really great bioware game. If you really liked Baldurs Gate 2, for me it is the best RPG ever, you could try the expansion: Baldur's Gate II: Throne of Bhaal At last i would recommend Neverwinter Nights 2 + the first expansion. Great Game and a lot better than the predecessor. The best thing about the game is the big amount of options you have for your character. And if you like playing a mage the spells are quite impressive.
FFVII has a computer version btw. so being without console/emulator it will works well, though the comp version is slightly inferior (random battles aren't random) but as long as you don't abuse the exploits in the comp version it's barely noticable especially on a first playthrough.
Based on suggestions in this thread and some really good online reviews, I just added DA: Origins Ultimate Edition to my Amazon order. Should get it in a few day!

I have to disagree with this, with the exception of Gau most of the characters have a pretty straight forward leveling system until about 2/3 of the way through the game. Even then a decent walk through with some advice as to which espers to equip on which characters makes this a non issue. I say if you have the time FF6/FF3 in the US is a must play game. Very fun, good story, and then you can finally understand why TheKefka has an awesome TL username
I saw Bastion mentioned beforehand but I don't anyone's given it the proper sell it deserves. It's a 3d isometric action RPG.
It follows the story of a world after the apocalypse (calamity) and the survivors attempts to put it back together. It looks absolutely gorgeous with an anime inspired art style and a world which builds itself as you move around. The music blends exotic sounds with more modern electronic beats and a couple of the main characters themes are truly incredible ("Build that wall").
I haven't even mentioned the best bit. Everything you do is narrated by one of the characters. I started off the game, and did what everyone does on being handed a giant hammer, i.e. try and smash everything. The narrator informs me "The kid just rages for awhile". It's a brilliant way of involving you in the game as well as conveying a sense of the world. It's not that long a game maybe only 6 to 10 hours but damn it's a fine couple hours.
If you want something more technical, probably not the game for the moment, the combat and upgrade system while fun and addictive are not particularly deep. But for a game to just sit back and soak up the atmosphere (while whaling on some Gasfellas) this takes some beating.
Bastion is one of the best action RPGs I have ever played. And despite people saying it's short, I really didn't find it all that short. If you take your time exploring everything and doing the weapon stages then you can get 20 or so hours out of it, you get your moneys worth. Not to mention it has new game+ you can replay it with all your shit from the last game.
If you need an RPG kick, Deus Ex never fails, or games like Morrowind, Fallout series, Baldurs Gate, etc.

6 is great fun the first time through! The level up system only presents a problem if you're a perfectionist. Monsters/bosses don't level up with you, and even lowlevel-coupled-with-other-handicap runs are quite doable in the game. Once I understood magicite, it was just like "Oh." and I continued through. Can always level up more if want chars stronger
And actually 9 had level up stat gains too, based on stat-boosting equipment being used. Like if you wore some str+3 thing for several levels, you'd get str+1 to base stats. Didn't affect gameplay much for me though ;p
aiden chronicles. its for n64 and the graphics are not that bad really. its a sick story but more importantly the game is actually good. its turn based movement rpg where you fight a single mob that opens onto a battlefield where you take turns moving and attacking within the designated area. its so so fun and the storyline is great as well as the world being VERY large containing many hidden gems of gameplay/items
i am most fond of this game above all other rpg
if you end up getting it get mario rpg legend of the 7 stars. amazing game man its also a sick mario style story that fits in super nicely with everything and its also long enough to be an rpg game. some levels are very very long
KotOR 1 is amazing... if you haven't played it yet, you should definitely give it a try. The second one is somewhat better graphically, but story-wise there's really no contest.
